    Stay 27th April-5th May

Excellent all round as always. Major issue with Spain power outage while we were there. Excellent planning by RIU to mitigate this issue, Staff implemented the procedures with ease. It did not affect our stay at all. Brilliant all round performance RIU and Staff.

    Very, very disappointing.

The Riu Monica appears to be a top class hotel but having stayed there recently I cannot possibly recommend it to anybody under 75 or anybody wanting a relaxing comfortable holiday. Choosing a single adjective to describe our stay was taxing but it would be somewhere between dreadful and very disappointing. The guest profile was aged between 65 and 85 and the hotel catered for this age group with stodgy, unimaginative food (often lukewarm) and abysmal entertainment most nights. Riu hotels have a fine reputation but the Riu Monica, whilst looking imposing from the outside, delivers very little for a pricey hotel and is not value for money. We changed our room after two nights as we were sleepless due to the noise from adjoining rooms -- TV's, toilets flushing at all hours and people shouting at each other. The hotel kindly re- located us without any fuss so they are well aware of this problem. This is an adults only hotel which reminded us of my dead mother's nursing home. The average was nearer 80 than 70. We spoke to many of the guests about the hotel -- they had similar complaints but were too reticent to bring them to the attention of the management. We booked for 9 night breakfast and dinner but ate out on 5 nights due to our dislike of the restaurant.. We asked if we could change to breakfast only after two nights but Tui, who we booked with, said ask the hotel management. Riu said that they could not change the booking. So it cost us an additional £450 plus but was money well spent. The catering was poor. The dining room was chaotic with hundreds of people scrambling for lukewarm food -- why not have have two separate sittings for dinner to make dining more pleasant? Seems obvious. I believe that they used to have two sittings but changed recently??? The food was uninspiring but ok if you liked burnt bacon and cold beans for breakfast and pizzas and paella (after a fashion) for dinner. Even the salads were poor (one or sometimes two choices of lettuce varieties). You could choose a reasonable meal if you had the time, strength and wit to avoid the person pushing you from behind. The waiting staff tried hard, but failed to deal with so many people -- there was often a queue to get into the dining room and once in the restaurant it was manic with plenty of hand waving and gesticulating by the waiters. Taking food from breakfast for later consumption was rife -- you could spot the culprits with their big, open topped carrier bag by their seat -- ready to surreptitiously drop food into. Again this is difficult to monitor but there was no deterrent notice so many people prepared their own lunch. The rooms were very good and well presented except for the bath towels which were dire -- very thin fabric and very small ok for under 11's -- this is an adults only hotel!!! Towels were changed regularly and the cleaning service was excellent. The pools were also problematic as most well positioned sun beds were "booked" before 8am but often not occupied until many, many hours later. We know that this is difficult to manage but even a polite notice might help. It was sad to see guests walking out of the bar lounge during the entertainment performances but it was unsurprising -- most of the acts were very poor. The dance floor was minimal and dominated every evening by a couple of very good dancers who took the floor for every dance and basically showed off. Guests were not happy and were very reluctant to dance. so there was plenty of moaning clients. The hotel management said that they were pleased to hear our verbal (and then written) views on the hotel as they would be helpful but we have not heard anything from them since. I wonder if the letter went straight into the waste bin? Luckily we only booked for 9 night instead of 14 and, as Riu customers, we hope that they will address the issues that we raised as we take little pleasure in writing this review.

Adults only of a certain age

Despite what previous reviews have said the hotel wasn’t that dated. It was very clean, entertainment wasn’t for us, as more like pub singers. Drinks and food okay, but the main barman didn’t seem to be enjoying his work , very unfriendly.

    Lovely hotel, great location

just out of town and just a short walk about 10 mins to the main square but plenty of bars restaurants close by. Staff are great and very helpful, food in the restaurant is good and plenty of options at breakfast and dinner, usually something to suit everyone. Rooms are spacious and comfy beds. Only issue is the bathrooms need updating especially the towels need replacing they’re like sandpaper, been saying this the last couple of times we’ve stayed.

    Perfect week away

This hotel was immaculately clean. Every member staff looked happy to be there . The bar staff knew our drinks after only two days( my fault as I changed drinks the second evening) wondered service. The reception staff were courteous and friendly. Beautiful view from our 7th floor room. Every morning and evening the food in the buffet restaurant was fresh and tasty. Could not fault it and so much choice. Drink's west reasonably priced and the lunchtime restaurant by the pool was also perfect again friendly staff.
