Extremely underwhelming
We expected more from a Hyatt brand property. The property is pretty but the facilities are not well maintained or cared for. Doors that do not close completely, one jacuzzi pool with cracked stucco and jets not working on one side, never got hot. The spa had a sauna, which also did not get hot due to a 2” gap in the door and doorframe. Holes in walls unpatched, uneven steps everywhere and few handrails. Beach is on the bay and the silt that washes up is black. No beach service and only a few lounge chairs that are up under the trees and too heavy to move to a flat sandy area. Plenty of bars and drinking for those who find that a priority. Staff is either not trained or simply can’t understand or doesn’t care. With the exception of a terrific bartender who was jack of all trades; William and a true professional server, Armando, at the Portofino restaurant, the remainder were unfriendly. The food was a gross disappointment after hearing that the Costa Rican food was superb, we were surprised at the lack of fresh fruit available, we were discouraged by staff from ordering “the catch of the day” and breakfast and lunch were worse than a buffet at Springhill Suites! Coffee was excellent, but took a VERY long time to make a basic cappuccino. All in all, we assume from this sub par experience that the Secrets brand is one to be avoided. It was NOT cheap. We’ve been to Hyatt Zillara Cap Cana two previous years and it’s a much better, quality, friendly, service oriented place with lovely staff. Not sure if Costa Rica is just a hot spot destination and people need a place to stay or if these guests have never truly experienced quality and excellence: neither are present at Secrets Costa Rica.

Exceptional customer service
my husband and I had a relaxing 6 day stay at Secrets Papagayo. The staff is beyond amazing! They are 100% of the reason why we give this resort 5 stars. Alison was a lot of fun! she kept us entertained with daily activities in and outside of the pool. Thannya and Jean Pier’s customer service is top notch. By far the best pool servers, always in such great spirits making sure we had our drinks at all times As for bartenders - Victor, Donald, Jose, and Andrea make the best drinks!! Restaurants - Himitsu and seaside grill were our favorites for dinner. During the day we would go see Geraldo at the grill by the pool and he would make us burgers, fries, nachos, wings, pizza whatever he made it was always delicious! every single employee that we interacted with at this resort was very friendly and willing to help. highly recommend!

Beautiful resort with superb staff!
We recently returned from a wonderful 5 day stay at Secrets Papagayo. For 3 days of our stay, 2 other family members were there with us. The highlight of our stay was the staff. From the day that we arrived, Miriam reached out to us to make sure that our experience was a positive one. Andreina had recently joined the Unlimited Vacation Club staff and was being mentored by Miriam. She was also friendly and helpful whenever we saw her. Although we've spoken with the UVC representatives on many occasions since we joined 14 years ago, this was the first time that anyone asked us for feedback about our experiences. Miriam and Andreina listened closely to our input. They also shared information on how to get the most out of our UVC membership which was helpful. Other staff who were particularly helpful to us were the concierge team members, specifically Joshua, Esteban, and Amed. They each went out of their way to make our stay a success. My husband has some mobility issues and they were all very responsive in helping him get where we wanted to go via golf cart with a minimum of walking. Prior to our stay, staff were also gracious in making sure our bungalow didn't have steps to climb to reach it. Frances, of the entertainment team, was enthusiastic and welcoming (despite my lack of interest in the pool sports activity). Our waiters at Portofino and the Japanese restaurant were also top notch though, regrettably, I forgot to write down their names. All the staff we encountered in the resort were very friendly and helpful. Also, although all spoke English, they were very polite in letting me practice my mediocre Spanish. Because of my husband's mobility issues, we didn't go on any excursions however I did go snorkeling with my own snorkeling equipment just off the beach. The first day I didn't see anything but the second day, after getting advice from staff to go further to the left (when looking at the water from the resort), many different types of fish were visible! (If you do go in the water near the rocks, be cautious for sea urchins with their long spines.) We also enjoyed relaxing by the pool and the views from our back patio. Our favorite restaurant was Aqua due to its nice breakfasts, food options, and unhurried feel. We also liked Portofino very much (and ate there twice) and Himitsu. We didn't do the Teppanyaki but had very good sushi and other dishes. The market cafe also has a nice variety of options. Drink options were good and the house wine was excellent. Compared to the many other Secrets and Dreams where we've stayed as UVC members, Secrets Papagayo is smaller and so has fewer dining options but a less hectic atmosphere. The hilly location was another big difference and the rooms and bungalows were much further apart. This gave a more peaceful feeling but also meant that shuttles were typically needed to travel to the pools and restaurants. In general, the shuttles came pretty quickly though, so this wasn't a big issue. The gift shop had the usual selection of resort items but also had some nice reasonably priced carved wooden items, which we liked. Housekeeping and minibar services were good and responsive. We were at first confused about why fresh towels were left on our back patio but then we realized that we'd accidentally pressed the "do not disturb" button while looking for the light switch. The short distance to the Liberia airport was another plus and made it easy to reach the resort. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay, made special by the Secrets Papagayo staff!
