    Nice but marred by inconsistency

Interestingly, we were here twice in one visit - first when we flew into Hilo and then when we flew out. The experiences were significantly different. The first visit was great. Big shout out to reservation person Betty Star who was wonderful to work with. We had a fifth floor room, which we later found out was important as all the floors below that have not been upgraded. The staff was friendly and helpful. On the second visit, we were met by a grumpy young man who was annoyed that we arrived early. “Check in is at 3 - come back later.” Because of the threat of a Kona Low, we asked about driving conditions and weather. Not very helpful. In contrast, we arrived early at the hotel in Kona and were also early. But they were friendly about, suggested some activities, and actually got us in a bit early. On the second visit, there was still trash on the terrace and no shower amenities. Because this was a 4th floor room, it was not upgraded. We had to get several tiny plastic bottles of shampoos, conditioner, etc. There were few plugs and one didn’t work, so challenging to charge electronics for a family. The biggest drawback here is that the experience with this hotel is so inconsistent - depending on staff, time of day, events happening, etc. Would not recommend food from the bar. It as slow and - again - inconsistent. They do have gluten-free options, which was great. The rooms were comfortable but try to get a room that is not facing Babylon Drive, as they are more noisy. Plan on planes going overhead at 6am. We were very, very greatful that this hotel is very close to the airport, with gas to fill up your car only a few minutes away.

Glorious Outdated Hotel (not a bad review)

It is definitely an outdated 90's hotel given the decor but is in decent shape. The people working there were really nice and helpful. The room itself was clean, spacious and comfortable. It would say that in its prime it was a 4.5 Star Hotel but is now a 3.5 Star Hotel as many updates are required. When we were flying from Hilo to Honolulu, we saw the roof of the hotel and there was fire damage (perhaps volcano).

    Bugs, black mold, dirty, outdated.

I stayed here for 7 nights. When I arrived to check in, luckily there was only one person in front of me. Once that person left, I stepped forward to approach the counter and after being completely ignored, the front desk employee (Josiah) asks me “do you need help with something?” as I stood there with my suitcase in hand. I told him I was checking in. Josiah just said “credit card and ID” so I handed him both. Then I asked him if it was possible to get a room on a high floor. He very seriously said “with how busy we are you get what you get.” I found it to be pretty rude for him to tell me that when a simple “no, we are fully booked tonight” would have sufficed. I didn’t feel like complaining to a supervisor since I was there to relax and I was tired from a cross-country trip so I just ignored him and went to my room. I wasn’t at the hotel much during my first few days there (I was out, busy sightseeing) but a few days later I noticed there was black mold around the A/C unit in the room. There were several LAYERS of dust in the edges between the walls and carpet as well as the wooden luggage rack by the desk (see photos). To top it off, there little bugs crawling around the wooden desk which looked like termites (see photos). As soon as I noticed I went to the front desk and asked for a manager so I could address these issues. The girl working at the front desk was very nice. I did not get her name but she was the only employee I saw that had red hair. She told me that the manager wasn’t available at the moment and asked me what was going on. I gave her all the details and she immediately apologized and started trying to get a hold of the manager. She was not able to contact him but told me that she would let the manager know as soon as he got back to call me. About 10 minutes later, tue same young lady called my room and told me they would be changing me to another room a few doors down. She then came and brought my new room keys to me and profusely apologized for the issues and offered her help in the future. The manager then called my room and he also apologized and offered his help as well. I was happy with how they dealt with the situation and the new room was a major improvement, no issues there. After all that, my stay was better but I still find it unacceptable for any hotel room anywhere to have issues like these.

    Overpriced..under performed

Overpriced..under delivered This hotel harkens back to what must have been the bygone days of tourism in Hilo. The hotel shows it's age. For example, the light in the restroom constantly flickered rendering the bathroom almost unusable. Air conditioning was not particularly effective. Open the windows, you ask? Not really, it's pouring rain and at 6:00 in the morning jets from the nearby commercial airport take off creating a thunderous noise. Additionally, the hotel charged a $30 Resort fee which was useless given that we checked in a ten at night and out at 8:00 in the morning. I get it. It's a means to Simply meant money. It also seems totally unfair.

Just stopped to eat. Best burgers ever in nice setting.

We ONLY ate dinner here, on a weeknight, in the bar. Great meal! Last minute decision to eat and “wait out rush hour) instead of driving back home with husband. Was 4pm so dining room not open yet. Sat at window table near a quiet bar-people theee, but nobody was loud. Lovely view of shore, water, fisherman & coconut island. Ordered 2 hamburgers. Mine with side salad, his with fries. They were huge, lots of fresh fixings. I couldn’t finish mine, so took 1/2 home. Best burgers we’ve had in a long time. Salad was fresh. Fries were crispy. $17 seemed pricey-but finding a full sit-down meal for less than $20 is not bad. Service was spot on. Meal was a bit slow, but we’d wanted to linger, so was perfect for our situation. We even appreciated the country music playing, but probably could have requested other, since our waitress was playing her playlist.
