We had a wonderful stay at Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful, and our room was lovely. We stayed near the quiet pool, which was perfect—peaceful, convenient, and with a partial ocean view. As Preferred Club guests, we especially enjoyed having breakfast most mornings at the restaurant by the quiet pool, which made starting the day so easy and relaxing. The food throughout the resort was very good, and the wait staff were always friendly, attentive, and accommodating. However, what truly makes this resort exceptional is the people. Everyone we encountered was incredibly kind and welcoming. A special shout-out to the shuttle drivers—Nelson, Ahmed, and Henry—who were not only super friendly but also joked around with us and made getting around the resort fun. We genuinely feel like we made new friends in Costa Rica. Another standout was William at the Preferred Club bar. He makes the best Old Fashioned my husband and our friends have ever had anywhere in the world—and that’s saying a lot. He is truly an artist. Ladies, don’t miss his French 75—beautiful and absolutely delicious. We had an amazing trip and would absolutely return. “Pura Vida” really is the best life, and Secrets Papagayo is a perfect place to experience it.

My husband and I stayed at the resort Dec. 2-5 and again Dec. 13-15 to be near the airport. The first segment was great. When we returned for two days before heading back to the U.S., we were treated like second-class citizens. We received neither a welcome drink nor a face towel upon arrival, and when I mentioned this "oversight" to the girl at the reception desk, she responded with a sarcastic, "Would you like a face towel?" Then, the last morning of our stay, we headed for breakfast at the small pool restaurant, which was closer to our room, and found it closed on Mondays. So we went to the buffet at the other end of the resort where we discovered a couple of near-raw bacon slices, no sausage, a bit of runny scrambled eggs, and some cold greasy hash browns. One would think the kitchen help could do a better job of keeping the trays full, especially at only 9:00 a.m., and especially on Mondays when one of the restaurants is closed. Finally, to cap things off on that Monday, we discovered our room key had been scrubbed at 11:50. Checkout isn't until noon. Fortunately, I was inside so I could let my husband in. On the plus side, our "Romantic Dinner" was great. Also, most of the staff was friendly and attentive.

Way below expectations
Very expensive, food choices are very limited, drinks are below the bottom shelf, no chairs or umbrellas on the beach. Limited seating around the pool. Be prepared to walk a lot of uneven stair steps.

A Chaotic Christmas
Pros: Great activities offered from cooking classes, yoga, to kayaking. A lot of positive servers. Beautiful clean beach. Nice clean pools. Good location. Cleaning team is great. Entertainment is lively. Cons: Initial room had no water pressure. Later worked in the evening. Next morning no water pressure they expected us to shower in a different room and come back and forth. Requested a new room, this one was right by the main pool with tons of noise. Watered down drinks, and I rarely drink alcohol. The bottles are watered down. Food is inconsistent one day it’s good the next day it’s bad. Overall food is ok if you’re hungry you’ll eat anything. Tons of sales pressure for member packages, a Christmas dinner that was the same as what was at the buffet. Sales pressure for wine and special tables. Lots of gossiping and snickering at the guest’s expense. Room service app malfunctioning and sent us completely different orders several times. Shuttle Service arrived over 30 minutes late and made us rush and stress to get our flight.

I would definitely go back!
Beautiful, serene, extraordinary experience. The options of pool or ocean and the variety of food options was great. The spa set up was so amazing. The entertainment was excellent. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The rooms were private with the best views. The options for excursions was plentiful.
