Excellent Staff!!
The staff makes this resort stand out. Guadalupe, Reyna Rios, and Santos at the pooland lobby bar are amazing!! This was our first time staying in a non-Royal level room, and probably our last.. we really missed the royal level restaurant at lunch and dinner. The room was the same as royal level. We are booked two weeks in the Royal Level in June and cannot wait!

Amazing meal at the Olives inside Occidental.
Definitely one of my favorite meals during my visit. The wait staff was awesome and the food was delicious. Ask for a Kahlua coffee during your meal. It's a treat. Do not skip this place as it was definitely the best. A+++

Good diving resort
I consider myself well traveled, having stayed in tents on the beach to luxury hotels all over the globe and am keeping an open mind writing this review as I typically stay clear of all inclusive resorts and cruises. We picked the Occidental based off the price and close location to the southern reefs for diving on the island. First thing, nobody in our group of 6 got sick in the 6 days. We took normal precautions, but used ice in drinks like everyone else, and ate all meals at the resort. Food: from the reviews I was expecting we would be eating off the resort. There's so many different selections though, you will find something palatable. The buffet was worse than cruise food, the restaurants however a step above. It is what it is. It's an inexpensive Mexican resort so don't have high expectations. You won't go hungry. Staff: Helpful, friendly, and just amazing. Best part of our stay. The resort and room is what I was expecting. A 3 star resort with some needed facelifts. I hate to disappoint any beach lovers, but the beach is eroded and and water was never clear near the beach. However there is a small beach area with chairs and the sunsets are amazing. We hired a private dive guide that picked us up daily at the pier in front of the hotel. I highly suggest that for divers not wanting a crowded dive boat. There is a pier fee of $3 pp per day. We used Ivan with Private Diving. Look up his 5 star Tripadvisor reviews. We we come back to this resort for diving? Heck, yes. Would we come back to just stay without diving? Probably not. But, I can see how this resort could appeal to a lot of folks out there.

Miserable stay and unresponsive hotel management
My entire family was sickened after eating at the beach restaurant. We spent half of our week-stay in bed. Multiple other guests were also sick. We had two rooms. One did not have a phone. The other had a toilet problem that was never fixed. The room was dark and various light fixtures did not work. I found a tarantula in my bathroom. We followed up with the hotel seeking a refund. They apologized but then claimed that they were not receiving our multiple follow-up emails (we sent emails from the US from different servers).

Fun scuba experience.
We didn’t love the resort as much as others we’ve stayed at (seemed kind of dirty/unkempt) and not very big. Very good experience with diving though. We dove everyday and had experiences with Kostas, Sami, Daniel, and Nanu. We found them all amazing
