Very disappointing experience for a RIU hotel
My experience at this hotel was unfortunately very disappointing. I traveled with my family expecting the level of quality that RIU hotels usually provide, but this stay was far below those expectations. One of the main issues was the room arrangement. I paid the same rate for my son as for the adults, yet he had to sleep on a sofa instead of having a proper bed. Considering the price paid, this situation does not seem fair or appropriate. Another major disappointment was the quality of the food at the buffet. The variety and overall quality were far from what one would expect from a hotel that advertises itself as a high-level all-inclusive resort. The shows at the outdoor amphitheater are actually entertaining. However, the drink service during the shows is extremely slow. It often takes a very long time to receive drinks, and on several occasions the staff simply forgot the order, forcing us to ask multiple times. Last year I stayed at RIU hotels twice and had very good experiences, which is why I chose this brand again. Unfortunately, this stay has been extremely disappointing compared to those previous visits. I hope the hotel management reviews these issues and takes the necessary steps to improve the experience for future guests. I also have photos and videos documenting some of these problems.

Fantastic Family Holiday
We recently returned from a fantastic 10-day stay at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya in Mexico and overall had a wonderful holiday. The hotel itself is excellent, very clean throughout, with comfortable rooms and thoughtful touches such as a well-stocked minibar and coffee-making facilities. Housekeeping did a great job keeping everything spotless. The food was consistently excellent. The buffet offered a wide variety of options and we never had a bad meal during the entire stay. The speciality restaurants were also very good, with plenty of choice and menus that catered well for vegetarians and those who are gluten-free. What really stood out, however, was the staff. They work incredibly hard and were always attentive, friendly and welcoming. A special mention to Estaban, Nicodemo and Roberto, who really looked after us during our stay and helped make the experience even more enjoyable. The entertainment was also very good. There was something to watch every evening, and the daytime pool & surrounding area activities were fun to watch even if you didn’t participate. The Friday night White and Neon parties were particularly enjoyable and reminded me of my clubbing day! The only real downside was the lack of available sun loungers around the main pool areas. I often had to be up before 7am to secure four beds, and even then many had already been reserved. It seems the recent decision to convert the fourth pool into an Elite Club-only area may have contributed to this, as there always appeared to be plenty of loungers available there. That said, this was a relatively minor point in what was otherwise a superb holiday. We had an excellent stay and would not hesitate to recommend the hotel. We very much look forward to returning in the future and hopefully trying other Riu Palace hotels around the world as well.

Satisfying stay for a week.
One of the Riu properties in Playacar (I believe there are 5) it's the closest to Playa del Carmen, about 15 minutes walking distance. We loved it as we'd eat and go for a stroll on Xaman-ha boul and even seeing ruins on the way for free. As a Riu Palace it gives access to all other Riu properties and the place itself is rather simple (Personally the middle space could've been used for something else than just a some body of water). It's a U -shaped property with the opening facing the ocean. Food - There were 'ok' and some nights were so much better (one night they had Rib-eye steaks and they were as good as a very decent steak house and some nights we had to really look for 'food') at the Buffet. The Italian joint is really good though. Pool - nice but gets crowded fast and for some reason there is no breeze so under the parasols it gets hot real quick. The beach had a better breeze with the tall palm trees. Water - First few days a bit of sargassum but the last few days it was unswimmable, not the hotel's fault, I think the whole area of PDC was suffering from it Staff - top notch, friendly and quick. Also people (especially Europeans) please tip your staff and helpers, they work really hard and a bit of tip helps them alot. I get that in Europe tipping is still a bit of a foreign concept but on the American continent, we tip as their base salary is really low. Entertainment - famour Riu party, pool party, all fun (we are not party folks but much appreciated) as well as the singers and dancers. Noise - It really depends on the guests, some nights were quiet and some nights people were talking loudly till 2-3am. I learned my lesson and sleep with earplugs when I go on vacation. on little thing - lounge 24. It's a snackbar but my gripe is, I'm a coffee drinker and a few days during my stay the coffee machine was broken or under maintenance.... (Hello McDonald's icecream machine's cousin)

Amazing Resort!!
We just returned yesterday from our trip to the Riu Palace in Playa Del Carmen. Each Winter we go to a different all-inclusive as friends/couples and this year the pick was Mexico. I selected this resort based on all the aweseome reviews it had. There were three couples this time (we are in our early 50's for reference) and we all upgraded to "Elite" status and were in the building closest to the ocean. Check in was seamless and fast...they placed two couples next to each other on the 2nd floor and we were right above them on the third floor. The hotel, rooms, beach, restaurants and grounds were immaculate...the cleanest we've ever seen and we've been to ALOT of places!! The beach did have seaweed but the resort did an amazing job cleaning it up each day as you will notice the neighboring resorts do not do such a good job. This resort has the best beach by far as you walk up and down both ways. Our favorite restaurant was the Italian place, we ate there twice. We also ate twice at the Elite restaurant and had great meals both times as well (surf-n-turf)...however the last night my steak was chewy and hard to cut (grissely) but my girlfriend gave me 1/2 of hers so all was well. The buffet for breakfast was what you would expect, and we only ate their for dinner one night and it was ok. I would stick to the restaurants, however, we did not make it to a few of them due to not liking the cuisine they served at them. Pepe's snack bar was good enough for lunch but they also have a buffet close by as well. Overall, we all agree that the food was some of the best we've had out of any of the resorts we've been to! The drink service at the pool bars was top notch! We never had to wait, they kept them coming. Find the drink server named German....tip him good the first day and he will keep your cup filled the whole time you are there...he was the BEST!!!! Thank-you German for your outstanding service!!! Our rooms were kept spotless clean, always made up and restocked when we were out for the day. We had to order a few items to the room twice and it came very quickly. Cute towel animals were left for us every day! The ONLY things that we noticed that we would have liked to have had seen was that there was only one bathroom by the pool area...and it was over by the swim up bar kind of hidden away. There are two bigger pools in the middle with no signage that we saw of any bathroom in sight. Let's just say, you didn't see anyone getting out of the pool very often (use your imagination!)...ha! They had entertainment during the day in the pool area which was great, but when the entertainment wasn't going on, there was no music playing so it didn't give you that vibe of "let's have fun!" feeling. Luckily we brought our own and brought it down to liven things up a bit! The pools were very nice! If you do have Elite status...that is the BORING pool. Unless you like to be by yourself with peace and quiet, then it's for you! Overall, our group LOVED this resort!! Give it a try, I don't think you will regret it! :) Thanks RIU for an amazing week!!! Happy Traveling!!!

Very uneven experience. Unlikely to be back.
"Free" airport transfers are provided by "Destination Services". Riu should seriously reconsider their transportation partner. At the airport we were told that the wait time for a shuttle is up to 45 minutes, the ride is shared and the bus will make up to 3 stops on the way. But upgrade to a private ride costs only $40, said the guy. He pocketed our $40 (no receipt, no nothing) and our ride materialized within minutes. They have less leverage for the return transfers, since they are timed to the departure flights. We only had to wait 15 minutes for the return bus. It was small and crowded, with loud music blaring until I asked the driver to turn it off. No one met us at the resort. It's probably too much to expect them to have a concierge. Elite club check-in is at the same counter as the regular check-in, just marked with red carpet. The only benefits of Elite club seem to be better rooms and access to a less crowded pool. The club pool is not really quiet, since it's located next to the activity pool. We got exactly the room we asked for, in the best possible location. Housekeeping was excellent. Bedsheets were changed upon request (they have a special card for that). Quality of sleep is significantly degraded by 3 major factors: cheap squeaky mattress, noisy underpowered air conditioner, weak soundproofing. Room TV is outdated - no USB, no network connection. Impossible to stream there. The room shower is great. Good water pressure, modern adjustable showerheads, proper ventilation. Much better than in more expensive resorts we've been to lately. This must be the cleanest resort I've ever been to. Any time any place you go - there is always someone mopping the floor or cleaning a counter. Feels like borderline OCD. The air smells of chemicals all the time. The gym is small and underequipped. Set of dumbbells, few treadmills, ellipticals and strength machines. No towels on some days. The guy stocking the minibar graced us with his presence only twice in 10 days. Guess we needed to adjust our vacation activities around his schedule. Good thing there are 600 ml water bottles in 24 hrs lounge. Water bottles they stock in room fridges are 1.5 ltr - not a very convenient size. The resort uses towel cards. There was never a shortage of beach towels. The main buffet (Don Rafael) is great! Lots of variety, both in the morning and in the evening. Food quality can be unpredictable, but you'll never leave hungry. There is lunch buffet on a smaller scale in Italian restaurant (Il Portico). You can also order lunch a la carte there. Chicken Parmigiano and fettuccine Alfredo are highly recommended. They don't allow to take buffet food to the room. One day my wife was tired after a long walk and didn't want to go to lunch buffet, so I decided to bring her a plate of cold cuts from there. I was stopped by a waiter, who said it wasn't allowed because the food might get contaminated. We've been to more than a dozen Riviera Maya all-inclusives over the last 20 years and never had a problem taking buffet food to the room before. Riu app is pretty much useless. No chat, no way to ask questions. You can have everything done faster by calling front desk.
