    Awful

    Riu peninsula is keeping our money from a cancelation due to illness . We need a document for our travel insurance and the representative from India is demanding we give him $1000 for the needed documents. He was yelling and argumentative demanding more money from us when we are going through travel insurance. This is a total scam and he eventually hung up on us when we wouldn't give him $1000. When we initially tried to cancel with them, they said it was too late, yet now riu packages is demanding $1000 and refusing to give us needed documents for our travel insurance. I know riu reads these comments, please send us contact info immediately to fix this.

    Staff are Thieves

    I hate I have to give them even one star. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS. Housekeeping went through my daughter's personal stuff and stole her iPad. (It had all of her notes for college hence why it was so vital we got it back.) We proved it through the "Find My" app, but we didn't discover it until a few hours for leaving for the airport. Gustavo, the manager on duty at the time, took our information and promised the resort would make it right since we had to leave to come back home. And, again, had proof it was removed from the resort solely by someone on their staff since we hadn't been off resort and no one else had come in our room. Since then, the resort has yet to acknowledge the complaint, and what they did address, is not at all what happened. I've now had to pay to replace it and the resort is denying any involvement. DO. NOT. TAKE. THE. CHANCE.

    Mixed feelings

    First, let me say we're repeat Riu guests. We've come to expect a certain level of quality from Riu, especially from a Riu Palace. The staff, as always, was absolutely amazing - friendly, helpful, efficient, and hardworking. However, this hotel has a major upgrade starting in a month or so. It was very clear that there was no room in the budget for actual repairs beyond cleaning because of this pending update. Two elevators out of 6 were out of service, and one of the others had a malfunctioning weight limit alarm, so we often took the stairs from the 6th floor. Tiles were broken and missing everywhere, especially in the pools, and we saw numerous guests requesting bandaids for injured feet in the pool area. Art on the walls was zip-tied together. The steam room was luke warm, with controls hanging off the wall. Lots of cracked furniture cushions, chipped paint, and old towels were common. Our room's door wouldn't latch without significant effort. The food was truly disappointing. The buffets were absolute chaos, with no clear flow of traffic, which means people were constantly running into each other and dropping plates. Rice was often hard, dishes were cold and bland, meat was either overcooked or undercooked, and the main coffee shop didn't open until 10am. The burger & hot dog stand by the pool (instead of an amazing fresh taco stand, like some other Rius have) ensured we smelled like grease every day that we swam there. Custom-made food was pretty good, aside from occasional lack of seasoning. Entertainment staff was excellent, cleaning staff kept this aging resort spotless, check-in staff was very helpful and courteous, and wait staff was incredibly attentive. They saved our vacation. I sincerely hope Riu takes care of them during construction/shutdown, because they are the sole reason for this resort's success.

    Second time disappointed

    I will at sometime write a full review but for now this will do. We are at the minute staying at the Riu Palace Peninsula. We chose here as we had stayed before and it was an excellent hotel. How things have changed. The hotel is to close soon for refurbishments. The refurbishment isn't the issue. Everything has gone down hill. The food is mediocre at best. The choice in the restaurants is very limited and not very good. It has become a hotel for young drunk and very loud guests. At the minute we are sitting in the lobby and there is no escaping the noise. The Riu Party seems to go on forever. I like the craic and fun as much as the next person but there has to be an end to it. Guests playing their own music through portable speakers in the lobby bar in the early evening. Come on Riu management do something.

    Best bang for your buck in Cancun!

    I had an amazing stay at the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Cancún! From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. The staff was incredibly welcoming, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. Check-in was quick and smooth, and we immediately felt like valued guests. The resort itself is beautiful and very well maintained. Our room was spacious, spotless, and had a stunning ocean view that made waking up every morning feel like a dream. The beds were comfortable, and the room amenities made the stay even more enjoyable. The food exceeded expectations for an all-inclusive resort. There were multiple restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, and everything we tried was fresh and delicious. The buffet had plenty of options, and the specialty restaurants made each evening feel special. The pools and beach area were another highlight. The beach had soft white sand and clear turquoise water, and there were always plenty of loungers available. The pools were clean, relaxing, and perfect for enjoying the warm Cancún sunshine. Entertainment and activities were great as well—there was always something happening, from live shows in the evening to fun daytime activities around the pool. Overall, Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula delivered a fantastic vacation experience with great service, beautiful surroundings, excellent food, and a relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again! Footnote: I only had a few very minor gripes. A couple of times we needed more water and coffee. It took two calls to the front desk to get it delivered. The steak I had at the Japanese restaurant was extremely tough and chewy. The room service menu is very limited. The towel card system is kind of annoying but I understand why they do it. Only two out of three elevators working on our side of the building.
