Hotel Spring Break Policy - The resort is a family oriented environment and thus has implemented the following policy for Spring Breakers reservations. The valid period is March 1st, 2020 to April 30th, 2020. Spring Breakers are defined
as Students/youth between 16 and 23 years of age.
- One parent or chaperone at least 25 years of age will be required per room for check-in. Adults accompanying are responsible for the students’ behavior.
- In the event that any guest(s) engage in inappropriate behavior disrespecting Hotel staff and/or other guests or causing physical damages to the facilities, the Hotel Management reserves the right to expel the guest(s) without reimbursement or refund of the remaining nights.
Spring Break Groups Policy - Students/youth are considered between 16 and 23 years of age. In addition to the Spring Break Policy for all bookings traveling March-April, Groups shall adhere to the following conditions:

O'Neill Family Adventure!
Here are the "wins" for this resort. 1. Pool is amazing. Massive! 2. Tons of daily activities. 3. Japanese Restaurant is fantastic. 4. Super Friendly Staff. 5. Buffet is fairly good. Lots of selection. 6. Rooftop bar/patio with amazing sunset views. 7. Live music each night. 8. The bed was extremely comfortable. Amazing actually! Here are the "misses" for the resort. 1. Beach feels far away and disconnected from resort. 2. No palapas on the beach. No shade. This was a deal breaker for me as an ocean guy. 3. Alcohol drinks were terrible. Sugary and watered down unlike anything I have seen! 4. The prices at the resort are nothing short of price gauging! Unbelievable!! All in all, we had a great time as a family. However, I would not personally come back because of these issues. I think this resort is especially good for young families due to all of the kids activities. If you are not a beach person I would give this a try!
Girls Trip 2023
Great time on our girls trip. The staff was very friendly. A special thanks to Nick and Karen for their exceptional service. The both of them went above and beyond to make our trip special. Nick recommended a wonderful restaurant for the birthday dinner. The drinks could be of better quality alcohol but we made it work. The Japanese restaurant had great food. The buffet had a variety of items. Beach staff was very nice - Antonio, Jesus and our girl Karen kept the tequila shots coming. We will come back again.
Hidden gem on pacific coast
I loved this place. About an hour from the airport. Location is away from the river so water was warm and clear. You could see manta rays swimming in the morning. Rooftop bar was awesome. Plenty of pool space. Gorgeous beach. Restaurants were ok, but I liked the buffet at lot. Tucked away in the mountains. A little secluded. There’s a small town close by if you want to get out. The beachfront rooms are worth it, the walk is a little long to the front of hotel and it’s on a hillside. But that didn’t bother me and added to its vibe.
We returned a week or so ago from 7 days at the Iberostar Playa Mita and unfortunately, I’ve got to say we left feeling very disappointed. To provide a bit of context, we travelled with our 3 kids (ages 4, 2.5, and 15 months) and my Dad also joined us down there. I had researched a ton of resorts and was optimistic about this one as I had heard positive things through friends of friends and had read some of the positive reviews but it was not at all what we expected. The Good…because it definitely wasn’t 100% terrible: -We upgraded to a beach access suite and this was 100% worth it. The room itself was nothing special but the location was amazing, having the deck looking out on the beach and ocean was so nice. Literally steps from the beach and also close to the pool area which is where we basically lived while we were there so that was great. -Pool area was nice and getting chairs was never an issue. I’ve been to resorts where every chair has a towel on it at 6:00 am, not the case here. In fact, this was the first resort I’ve been to where it seemed no one really got going until 9:00 or 9:30. We were up early with the kids but grabbing a spot on the beach or at the pool, or getting seated at the buffet for breakfast was a breeze. -Beach is beautiful and the ocean is clean and was really warm. Our kids had a ball playing in the waves, there were some vendors but it never felt busy in that regard. -A few staff members stood out who were super friendly and happy to go out of their way to help: Egduardo and Emmanuel at concierge, everyone that we met working down at the beach area (Kevin, Karen, Antonio, Jesus), and Fernando at the pool bar, were all amazing. The Bad: -The app, which they instruct you to use for essentially everything (booking reservations, ordering room service, viewing activities etc) did not work for us until day 5. We were told to delete it and reload it, use capital letters instead of lower case, restart your phone and try again…it did not work. It was brutal. So after 3 straight dinners at the buffet which was totally underwhelming at best, we finally approached concierge to help us book some reservations. We were told they can only do that in the mornings, when we would go see them in the mornings we were told all restaurants were booked up. After 2 days of this my husband spoke to the head concierge who essentially told him if we aren’t happy we should book at another resort and leave. Nice 5 star service. Egduardo and Emmanuel then stepped in and helped us book dinners for the remainder of our trip which was greatly appreciated and an absolute game changer, the amount of time wasted initially though was totally ridiculous. -The food overall was just okay, for a 5 star resort I expected it would be much better, but it was definitely just sort of mediocre all the way around. -The fridge in our room was broken. The milk we had for our kids curdled overnight. They sent someone to fix it but it continued not to work the entire week so we just stopped storing anything in there. One of the phones in our room barely worked, I got a call from the PR office looking for feedback about half way through our trip and couldn’t even share with her how things had gone (good or bad) because she couldn’t hear me and the call dropped twice. Somewhat ironic. The wifi cut in and out regularly and a few days into the trip all of a sudden the login was completely different which no one felt the need to mention. -With the resort being built on a hill, elevators were essential and these elevators were extremely tiny. They would be max 4 people standing very close together. Good way to meet other guests though. -The service overall was one of the most disappointing things about our experience at this place. I’ve been to Mexico (various areas at various resorts and condos) 9 times and I have always found the staff literally everywhere I’ve stayed amazing. I can’t recall one bad experience. There were staff I came across here who were not only unfriendly, they were blatantly rude. Our experience with the head concierge telling us to book elsewhere was mind boggling. We also one morning had set our things down at the pool while we went to the cafe to get some snacks for the kids and coffee for ourselves. It was probably 8:30 and the pool was completely dead. On our way back to our pool chairs there was a staff member walking the opposite direction with her hands completely full of our kids water wings, our towels, our backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, you name it. We asked what she was doing and she told us before 9:00 if you leave anything out it’s automatically taken to lost and found. So had we not bumped into her, we would have had no clue where any of our stuff went, we would have lost our towels, it all would have simply been gone by the time we got back (20 minutes is how long we left it). She said she would get our towels back and then proceeded to disappear so after waiting for half an hour we were able to talk the towel guy into giving us towels (reluctantly) after explaining the situation. The Ugly: -2 of our 3 kids got sick while we were there. Vomiting and all the rest, I will spare the details. -My Dad got so sick from one of the restaurants, he almost missed his flight 36 hours later. Only after calling the resort doctor, getting shots, electrolytes, and medication to take before boarding his plane was he able to turn a corner and actually leave. It was an absolute nightmare. I read so many reviews and did a ton of research before booking here and was encouraged by all of the returning guests who have visited 3,4,5 times over a number of years. It has potential, it’s in a beautiful location and does have some positive features. Unfortunately, the property is in need of some maintenance, a complete and total overhaul on customer service, and enhancing things like the app, wifi, improving the food and so on before I would consider this even remotely close to a 5 star. We will never go back.
Awesome waves and beautiful beach.
Stayed at Iberostar Playa Mita in May 2023. Travel to the hotel by taxi is expensive, about $115 dollars. You can Uber, but they don’t come into the airport. You have to cross the highway on the pedestrian bridge to catch the Uber. Taxi back to the airport from the hotel is $45 or 750 pesos. Our room with a sunset view had a great ocean view , I don’t see the need to pay extra for the oceanfront. Some people complained of a musty smell on their reviews. We did not note that at all. Air conditioning was very strong to remove humidity. The beds were very comfortable and the room was spacious with a nice balcony to enjoy coffee and watch the ocean waves in the morning. Beach is nice, walkable, flat. Great waves for boogie boarding. The boogie boards are not free, but you can ‘buy’ the board for $40, and use it during your whole stay, and then they buy it back for $20. The waves are constant, sometimes too big for us, but we were able to boogie board every day during our 11 day stay, so it was worth it. The beach has a lot of small rocks as you go out, so recommend water shoes. Also, two people got stung by a stingray in the shallow water. We also saw Munk’s devil rays cruising the waves along the coast in schools. These are not dangerous, they do not have stingers and do not bite. They cruise the shores eating plankton. During August there are lots of stingrays that do have stingers near the shore, so you need to shuffle your feet as you get in the water to avoid stepping on one and getting stung. There is a lagoon down the beach that has crocodile warnings near it. No fences or barricades. Some reviews expressed concern about crocodiles in the ocean. This apparently is relatively rare and only occurs during the rainy season when the inland lagoon fills up and flows into the bay. Restaurants. We had no trouble booking reservations on the Iberostar App during our stay in May. I would recommend to download the iberostar app. It was not high season, so not crowded. We were not limited to how many we could reserve. That being said, we actually enjoyed the buffet. The buffet had above average food. We enjoyed the Caesar salad, greek salad and the fruit selections. They also had pizza which was good, especially if you snagged a piece freshly removed from the oven. Mexican restaurant was our favorite. They have a buffet to start. The grilled corn was fantastic. Guacamole was very good as was pozole. Fajitas were good. The bitter chocolate dessert was outstanding, not bitter at all. Best chocolate dessert I’ve had anywhere in Mexico. Ramon at the mexican restaurant was our favorite waiter. Japanese restaurant was hibachi style cooked in front of you. Our chef did not appear to be experienced and the ‘show’ was not very engaging. The food itself was just ok. French/gourmet restaurant was a disappointment. The steak was tough, gristly. We did enjoy the french onion soup. Dessert was not memorable. Steak house we had the short ribs which were good. The blooming onion was greasy and not as good as I had anticipated. Vegetables were hard/undercooked. We did not get steaks as the steak at the French/gourmet restaurant was not good. There is also a small bar down by the beach where they serve tacos and ceviche for lunch every day. It’s very convenient if you are lounging on the beach, and the fish tacos are very good. Drink service on the beach was also good. Kudos to Kevin on the beach. I recommend bringing your own insulated drink container. They do not give you bottled water to protect the environment. They have water dispensers with filtered water in the halls. They do provide some glass bottles in your room for the water, but don’t allow you to take the glass bottles to the pool or beach. The hotel has a shuttle to Sayulita, 140 pesos per person round trip. Leaves around 945 and returns at noon. That’s enough time to do a little shopping. We did not feel the need to spend more time than that. The entertainment in the theater was fairly generic singing and dancing. We did not enjoy it. We did like the live band that played most nights in the lobby bar. Very good singer in the ‘Starband’ that did songs in both spanish and english. Also, one night they had an excellent circus/fire show at the sunset bar. That was the best entertainment all week, so plan on showing up early to get a seat. The sunset bar itself is worth visiting each evening to enjoy the sunset and drinks. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and would come again.
