Poolside Activity Let-down
We enjoyed our trip in 2025 so we booked 10 days from Mar 28 to April 7th 2026. Our complaint was the change to the daily pool entertainment. Last year, it was fun and upbeat and everyone was so energized by the pool. This year, in the morning we listened to Alan Jacksons full cd, Dean Martins or some old guy singing even CHRISTMAS Music...,..throw in some Anne Murray and Johnny Cash. It was horrible to sit and listen to this while in the Dominican. No offence to any of these artists, but if I travel from another country (Canada) - it is not to listen to this! I complained, 4 members from my party complained, My partner who is 73, just got up on his own to complain (we laughed - if he is complaining - it has to be bad!) I met about 4 other people that said their parties also complained. The BOSS in the pool bar section advised us not to complain to the reception, we just had to tell them. He said they were catering to an older crowd now. I am 58 and my partner is 73. I tried to investigate and I think his name is William. We complained to reception, to VIP and to the pool BOSS directly. The next day and every day after....guess what was playing? The sports bar (formerly the Disco) was always fun at night in 2025. The entertainment staff would join us for a bit and make it even better. I think they have been told they are not allowed to do that anymore. We were there during Holy week, and the Dominican Family's came for the weekend. They did not pick up their plastic cups and straws and left them everywhere. I felt bad for the staff. - just saying. Rooms were the same, value was good, cleanliness the same. The VIP beach area was dead. No problem getting a day bed at any time during the day. Staff was great as always. Same wonderful guy in the VIP buffet section we call Mimosa man. (last year he made such an effort to get my mom a morning mimosa - we didn't ask this year - they never have champagne in the morning or have to work to hard to get it) The pool bar - those two guys were always pleasant and pretended to remember us from last year lol. Herman - wears a black shirt and seems to have no personality. I wanted his name so I could mention him here. I asked his name and he asked mine then remembered it and was very pleasant after that. Jackie says hi! VIP - do not bother asking for a late check out. Check out is 12 and in two years, the most they ever extend it is 1 hour. We left at 7pm and asked once again for all our rooms to be able to use one room later. 1pm - all the rooms are booked they say. pfft I quite enjoyed the buffet in 2025, but this year it was very repetitive and slightly disappointing. I still found something to eat of course. The restaurants were great as always. Our VIP towels - only changed 2 times. You have to be in your room when they come or you get to reuse your old wet ones. Whereas, regular towels you can exchange at the pool where they play the music. The new pool entertainment does not seem to have microphone headsets like they did when Hello Kitty was there. Just one guy inside the booth playing music his boss tells him he HAS to play. If anyone from the Marien reads this....Your poolside entertainment is what makes a vacation. I do not need my bed made every day - but I sure need some real interaction with the group we watch while sitting around the pool! I can't express enough how important this is. If I was too old, I would more to a different side of the pool where I wasn't watching them. This was a major faux pas on your part whoever decided this. Loved the buggy rides! Did not enjoy the Air Transat "millionaire for a day" yacht trip - but only because it was pouring and there were too many people piled into one tiny section of the boat. Our included lunch was bologna, cheese and bread and the restaurant we went to for Isle of Bonita, was ok but the washrooms were rough lol. The champagne was awesome - but I chose not to drink anything else when my daughter visited the washrooms on the boat. The wifi was so much better this year! I purchased a E-sim and barely used any of the 10G. My daughter and niece used theirs lol - always on their phones. My partner got sick inside the buffet and the staff were so good and helpful and understanding. They had the doctor there before I could even think straight. He insisted it was because he rinsed his toothbrush with tap water - trust me, we did that 3-5 times and didn't get sick - he just wasn't drinking enough water and he doesn't drink alcohol. Thank you for being so helpful and professional. We will not return unfortunately due to the poolside activities that so completely missed the mark. I have a sun allergy, and thankfully brought an umbrella that gave me added protection from the sun - and the periods of rain lol. But you have to get up early to save your palapa - and that is not allowed. I got up at 5am and stayed on it. I can sleep anywhere. Perhaps just not while listening to Alan Jackson....

SMOKERS PARIDISE
If you don't smoke or have lung issues don't go here. There are no smoking rules that are enforced by staff and MANAGEMENT. I complained several times and to no avail even though I told them I have Copd. Another person in our 6 group also used a puffer. I was told at one time to tell them myself which ended in an angry confrontation with an obnoxious drunk. I am a 72 year old woman.. On another occasion a drunk with a cigarette was told after an hour of 2 complaints was told he couldn't smoke. He got up and stumbled over chairs and tables and fell onto the concrete. His face the next day in the buffet was a mess. His left eye was so swollen it was shut and his head bandaged up. This should never of happened if they did their job. Don't think I'm allowed to post his picture . In the picture below you will see an ashtray on the table by the pool and bar. So getting a drink and breathing this in was terrible. It took me 4 days to recover from all the smoke I had to inhale. People were evensmoking cigars. None of us will ever return. I'm sure the good reviews are all smokers. No complaints about the food or restaurants. Just the smoking but I feel people need to be aware of the before they book.

Drops the ball
We are at this Resort from March 7th to March 17th 2026. We had booked an ocean view room. Our troubles started at check-in. I had called twice before we left for vacation and inquired about VIP packages. Apparently, there are two options. You can have the VIP rooms which are adult only, or you can keep your room and just have the VIP package. Both times that I inquired about it I was told that the VIP package, which was $25 a night extra in US dollars for the room. I needed it for 9 nights. The person at the counter, at check-in, was trying to tell me that I needed 10 days. I told him my first night I didn't need it since we had checked in at 6:00 in the evening. He was getting angry that I would only want nine nights. In Canadian dollars it came out to $311.00. They told me that their prices had gone up and it would be $25 us per person. I told them that I had called three weeks previously and the price I was given was $25 us per room. After 5 minutes of arguing with me, he decided to charge me per room instead of per person. There was another individual that had interrupted while we were discussing the cost. We ended up going to our room and discovered that we didn't have the lock for the safe. We went back to the check encounter and asked about the lock. The same individuals told me that it didn't come with the VIP package and showed me very small print on their little Bulletin that it was no longer included. Again, I told them that the lady I spoke with 3 weeks previously told me that is the exact same package, but I would get to keep my Ocean View room. One of the taller gentleman who passed himself off has an evening supervisor asked me if I recorded the conversation because he was implying that I was lying about the conversation. I told him I didn't realize that I needed to protect myself by recording my conversations with staff at the hotel. My wife looked at the individuals when they offered a refund on the VIP room and mentioned that wouldn't it make more sense to give us a lock for $3 a day included into the price instead of getting a $311 refund taken away from the hotel. Imagine that, not including $3 a day for 10 days us and risking losing $311 for VIP! Where does this make sense, and how does this help the hotel? Our room was very clean and kept up by the maid personnel. It took 3 days for us to get our house coats, slippers, welcome package, VIP Banner on the door, and the bottle of rum that is promised in this package. For the first 4 days there weren't any games by the pool. When I inquired with one of the entertainment staff about why, I was told that the hotel terminated four of the staff because they were not engaging with the guests. They finally started doing minor games with the staff, but nobody would walk around engaging with the guest and trying to recruit people to get involved. The buffet in the food is extremely plain, and there are two sides in the buffet area to get your food. Unfortunately, both sides always have the exact same selection. One evening I had the goat. I was sick the next day and had to stay in the room. On the second day when I was out and about I was speaking with many of the other guests that the resort. I encountered seven other guests that were sick the exact same day and discovered that we all had the goat. The à la carte restaurants we're decent, and we found the Mediterranean restaurant had the better selection. Even though we purchased the VIP package, you could only get the top shelf Liquors in the VIP lounge or on the VIP bar on the beach. If you went to the sports bar which belongs to the resort, you cannot get the top shelf liquor unless you paid cash extra. I had already paid $311 for VIP, so I feel that I should be getting top shelf liquor at any bar, I should not have to pay extra in the sports bar! This is the 11th time my wife and I have been to the Dominican Republic. This is the first time before any of the shows that we have found nobody engaging with the guess and bringing them up to teach them Merengue or Bachata dance before the main show starts. We have been to Puerto Plata 10 times. It's a nice resort, the beach was nice, but I will not be going back to this Resort. Between going to Puerto Plata 10 times and Punta Cana once, this is the worst Resort we have been to. What is even worse, is that we have met a friend on one of our past trips to the Dominican Republic. He is the mayor of the town named Cabarete. He tried to book one evening for him and his family, but was told that they would not give him a room for just one night. Imagine that, you have the mayor from one of your cities nearby and you won't give him a room for one day with his family!

Not as we expected
We stayed for a week, with the VIP package. Overall the cleanliness wasn’t too bad, though it is an older resort. The location is good, there are amenities close by that you can get to via taxi. However, If you’re wanting to have a comfortable bed, definitely don’t pick this resort. Was brutal trying to sleep on a rock hard bed for a week, plus the damp sheets in themselves weren’t great. Though I know that is common with resorts so my main concern was the uncomfortable bed! As for the atmosphere, the staff are friendly and helpful. However, It was not disclosed to us that locals are allowed on the resort, due to this there is very clearly trafficking going on by the locals and the feeling of safety, specifically at night is definitely lacking. Aside from the beach, pool, and disco that starts at 10pm each night there’s not much for activities. There’s one show each night at 9:30, the performers are great but it gets old watching the same people dance several nights in a row. Overall, we made the best of the trip but I wouldn’t go back. Safety is the biggest thing for me, and by the end of the trip I did not feel safe. If you’re going as an older couple, it could be the right resort for you!
