  Disappointing

  Chose this hotel,for locality and charm as wanted to avoid modern hotels. Our superior room was in fact quite basic for what I would have expected on the star rating. Breakfast were good although the two areas were unexpected. One continental and one full Irish breakfast. If you wanted fruit then had to go to one and take it to the other. Our one meal was a pre theatre meal and was very disappointing as was the evening service. We did complain and were not charged however it was my birthday so did put a dampener on the evening. Not really a 4 star hotel in my view.

  Not 4 star, more like a low 2 star.

  The staff are very helpful and informative. The room and hotel need an update. Our room was utterly freezing cold. We asked 3 times about the heating, it never came on once. So take a huge dressing gown! We had an evening meal there, I felt sorry for the servers, it was quite busy but there simply wasn’t enough staff at all. We waiting for ages to have plates taken away and to order a pudding. There was a singer on, honestly, he was so incredibly loud we could even chat whilst enjoying our meal. We thought he’d sing more traditional Irish songs which are well known. He sang his own version or songs no none had heard of. In summary, we will not be returning!

  OK, but ? 4 star

  This quaint hotel in a Georgian building has some charm, with higgledy-piggledy stairs, a couple of cosy sitting rooms, and towering staircases adorned with paintings. It is a 15 minute walk to the city centre. Our room was basic: clean but tired, but lacked the niceties of a 4-star hotel, such as tissues, body lotion, a safe, a robe and slippers. The radiator worked periodically, the shower took an age to run warm, and the shower room was quite cold. ‘Organics’ shampoo and shower gel were provided. Tea & coffee making needs and a hairdryer were available. The one meal we had in the restaurant (a pasta dish) was tasteless, with a watery sauce, so bad we complained to the manager. The young serving staff are friendly and helpful but need more training. Breakfasts are good and plentiful. We feel this hotel should be 3-star.

  Supernice hotel

  Supernice hotel. Room was nice, quite and clean. Continental breakfast had everything you would want. They made sure for us to check in earlier since we had a redeye flight. We really appreciate the effort they put in to clean the room for early check in. It will not be fogotten. It is a family owned hotel and it is a very friendly and warm atmosphere. I will definitely stay there again. Close to everything in the city

  Not exactly what I was hoping for

  I stayed at the Castle Hotel for several nights, having chosen it for its promise of distinctive character and charm. My booking was later extended by one night, which required a change of room and offered a useful comparison. The first room was disappointing. It was an apartment-style room located in an adjacent building, requiring us to exit the hotel to access it via a rather steep staircase. The interior was somewhat bare, with modest furnishings and a kitchenette which almost felt larger than the bathroom, and it had little of the character I had expected. The level of cleanliness also left me somewhat perplexed. I have included a photograph of the shower tray, where droplets of water immediately took on a dark colour, suggesting that the surface was not particularly pristine. Had my stay been limited to that room, my impression would have been quite negative, especially given the rate, which was by no means inexpensive. The second room, within the main hotel building, was altogether different and corresponded much more to expectations. Breakfast is offered in two forms: a generous buffet with a magnificent selection of sweet and savoury items and outstanding jams, and a more structured à la carte service. I also enjoyed an excellent dinner in the lower ground floor, among the brick vaults – a most authentic and atmospheric setting. The main dining room was fully occupied, with a talented singer-guitarist performing, so we were seated in the second room. This proved most agreeable, allowing easy conversation while still enjoying the music. The food was impeccably prepared, substantial and very flavoursome. Overall a stay with some very positive points and some less so, which fulfilled its purpose. I would not, however, place it at the very top of my list for a return to Dublin.
