    Westin Maui, Beware! Bait and Switch – Old, Filthy Hotel with Rude Management

    I never write reviews, but have to warn others. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in over 1,300 hotel nights. This was my first family vacation after being diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. I was thrilled to be able to travel with my children at least one more time, and let the hotel know ahead of time I splurged on this vacation and chose the Westin because it looked like it had a fun pool area and nice rooms. The website shows a luxurious hotel and charges as much at the Ritz Carlton. Beware! The Westin is a mix between an old budget motel from the late 1970s and a notorious discount store. This hotel was so bad and disappointing my son said, "Mom, why do bad things always happen to us?" The website showcases the newer Hokupa’a Tower. As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member, I used Suite Night Awards to upgrade to a suite. The desk clerk confirmed there were many rooms and suites available, and there was a lounge, but demanded $300 to $500 a night to “upgrade.” Nowhere on the Westin Maui and the Marriott Bonvoy Elite benefits website does it say upgrades to the Hokupa’a Tower are not available. When I tried to ask the manager about the upgrade policy, she spoke over me and interrupted me constantly while the poor desk clerk looked visibly embarrassed. The manager said the policy was “proprietary information,” and would not provide it to me so I could address it with Marriott. I was “upgraded” in the Ocean Tower to an accessible room (which I did not need or ask for) with my Suite Night Awards. I was confirmed in an ocean view suite with a king size bed and sofa bed. I was provided a room overlooking a rooftop with loud air conditioners, the luxurious Hokupa’a Tower, and the back of the mall with loud garbage trucks. We could not enjoy the balcony or even open our door because it was so loud. The bed was an Olympic Queen. The chair was too small for the desk. When I sat down, the desk was chest height and unusable. The sofa was grungy and torn, and the carpet was dirty and bunched up around the door area. There were smears on the door to the room and bathroom, mold and rust in the shower, visible grime on the light switches and furniture, peeling paint in the hall, and blood and dirt on the elevator floor. There was only space to store one piece of luggage, and the room was so small, the luggage crowded the small room. The closet had no space to hang dresses. There was a funky old stereo system, in the sitting area, but it did not work. One night I woke up around 4 am to a bright light shining directly in my eyes. I was startled and expected to see someone with a flashlight with my heart racing only to discover the bright hall light amplified through the low peephole directly into my eyes. I could not sleep on my side without the bright light shining directly in my eyes. Because the bed was small, I couldn't scoot down to avoid the light without my feet hanging over. I did not sleep comfortably even though I had traveled not long after my cancer treatment. The room was only tidied two out of five days. After seeing the condition of the room and the size of the bed, I called the manager. She refused to admit the bed was not king size (I used my iPad to measure it, it was an Olympic Queen at 66” wide). After a couple of calls, the manager said she would move me to a smaller room (not a suite) with two queens at the back of the Hokupa’a Tower which meant directly over the mall’s dumpsters and no ocean view. I declined because I was afraid it would be worse because she was hostile toward me. The eating areas at Mahele Market and Eatery were dirty with filthy tables and food stains on the ground. The breakfast provided to Bonvoy Titanium members was lower quality than you can get in a gas station, and the breakfast attendant didn’t even try to be pleasant. The food options were largely reheated frozen food. We ordered the breakfast pizza which strangely had lettuce cooked on it. The breakfast option at Hale Mo’olelo only covered a tiny piece of hummus toast and no beverage. The special breakfast potatoes were inedible as they were burnt several days in a row and drenched in salt each time (I really wanted to like them). The servers confirmed they regularly had very unhappy guests. The benches at Hale Mo’olelo were peeling and were missing the bottom cushion. The back cushion was dirty and shabby. The chairs were falling apart. The pool and lounge area was also fairly dirty to the extent I did not want to get in the pool because I could see an oily, dirty film on the water. It was hard to find three chairs close to each other. Parents were getting day-drunk from alcohol hidden in their diaper bags while their children were wild, without supervision. I love children and expect them to play and be boisterous in a pool, but this was more like kids amped on Red Bull and candy after staying up all night watching Jackass. Many children stopped in the middle of the slide to prevent other children (and adults!) from going down. Hotel staff didn’t seem to notice or care. The kids area was closed after someone vomited in the pool (was it a kid? An adult?), and it was attached to the other pool which was left open. My son enjoyed the birds, and the concierge recommended a fabulous restaurant off-property. That was the highlight of this trip on our last night as we celebrated leaving the hotel. This was the worst vacation I ever had, and especially disappointing since I hadn't been able to travel because of my cancer treatments. I have tried to resolve all of the issues with the hotel when I was at the hotel, by email afterwards, and through Marriott Bonvoy, and have absolutely no resolution. Honestly, for this amount of money, stay at the Ritz. The Ritz is absolutely worth it. The rooms are clean and nice, the pools and grounds are fabulous, and the staff are kind and helpful.

    Beware of United Vacations by Priceline

    I booked the Luxury Queen Room with ocean views in the Hokupa‘a Tower through United Vacations by Priceline. I get to the room and it was a basic room with views of the golf course & roof of the parking garage. I immediately went back down to the front desk & the employee/manager on duty insisted it was an issue with United Vacations & not the hotel. They also insisted that was the room I booked even though I showed them screenshots of my reservation. They acted like I was trying to upgrade to a room I didn’t pay for & they were not very pleasant to me. I told them bluntly you are acting like I’m trying to get something I didn’t pay for when I did pay for this upgraded room & the screenshots prove this. I gave up with the front desk & called UV by Priceline & spent over 2 hours on phone with them only to be told by their reps ‘Ma’am just because the photo shows that view doesn’t mean you will be booked in that room’. I am not that naive & have booked many trips to understand how the reservation process works with or without photos! The joke was when they offered me a 15% discount on a hotel booking for a stay of 3 or more nights with travel to be completed by May 14 of this year through hotels.com. Very shady of United Vacations by Priceline. Nothing was resolved at check in. Later that evening I stopped at the front desk to ask about shuttle service & lucky for me there was a couple checking in who had the same issue I did. They also booked through the same company. This time Cameron & Dawn were the managers at the front desk. They were amazing & the only ones willing to listen to have my issue resolved! Cameron went above & beyond expectations by contacting United Vacations by Priceline within a couple of hours. He emailed me at 11 pm confirming that I did purchase the upgraded room. The next morning Dawn was finally able to check me into the room I booked. My advice is to take screenshots of your booking because when United Vacations by Priceline emails the confirmation info all the room details are not included in that email. Thank you Cameron & Dawn for all your help. Upon reading other reviews it seems that I was not the only guest who encountered issues with some of the front desk staff. Cameron & Dawn are the reason I will definitely be staying at the Westin again!

    Exceeded Expectations

    It’s been a while since I have rewritten a review but I feel like it is important to rave about this resort. My husband suggested this resort and when I read some previous reviews I was hesitant, but we went for it anyways. It exceeded our expectations! We had an ocean view room in the ocean tower, the room looked like it was recently renovated and was very clean. I love a Westin heavenly bed and it did not disappoint, we slept so good. We were located right above the waterfall, which on the balcony was a little loud but also kind of relaxing, and when the sliding glass door was closed we did not notice it, The staff was attentive and friendly. We ate mostly at Whaler village next door but did have breakfast everyday at the hotel, the portion size was good, the food was average. Prompt towel service, and the pools were not overly busy. While I prefer a lazy river pool, having many different pools options was nice and there were plenty of umbrellas and chairs to go around. I would definitely stay here again!

    Our Photo Shoot Was So Fun!

    We were offered a photo shoot with a credit for ordering photos, so we decided to take advantage of the offer. Melanni, with Blink Photography was our photographer and she was so fun to work with! She took photos of us around the beautiful grounds, finishing on the beach at sunset. We love our photos and the beautiful video that she put together for us!

    Very disappointing….

    The setting is spectacular, I mean it’s Maui, right? Unfortunately the Westin did not live up to our expectations as a “high end” resort. Housekeeping is practically non existent with little to no attention to detail. There was a used inhaler and various other “surprises” under one of the beds…didn’t check the other one. We were there 4 days and even after asking did not have fresh linens. The pool is lovely but don’t expect to be able to get water from the coolers as they seem to just be for show. Potential is there but we won’t be going back…very disappointing. Finally, there are several surprise charges that will appear on your bill when you check out, and it’s not a good surprise.
