Great 2nd Visit. Will be back!
This is our second time staying at this hotel. The property is large and very unique with a lot of history. The restaurants were great. Lots to choose from. Bufetts were stocked with all food items. The staff were pleasant and. Very helpful. Rooms were clean and we'll maintained. The beach was at times a walk and a trek, but good exercise. We loved just lounging around by the pools all day. The pool attendants were very good in keeping everyone hydrated. The season is now starting to pick up so at times the wait can be a bit longer, but it's island time and everyone is on holiday. We really enjoyed the Castle View restaurant the steak and the lamb were very tasty! We travelled as 2 couples with kids.

Would visit again sometime
I was very impressed with this hotel in general. It was much larger than we usually visit, but as a lot of the guests were there for conferences, it wasn’t that busy around the pools during the day. Staff were very helpful and available throughout the day and evening. Special shout out to the lady who made us eggs every day, she remembered everyone’s choices each day with a smile. Only negatives were the difficulty getting up and down from the beach, as it was a lovely one to walk along. You cannot use the sea as it is too rough, we did know this before hand. Music around two of the pools was far too loud. Only pool without music was at the end of the blocks with no bar or toilet facilities.

Excellent mini vacation !
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful luxurious hotel, very lush and picturesque sitting on a cliff overlooking the crashing waves with well kept manicured lawns and trees. We loved walking the beach and around the grand property. The staff were always efficient and charming from the time we checked in and many times went beyond their call. Big thank you to the team ! Each meal were scrumptious and enjoyable from any of the restaurants but we mostly enjoyed Castle View meals. My favorite was seared scallops starter, followed by grilled lobster with creamy mashed potatoes. Yum yum !! Our room and bathroom were very clean , beds and linens were very comfortable for a good sleep. ( we admired the awareness to be environmentally engaged about laundry) . Our spacious balcony which overlooked the pool and Sam Lord’s Castle was a treat, a tranquil space to relax with a drink or coffee. All in all we had a tremendous memorable experience and we will sure to visit again. PS. Another Interesting, intriguing factor is the story of Sam Lord luring the ships for plunder in a deceitful manner by hanging lanterns on the trees . ..

Our best all-inclusive resort to date!?
We appreciated the opportunity to check in electronically so that when we arrived almost all of the paperwork was done and we were able to start enjoying our vacation right away. It was a major plus that thanks to our Diamond loyalty status we were upgraded to the Zephyr Suite before we left home. SLC is the first Wyndham that has done this for us rather than having to ask at check in if a suite is available. I cannot describe how this increased our anticipation this would be a great visit. We have not been disappointed. Upon arrival the bellman, Jose greeted us warmly and assisted us in unloading our bags. He had me follow him to the parking lot and then drove me back in his golf cart. He could have told me were to park, but his going to the extra effort truly impressed me. He personally took our bags to the room while we went to the check-in desk. Alyssa checked us in and again we got the royal treatment. She made us feel very welcome and escorted us to our room to gave us a tour of the suite. We have interacted with many members of the staff and I must say all have been positive. Everyone seems focused on looking after the guests but there are a few standouts: Karen (Mum to us) looked after us a number of times in the buffet. She is a very warm person and a great conversationalist. Toni works the omelette station. She is a vibrant, fun person. Not long into our stay she greeted us each morning like old friends and didn’t need to hear our order to know that we wanted. Desma was our waitress a couple of nights in the Castle View restaurant. She never seemed hurried and took the time to ensure we enjoyed our dining experience. By far, the best experience with a SLC employee was with Odane. He encountered us at the Lantern Pool early one morning. He explained that the bar had not opened yet and asked if he could get us something from the bar inside. It turned out he is not even wait staff, he is involved in entertainment. He was there early to prepare for activities later in the day but he took the time to make sure we were looked after and then took time to learn a bit about us and shared how he has come to be here in Barbados. We have seen him a number of times since and have seen him truly extending himself to make sure guests enjoy their stays. I must say this is the very first property we have been at where the GM could be found in the restaurant or walking the grounds. Even though he must be an incredibly busy person, he too was willing to take the time to mingle. The property as a whole is incredible. The landscaping, even though this is a new property, is incredibly lush and beautifully done. The layout of the resort is interesting, not just a big block of rooms. Each of the three pool areas have a different vibe. The food was terrific whether at the Mediterranean Market buffet, Sam Lords Grill (poolside) or the formal Castle View Restaurant, everything was of high quality with loads of selection. There is even a grab-and-go where you can find food to take with you while you go exploring the island. We left already planning our return.

Nice place, some deficiencies, but no “soul” yet…
I was pleased to stay at the Wyndham Grand Sam Lord’s Castle for a conference recently. I’ve long been aware of Sam Lord’s Castle, and have visited Barbados previously, but had never trekked across the island to visit. The hotel is nice. It’s stunning in appearance, but unlike many, many other resorts across the Caribbean and Mexico, it lacks a soul, or vibe, or culture. Honestly, it felt more like a luxurious corporate training center than a Caribbean resort and while I was glad to be there, it’s not the type of place I’d pick to host my wife and me for a getaway. What’s nice about the resort? It’s new, mostly clean, attractively decorated. Our banquet food and the food in the all-inclusive restaurant was very good. The meeting and banquet service was absolutely perfect, and service in the bars I visited was attentive. Most of all, the staff are super friendly at every position. What will eventually make this resort better? A personality! How can it get there? For one, there is nothing unique anywhere on property, nothing memorable, nothing instagramable. No morning water exercise class, no resort-facilitated water sports, no bar or restaurant space that reflects Barbados, or Sam Lord’s Castle. And there’s nothing to do within an easy walk or short drive of the resort. So once you’re there, you’re there, with only a couple of bars, three pools, and a so-so beach to occupy your time. Sam Lord’s Castle, with its rich and quirky history, sits abandoned and gutted adjacent to the property. There aren’t even any interpretative signs near it to explain its history in pirate culture, who owned it, what it became, when it burned, and anything else. There’s no reference to Sam Lord’s Castle in the resort’s public areas or in the rooms, which just seems odd since the resort incorporates it into its name. Each hotel or resort should have a personality, a culture, a story to tell…and this nice building has none of that. What else needs to be addressed? Directional signage is sorely lacking, and we all joked that by day three, we had a pretty good idea on how to get to our rooms and other areas. Daily housekeeping is very superficial – no floor cleaning, cursory attention to the bed, no replenishment of waters or nespresso pods unless requested, and mirrors and glass surfaces were all streaked as if someone used an oily cloth to clean them. Air conditioning is a problem – the staff told us that the AC units actually service two rooms each, so there’s no guarantee that your room thermostat will actually control your room temperature. My room stayed at a balmy 73 degrees the hole time, even though I’d set the thermostat lower, and the room stayed damp because of it. The bathroom amenities are upscale, but the towels are more Holiday Inn-ish in size and texture. They are thin and hard, which usually is a result of their being dried in way too high a temperature. One final tip – while the food there is good, you will have a truly memorable dinner if you venture a 10-minute drive away to Les Shack. Don’t let the ramshackle appearance fool you. The French and Italian couple who own and operate it have created what may be the best dining experience in Barbados! This will be a fine and memorable resort one day, once ownership and management find and cultivate its identity.
