Enjoyable holiday
We have just got back from a two week stay at the Riu Playacar that we thoroughly enjoyed. The room itself is a good size, nicely decorated and well equipped. We had two double beds in our room so plenty of space to sleep. You get a decent sized wardrobe with a safe in it which is free to use. You just pop your items inside and set your own code! Couldn’t be easier. We thought it was bizarre on arrival we had an umbrella in the room but found out on our last night as to why! Came in handy walking to dinner in the pouring rain. Thankfully, this was the only time it was needed. There is also a minibar and optics in the room. The minibar is stocked every two days. In terms of food, you are spoilt for choice. The main restaurant offers a huge buffet so there is always something that you will like. And there’s a chocolate fountain every day! We tried all the speciality restaurants during our stay. Our favourite was the steakhouse. For starters you get a Caesar salad each and some mozzarella dippers to share. For main they offer a 12oz steak cooked fresh (they do have other options) to your liking and it was delicious. The Italian was the next best speciality restaurant. The beef filet in a Gorgonzola sauce they serve is wonderful. I enjoyed the Asian restaurant as well but my partner didn’t so we only went here once. The Mexican was nice enough but the food is toned down. Flavour but no real kick spice wise. There is a choice of three pools. We didn’t use the swim up bar as it was always rammed. We were happy to sit round one of the other pools that have us a bit more peace. The hotel does have staff coming round the pools offering a waiter service for drinks which was nice. The beach is a beautiful sandy beach. We went a few times but didn’t stay due to there being little stage. The once we went the seaweed was pretty bad (but the hotel can’t help this) and the other two times there wasn’t much. We had some photos taken by one of the hotel photographers called Marco. He was lovely and you are able to buy the photos later on in reception. They are little steep at $15 per photo but the quality of the pictures is excellent. In terms of entertainment, there is always something going on. There’s a range of activities throughout the day. There’s the usual water volleyball, aqua aerobics, table tennis etc but on certain days there are other things. We had both a pool party and a beach party during our stay. The entertainment team work really hard and are really engaging. They leave you alone when you politely decline their offers to join in. The evening entertainment was hit and miss. But I guess it’s just down to personal taste. The best part about our stay was the staff. Every member of staff we came across were wonderful. They work really hard and always have a smile on their faces. They are are credit to RIU. There were a few silly things that stopped this being a five star review. Firstly, the air con in the rooms is poor. Ours wouldn’t drop below 23C and most the times sat around 24C despite being set to 18C. This was fine when coming out of the 32C heat in the day but at night when it was cooler outside, it made the room feel warm. We did log this with reception who sent someone out to look but we were told there was no issue. Secondly, the beach. It’s wonderful down there and we’d have loved to have spent more time down there but there is little shade until the afternoon. There’s only palm trees to provide cover. Other hotels on the beach have parasols and other fixtures to provide shade so maybe it’s something RIU could look into. Around the pools there again is a lack of parasols and the pools themselves aren’t particularly cold. Finally, the last negative was the time taken to get your room cleaned. We would often be out of our room by 9am and it most hotels the room is done pretty quickly. But a lot of the time, when we popped back after lunch around 1-2pm the room hadn’t been touched. The maids do a really good job when they do the room, it just takes a while for them to get to you.

Mexico bliss
The best one yet. Approximately 90 minutes from cancun airport, it is well worth the journey. Rooms are spacious with balcony. His and hers sinks, power shower to die for , 4 optics in room (tequila, vodka brandy , bacardi) fridge restocked every day with beer and soft drinks. Food is absolutely brilliant in any of the restaurants, lobby bar is open 24hrs ,beach bar is brilliant. Would like to thank all the staff for a brilliant holiday. It was our anniversary and they brought us cake and champagne) special mentions to Dani,Alex, Marco and Troy. Thank you for a memorable holiday
