Great location, but tainted by some big issues.

We’ve stayed in Grace Bay several times but this was our first time with children and first time at the Sands. The positives are the hotel is in perhaps one of the best locations in terms of beach size and proximity to town. Close to downtown but not crowded on either side by other resorts. I found the front desk staff to be lovely on arrival, and throughout our stay. The accommodations are a great size for the price, compared to other resorts, but as with everything you get what you pay for. The rooms are very bright as other travelers mentioned, so if you have a child on the sofa bed, they’ll be waking up early. We tried to upgrade to a 2 bedroom because of this but unfortunately we’re unable, not surprisingly, it’s a busy time for resorts. The front desk was very kind about trying to upgrade, but we completely understood that it simply wasn’t possible. The room also had a leaky dishwasher, something leaking from the utility closet and the sofa bed broke a couple of nights before our departure, but a cot was provided. Once again the rooms but do have issues. The cleaning was fine it was done in a timely manner, but as other reviews stated our floors were not cleaned the entire stay. I’m pretty easy going about housekeeping on vacation but would of really appreciated just a Mid stay cleaning of the floor. Last and finally the biggest issue for us. The resort allows people to walk up from the beach and use the facilities. I don’t mean use the restaurant and bar as expected. I mean beach loungers. We saw it more than once and one of the visitors asked if she could use the loungers even if she wasn’t staying there and was told yes. That’s a big deal on a very popular beach during peak season, every bed was full when this happened. And let’s be honest who wants to pay thousands to stay at a resort if anyone can use the facilities. One day a drunken guy with a guitar and zero musical skills plopped down on a bed with his dirty bathroom towel. Once again the beach was full. When after a few hours of listening to him I reported it to staff, just so they could ask him to stop playing, they did nothing. I then politely asked him to stop singing, not even to leave just be quiet. He was loud and verbally abusive. I reported to 2 more staff on the beach, still nothing. Everyone around us HATED it. The main problems is there’s a safety issue here. This guy by his own admittance was not staying here, was drunk and using the facilities. We later saw him wondering throughout the resort. I understand people come and go on this beach and I love walking the beach and having a cocktail at other hotels but staff at other places are very aware of the guests and there comfort. The beach staff here isn’t and for that reason I would probably never stay here again, it’s just too big of a safety issue for me.

    Updates and maintenance needed desperately

While the outside is nicely maintained and the beach is lovely, the rooms need some serious updating and maintenance. Bathrooms are old, small and chipping, moldings are scuffed chipped and painting needed throughout. We rented 2 separate rooms, the first had an issue with the toilet that took at least 4 attempts to repair, finally determining there were hypodermic needles caught in the pipe. Even after this, the toilet continues to run day and night, on an island that asks to conserve water, because the flapper is shot and they have no sparred on the property to replace, so we wait….. Second room has had an issue with the thermostat since we arrived. They changed the battery and said it was fixed. It is not. The AC does not turn on automatically all night long unless you get up and hit the decrease arrow which only turns or on for 10 minutes and the cycle repeats all night long. Room is stuffy and uncomfortable and we have no idea what the temp is or what it’s set on since thermostat is not working. I have been waiting since 10:00 for maintenance to show 3 phone calls and a face to face discussion with maintenance and still no show 7 hours later. Staff has been great, friendly and accommodating. Can’t recommend staying here due to antiquated rooms and response times to cited issues

    Bait and switch

First off this was our second visit to the Sands, we transferred our time share there three years ago so we were familiar. On this visit we were greeted on arrival by reception who was unable to find our reservation. After an hour we were assigned a room. We were not happy with the room to say the least. The room was made up of 2 small bedrooms both with outside doors and a door in between each bedroom. It resembled workers quarters rather than the description of the room we had reserved. No screened balcony, no views. Too small for our family of three. We immediately returned to reception to voice our discontent. They responded by asking us go to in our small room and wait for a call from them. Just what we wanted to do upon our arrival to paradise. After 2 hours and 3 more visits to reception we finally got a response and were offered a room that more resembled what we reserved. We were told there would be an additional $220.00 charge per day for this room. The room that we reserved. At this point we decided to take the room and fight the additional charge afterward. It was either that or not enjoy our vacation in the " workers quarters".

    A great family vacation

Very nice stay. The condominium/hotel-like property was clean, the common areas were maintained, and the staff were excellent. Plenty of staff at the beach even on their busiest holiday week. Hemingways was terrific. And the front desk staff and managers went above and beyond. Meshell helped us numerous times during our stay, and Barbara was always around with her warm smile. A great place for families. A short walk or bike ride (on their complimentary bikes) to stores and restaurants. Kayaks and hobiecats included is a welcomed touch. The only thing that needs a little work in the condo we were in was the water pressure in the shower. A minor thing, and it didn’t detract much from an overall awesome vacation.

    Fabulous Holiday at the Sands

Our family of 4 just got back from a fabulous week at The Sands. It was our first trip to Turks and Caicos and we loved it! The resort was exactly what we were looking for — spacious clean rooms and an excellent location on the spectacular beach. We loved the fact that we could walk to the local supermarket and restaurants. Mishell in the front lobby was amazing — super friendly, helpful and very professional. We look forward to seeing Mishell and the other staff in December 2023!
