Don't bother with VIP
First of all, do not bother with VIP adult only. The only real benefit is the free room service (although calling and ordering was way more complicated than it should be), the small VIP lounge, and the private buffet area. Other than that, the private beach area wasn't great, our room was the furthest from the beach, and we didn't have priority for restaurants (since they don't do reservations). The food was best at the Mexican restaurant and the buffet was fine, however the Brazilian wasn't great and my boyfriend got extremely sick the night we had the Mediterranean and couldn't leave the room the entire next day. Maybe avoid the salmon. The room was also pretty rough. The beds were EXTREMELY uncomfortable and the pillows were bad too. The shower fluctuated from scalding hot to freezing cold super often so taking showers was an awful experience. Our room also had no wifi besides on the toilet and next to the door. Speaking of wifi, there was wifi throughout the entire resort which was good but it was super choppy and would disappear and come back depending on where you were. (would go from 3 bars to 0 within 3 feet.) The beach unfortunately had a bunch of garbage although we saw workers cleaning often. We went on a walk and there was a ton. The resort is also at the edge of the tourist residences so you cannot walk to the left otherwise you'll meet mountains of garbage. The maid did a great job and the bartenders were great. Workers did the best they could with what they had. All in all, wouldn't recommend

DO NOT GO/STAY HERE!!
Eight of us visited the Marien Puerto Plata for the day. I am very glad our stay was for that day only. The pool was very large and clean, but that is where the positive experience ended. The bathroom off the pool only had 1 working toilet (there were 3 toilets). There was water dripping from the ceiling in the working stall so you got dripped on using the bathroom. Plus, the stench was overwhelming! We thought the lunch buffet was nice until at the end when a few of us used the bathroom to avoid the one by the pool, an employee came out of a stall and DID NOT WASH HER HANDS. Also, weird quirk, only water, juice and beer are served with lunch. There is no bar service. Lastly, the shops near the main lobby are rented spaces by vendors and not owned by the hotel. The workers in the store constantly bombard you each time you walk by to come into the store. When someone in our group walked past the Larimar shop, a display of 2 small wooden carvings fell. The employee demanded she be paid $100 for the pieces. My friend is the nicest person ever and immediately gave her money. The small wood carvings (they could fit in your hand) are the kind every shop has that is ordered online and costs $3 each from China. These were not actual hand carved figurines. I felt so bad for my friend because I knew she had been scammed. I talked with 2 resort employees, Yamiry and Wilnely, but neither offered any assistance. They said the shops are not part of the resort so they do not get involved. I do not recommend staying here, even for just a day. The resort is in need of some TLC and the service is severely lacking.

Rundown resort
Run down resort. It's not the same after it was taken over by Marien. Rooms are very outdated. food is mediocre. Staff is not happy there. it looks like they all want to just move out or not getting paid. Beach is also in very bad state. Stay away at any cost.

The Good, Bad & Ugly..
Currently at resort, been here almost a week. First time in Puerto Plata. I’d give this a resort a generous 3 star. Travelled many islands and I’d compare this to a 4-5 star Cuba resort. The mountain view is breathtaking and the landscaping well kept. The rooms are older but cleaned well, we left generous tip daily so not sure if we got better service. The rooms were very cool which was nice after a hot day. The lobby is disappointing, there’s no bar so nobody hangs out. No real spot for people to congregate too before dinner. Off the lobby is a sports bar that no one goes too. Outside the lobby going to where rooms/pool located there’s shops. There’s a lot of shops and staff harasses you every time you walk by. Not sure why resort needs so many shops versus hang out spots. Only two spots to hang: snack bar and pool bar. The beach area is full of garbage from sea. Other close by resorts clean beach area but this one doesn’t seem to. The VIP area on beach is located near bins so no body really hangs there. Pool is very nice and well kept, cleaned daily and adequate shade seating. No swim up bar but bar close by. Staff is just ok, some are friendly, some are rude. Resort is all Canadians majority being Quebecois. The food is ok, but repetitive. We went to a local restaurant Lê Petite Francois for lobster and that was a great experience and price reasonable. I’d recommend going to Punta Cana and paying the few dollars more as you get more bang for your buck.

I would come back here. And thank you all the hard working friendly staff. Job well done.
Having a great experience at the Marien, and I don’t understand the negativity from others. Rooms are clean, staff is friendly and welcoming, entertainment is very well done, ocean is salty with lots of shells, food is excellent, all good here! Comparable to VH, and lot hell of a lot quieter than Emotions with their thumpy music until 3 am! ( Never again ) We actually got a main floor room, close to the ocean on the first try!! So very happy with that as well! If you wanna nitpick, the walkways are worn down and could use replacing. But it’s minor. Ps. Wifi is decent as well, not overly fast, but I am send this review from my room! Lovin life here, such a nice change from cold snowy Canada!
