A great place for relaxing, beach walks and good food
We had an unexpected short window of time to get away from the cold and chose this resort because of a good package we could get through the airline. And we were delighted with the choice! The room (a "Junior Suite") was large and efficiently laid out. The minibar included way more alcohol than we would use but we appreciated it being well- stocked with bottled water! Every staff member was friendly and helpful. We ate entirely at the buffet, partly because of preferring the outdoor seating. But it includes separate Mexican, Asian and Italian sections as well as plenty of seafood so we didn't feel we were missing out on too much. The inaccuracy of labels can be a problem for those with serious allergies. I enjoyed the variety of foods, the small servings of the desserts and the availability of (good) ice cream for every lunch and supper. I was pleased that there were always plenty of loungers available on the beach. It did seem that the ones by the pools filled up quickly but there was less competition on the beach. Our only negative was the noise level of the evening entertainment. Even one afternoon a band set up by one of the pools and forced me indoors due to the volume. It wasn't the type of music but the fact that the noise was so loud I could FEEL it and it only took a few minutes to give me a throbbing headache. We got used to moving to our room (fortunately large and comfortable) and watching movies or reading after supper. And the shows DID end by 11 PM every night which may be a reasonable compromise. One thing I missed was wildlife. There were NO iguanas and very few birds (a couple sparrows and lots of grackles). Having vacationed in the area for years, I know they are around - another AI even has an "iguana feeding site" where it is great fun to go watch both the birds and the iguanas taking advantage of it. But Riu Vallarta seems to have gone to some lengths to eliminate all local fauna. (I might mention that they wanted to spray our room with insecticide, though they agreed to skip our room until we left since we are sensitive to those toxins!) So yes, there were some issues, but overall, we enjoyed it very much and have only praise for the staff!
Great resort let down by bad management
Let me just start by saying that if you are visiting this hotel as a group, meat eater or not expecting to take full advantage of the all inclusive facilities then this should absolutely be a 5 star experience for you! I have previously stayed at the neighbouring resort Riu Palace Pacifico and always had an amazing experience. However, as we had stayed there 3 times already we decided to book the Riu Vallarta. They are both considered 5 star resorts and having already visited this hotel previously for drinks I knew that the facilities were comparable. Sadly, my experience has not been comparable. The Riu Vallarta is a big resort and the staff that work here are so friendly and hard working but there just doesn’t seem to be enough of them in the bar areas for the amount of guests. We stayed here for a week and the queue at the pool bar was constantly at least 15minutes! The swim up bar was no quicker and they don’t have anyone coming around the pool taking drinks orders (the Riu Palace Pacifico does). I raised this feedback on my 2nd day in person and via email. I also mentioned that as a vegetarian, there is limited food options available. I understand that we are in a minority and if you eat meat or fish you will be absolutely spoiled for choice and variations every day. We however have survived off plain rice, boiled vegetables and plain pasta which again is fine (not great but you get used to it as a veggie) what isn’t fine is that the first couple of days none of the food was correctly labelled so we ended up accidentally eating meat! So in my feedback I mentioned the issue with the bar and the restaurant labels and I had an email back which apologised for the labels (it did improve slightly for the rest of our stay - still wasn’t 100%) but they completely ignored the feedback about the pool service. Camille from the resort called our room and informed me that they were looking into our feedback and later that day sent a bottle of wine to our room. The following day she called our room again to see if everything was okay (still no acknowledgment about the bar) and sent a cheeseboard to our room with an apology from the restaurant but the board had meat on it so clearly they didn’t read my email properly or genuinely care for my feedback! During this call I enquired about arranging a late checkout. She advised that they couldn’t confirm if this is possible until midday the day before because they don’t know how many guests are checking in. Personally I find this incredibly hard to believe. How can a resort of this size have no idea until the day before checkout how many guests are checking in?! She did however extend our checkout by one hour. The day before our departure, we went to the reception to enquire about a late checkout and was told this wasn’t possible but we could extend it by a further 1 hour for 340 pesos. We have still had no acknowledgment of the poor service at the pool, the lack of food options and the strange checkout arrangements. I’m hindsight I wish we had booked elsewhere or at least with the Palace Pacifico again as this was not the 5 star experience we were expecting. Again, all of the staff here are incredibly hard working and are doing the best that they can do if you do stay here, tip them well! It’s a shame the general management of the resort is not on the same level and the general service at the reception desk is poor by comparison. This resort is not for us and we wouldn’t return but if you are a meat eater or in a large group you will have a great time!
Very nice resort. Beach vendors are a little annoying. Food was mediocre. Excellent location and kept clean. Most staff were very helpful. Entertainment was just ok. Easy to find spots on the beach. Lots of drink options including non alcoholic. Was able to have the beer replaced in my room with non alcoholic beer.
Rooms were very modern and clean. Buffet and restaurants were very good. Excellent service throughout the resort. Very nice beach, but the water was very stirred up and not clear. Pools were very clean and great drinks at the pool bar. Sometimes a bit of a wait for drinks because it was busy. Bartenders were great and working as fast as they could. Nice snack bar near the pools for lunch. There were hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken and nacho’s with an assortment of toppings like onions, jalapeños, cheese sauce, mustard and ketchup.
Great job RIU
We stayed for 5 nights and had a great time. It was our first time staying there and first time not in a RIU palace. The difference is very small. I think we got a great deal and a great resort without paying for the palace which was just up the beach
