2nd trip to Tropical Bay, Not the Last
Returned Jan 12-22 after visiting in early 2019. This trip did not disappoint. I will list the negatives and get them out of the way. Beds are a little too firm...several people were achy, no one said they were great. Had a couple issues of towels in room and toilet paper not restocked. Room safes are a little old. Buttons are sticky when entering passwords, and we had to remove the batteries and clean the contacts to make it work. Thats all I got for negatives. Service is awesome. Never got better beach service anywhere then we got from Trevicer. Powell and Damian in the buffet were also top notch. Actually, every employee we ran into was polite and accomodating. They must look after their people. Food was quite good. Only did the italian a la carte, other 9 days were buffet and never got bored or went without. Room service, with the limited menu is a handy and quick way to eat when you get lazy. Rooms are clean and adequate Grounds and pools are kept in excellent shape. I really have no beefs whatsoever. We paid a lot a money for 10 days of beach and sun. I consider everything else at a resort as life support for the beach, and Riu Palace does it well. All the side items...check in/out, entertainment, wifi, bars etc etc work as they should. Done couples ocho and sandals whitehouse in jamaica before, and Riu outshines both. Highly recommend.
Not the greatest
Hotel RIU Palace Tropical Bay Overall impression….2 out of 5 stars for a 10 day, 9 night trip (12/23/22 – 01/01/23). Here is my breakdown Booking – Very easy, but very misleading. There is no real Ocean View or Ocean Front. Sure, you can see the ocean, but it is through the palm trees or around the corner of your deck. Save your money and just get a Garden View (which is what most of the rooms are). Also, don’t think you’re getting the bed selection you want. They don’t go off that. Their words exactly. We had 2 adults and one 16 year old and they gave us a King bedroom for all 3 (after we booked 2 double beds…which looked more like single beds). They go by the room type (ocean vs. garden) rather than the bed type or how many people you will have in 1 room. Overall: 2 out of 5 stars. Staff – Front desk was horrible. Waiters and Waitresses were good. Entertainment staff was fun. Overall 3 out of 5 stars. Food – Buffet was what you would expect. Nothing overly fancy. Breakfast was the best I would say. Jerk Chicken Hut was a must for lunch. Restaurants were ok, but the way to get into them was absolutely stupid. 1st come; 1st serve. No reservations, no guarantee you would get into one of the restaurants if you were not willing to stand in line an hour (at least) before they opened. Steak place was good, Italian place was good. Never ventured to the other restaurants. Overall 3 out of 5 stars. Entertainment – Oof, well, this is going to be fun. First off, they had nothing for entertainment from 5p-8p. Sure it is dinner time, but nothing, not even music playing. Once the entertainment started it was a horrible house band….every night. The main entertainment (which was from 9p-10p) was good however. The “DJ” started at 10p every night and promptly made everyone scatter to their rooms. Couldn’t keep a crowd and played really old music or stuff that people did not know which made sticking around boring. NYE was worse. No entertainment until 8:30 (crappy house band), then at 9:30p they did some stuff that looked like they copied from Glee, High School Musical or Pitch Perfect (it was fun, just not original). They just seemed not to know what to do to make something happen all day/night long. After 10p on most nights there was nothing. Overall 3 out of 5 stars. Bars – No real issue with the bars as drinks were good….except that after 6pm they had 1 bar, 3 bartenders for the whole resort. There were no other bars open. It seemed that they were not trying to allow people to drink their all-inclusive free drinks (or at least get their monies worth). 3 out of 5 stars. Beach – This was by far the best part of the whole resort. While there were some people trying to sell you stuff on the beach, not nearly as much as you would see in other places. Beaches were clean, no garbage, shells, down leaf’s, etc. on the beach. Water was clear and not deeper than 6 feet for the swimming area. Overall 5 out of 5 stars. Overall – If you come here, expect a great beach day then an early bedtime every night. If that is what you are looking for, great. If you want entertainment into the night, then this is probably not for you. Try to get this as in-expensive as possible and expect a fight when you get your room as it most likely not what you were expecting. Would I recommend this place, it depends on what you are looking for in a vacation. Partying, no. Relax on the beach and in bed by 10p, sure…just not for the money we paid (over $10k for 3 people).
Manager Claudia Erdozain
Visited hotel with friends. Assistant manager Claudia Erdozain was chasing men in group and making inappropriate comments and providing personal contact info. Hotel feels like escort service. Room was unkempt, food not fresh, poor service all along. Will follow with formal complaint.
60th birthday celebration
We recently visited the resort as a treat for the family on our 60th birthdays The reception desk knew we were visiting for a special occasion and placed us all in sea view rooms which was really appreciated We had been to this hotel 12 years ago and since then it has undergone a modern refurbishment and is a great improvement Good points Fantastic clean beach with great sunsets Comfortable modern rooms Reception staff very helpful Entertainment was good lots of sports and games organised if you want to join in Separate pool to the pool with the swim up bar as this can get crowded Good selection at buffet Jerk chicken at lunchtime is the best Speciality restaurants were good The bar by the reception was excellent Points that could be improved Queuing up and booking for the second sitting at speciality restaurant’s wasn’t always easy especially as we were a party of 5 Tip Pick your times for the transfer from Montego Bay airport rush hour adds a good hour and a half to your journey not the best after a 10 hour flight If you fancy a meal outside the resort book a taxi to Ivan’s restaurant it’s excellent Overall this is an great hotel especially if your travelling with family or Friend’s and we will be back again
Fun experience - but expected a bit more for the money.
Overall a fun experience and we had a good time - its Jamaica! Pros Rooms were on the beach - quite spacious and nice (we took the premium ocean facing rooms - views were limited due to the trees on the 2nd floor but decent. Buffet was decent - reasonable variety. the Jerk chicken at the Hut was the best. Decent entertainment most evening. Michael Jackson imitation was quite enjoyable. The coffee shops and bars were nice. Cons disappointed with the fruit and vegetable selections -its jamaica! Services was average at best - the staff mostly looked spent/tired. The resort credits were a sham - small coupons and mostly useless. Not the best Riu property - visited other Riu properties in Jamaica and other islands which were all much better. no elevator - we had 2nd and 3rd floor rooms. Getting reservations to the restaurants wasn't easy.
