  Beautiful renovation, disappointing service

We’ve stayed at this property more than a dozen times when it was Andaz Mayakoba, and we loved it. This was our first stay since it became Alila Mayakoba. Unfortunately, it will be our last. First, the good news: the renovation is excellent. The rooms are better, the layout is improved and the gym is a real upgrade. Housekeeping kept the room clean. The property itself has never looked better. The service is where things fell apart. Check-in was flat, and even though we’re World of Hyatt Globalists, no one explained our benefits. The minibar was never restocked during our stay, and we had to ask for water several times. Breakfast was the worst of it. On the first day, no server came to our table until we’d already finished our first plates from the buffet, and we never got to order from the kitchen. The next day, our order came out completely wrong. The restaurant wasn’t open during its posted hours, and the dining options and food selection were limited. We ended up eating at neighboring resorts. There’s no shop for sundries or snacks, and there was no service at the lagoon, not even towels or water. The staff generally seemed unhappy, and it showed. It’s a shame, because the property is stunning. Until the service matches the renovation, we’ll stay at Rosewood or Banyan Tree next time we’re in Mayakoba.

  Amazing service and beautiful property

This is a special property located within the Mayakoba complex of Riviera Maya. The property is beautiful but was really blew me away was the service. I loved having a host (aka butler) to assist during my stay. They made me feel pampered and taken care of which was so nice during my solo stay.

Alila Mayakoba: Beautiful surroundings, but some room for improvement

Alila Mayakoba: Beautiful surroundings, but some room for improvement As someone who regularly stays at and reviews luxury hotels and resorts around the world, I tend to compare each property with other hotels we have experienced. In Mexico alone, we have stayed at The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Waldorf Astoria Cancun and Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, the latter on two separate occasions. Other luxury resorts we have experienced include Six Senses Laamu and The Standard Maldives, as well as Aurora Anguilla, Jumeirah Mina Al Salam in Dubai and Jumeirah Port Sóller in Mallorca. With these experiences as a point of reference, I always pay particular attention to service, dining, facilities and the small details that distinguish a truly exceptional luxury resort. Alila Mayakoba is a beautiful and spacious resort with a wonderful natural setting. It has a slightly Six Senses vibe, with its focus on nature, tranquility and understated luxury. One of the things I particularly enjoy is the layout. The resort is spread out, and cycling between different areas gives it an almost Maldives-like feeling. The long beach is lovely for walks, and having access to restaurants across several resorts within Mayakoba is a real advantage, especially when staying for several nights. Dining Our first dining experience at Na Cocina Local was unfortunately disappointing. The staff were lovely and the food was beautifully presented, but none of the dishes we ordered really appealed to us. Despite a relatively simple menu, the flavours felt unnecessarily complicated. Even the guacamole, normally a safe choice, was overwhelmed by coriander. Alisio Beach Club, on the other hand, has a very appealing menu, offering a good mix of fresh dishes and familiar classics. There is also a children’s menu, which is identical to the room service children’s menu. We also visited Cello at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, which is definitely on the pricier side. Unfortunately, the food did not quite live up to our expectations or the price point. The mushroom risotto was genuinely delicious and easily the highlight of the evening. However, both the carbonara and the lasagna were disappointing. For a restaurant in this category, we had expected a more consistently impressive dining experience. The room service menu itself is actually quite good, with plenty of options. Unfortunately, the execution was disappointing. Waiting over an hour for room service is unreasonable at a hotel of this standard, particularly when the food arrives completely cold. Another advantage of staying within Mayakoba is the opportunity to dine at neighbouring resorts. Bassano at Fairmont Mayakoba offers a more traditional Italian menu, with pizzas, pasta and familiar favourites, which is a welcome alternative, particularly when travelling with children. Breakfast Breakfast at Na Cocina Local is beautifully presented, and the à la carte egg options are a nice touch. However, compared with other luxury resorts we have visited, the buffet feels somewhat limited, particularly the surprisingly narrow selection of fresh fruit. Breakfast was not included in our booking, and I find the pricing rather steep for what is offered. Travelling with two daughters, aged 11 and 14, who both eat like little birds, makes the cost particularly noticeable, especially as our 14-year-old is charged the full adult price. I appreciate that teenagers can have very different appetites, but the pricing still feels difficult to justify given the selection. Service and attention to detail One thing that genuinely surprises me is the absence of a turndown service. At a resort positioning itself in this luxury category, it is something I would normally expect as standard. Overall impression Alila Mayakoba has a great deal going for it. The beautiful natural surroundings, spacious layout, long beach and the freedom to cycle around the property make it a very special place to stay. The atmosphere is peaceful, with a lovely balance between nature and luxury. However, when comparing it with other high-end resorts we have experienced, particularly properties such as Six Senses, I feel there are a few details that prevent the experience from fully matching its positioning and price point. A beautiful resort with plenty of potential, but the dining experience and some of the finer service details could be more consistent.

  Mini-Moon & Decompress

We went to Alila for a few days after our wedding. It was recommended by friends and we couldn't have asked for a better place to unwind. The rooms are organized in small buildings of 6-8 rooms scattered throughout the resort giving plenty of privacy, peace, and quiet. The beach, pool, and resort were beautiful. The food was fantastic. The staff was amazing. It really was the perfect place to decompress for a few days.

  Our New Favorite Hotel

My wife and spent 3 nights at the resort. We loved the entire experience. The hotel is beautiful, staff wonderful, food was delicious and setting breathtaking. The one thing that will bring us back is the service; our needs and expectations were exceeded with every interaction we had with the hotel staff.
