    "TOTALLY SHOCKED"

We arrived at the hotel circa 7pm in the evening after a long journey from the UK & found the room was very dark even with all of the internal lighting on, we had to use a torch to locate articles in the bottom of the wardrobe. When we woke in the morning there was no natural light in the room or the balcony, our room was a Junior Swim up Suite & once again we had to use all the internal lighting, the problem being across the small swim up pool was jungle which obliterated all natural light & sunlight. We contacted reception & asked if we could change rooms & they said that we could at a cost of US$ 6,000 for the remaining 13 nights we were shocked & decided this was too much having paid £8,500 for our 14 night stay. There were a lot of pluses for the hotel & we did eventually enjoy our stay the major asset to the hotel without a doubt are the staff providing excellent service. The food was very good especially in the French & Japanese restaurants where the staff once again excelled & also a mention for The Rendezvous Bar providing good service. Just to mention we were offered a room exchange free of charge for our final 3 nights but decided we didn't want the upheaval before departing & we were also granted a late checkout free of charge.

    Great vacation experience!

Wonderful resort! Staff was attentive and courteous. Concierge was helpful and made things happen when we asked. Room was spacious and very elegant. Looking forward to our next vacation there soon. My wife and I wished we could have stayed longer.

    Could be so much better

Stayed for a week over Thanksgiving and experienced some positives and many negatives. My overall perception after our stay is that hotel management is focused on the wrong things - small, meaningless niceties rather than maintenance, sufficient resources, and consistent service. First, the property is lovely - a very green jungle-type environment with three pools and a very nice beach. We were easily able to see various fish, a stingray, a turtle, etc. when snorkeling in front of the hotel. Overall food was enjoyable and exceeded our expectations. Highlights included the lamb at the French restaurant, the food and service at the Mexican restaurant, the breakfast buffet, and the teppanyaki dinner. There was also a poolside barbecue one day that was very good. The quiet/relaxation pool was also very nice with excellent service and a much quieter environment than at the main pools. Many of the staff went out of their way to be helpful and the restaurant staff in particular were great. We had a couples massage at the spa and used the hydrotherapy circuit - both were excellent. The spa facilities were very nice and the massage was among the best I have had anywhere. The hotel overall was much quieter than the other Secrets we had been to and we were not disturbed by nightly entertainment in our room. It felt like much less of a party atmosphere than Cap Cana. However, there were a number of things I think should be improved upon. When we first arrived after a long day of travel, we were immediately subjected to intense upsell. We were asked repeatedly at check-in to upgrade our room and had to refuse more than once. Then we had to sit in the lobby for at least 20 minutes with another staff member who was trying to sell us on attending a timeshare/vacation club presentation. I was very tired and hungry and felt like I had to be quite rude to get out of the sales pitch, which didn't start things well. I said no repeatedly and was met with, you have to eat breakfast anyway, so why not listen to a presentation while you eat? I was also told that he only needed one more couple to meet his quota. I expected to have to deal with this, but it's irritating that it happens immediately upon arrival when people are worn out. Upon arriving at our room, I noted that the toilet was running repeatedly and asked for it to be fixed. When maintenance arrived, he needed to get a part and work on it, so we left to try and get dinner (after a full day of travel and no opportunity yet to eat or use the bathroom). We were told there was a 45-minute wait at the Italian restaurant but were ultimately able to go to a seafood restaurant that had no wait. On the second day, after a full day of swimming, we showered to get ready to go to dinner and I realized the hair dryer didn't work. We called the front desk and they said they'd send another in 10 minutes. After waiting for more than half an hour, I went to dinner with wet hair. Upon trying to dry my hair the next day, I realized that the issue was not the hair dryer, but actually that the electrical outlets in the bathroom did not work. So we had to call maintenance again to work on the room. The bathroom sink was also not draining so I had to get that fixed. All in all, I felt like I was doing the staff's work for them by ensuring the property was maintained. It seems there should be a process to check that things in the room actually work so guests don't need to encounter issues. The cleaning staff spends energy on tying ribbons around toilet paper and unplugging my iPhone charger and wrapping it in a coil. I find these niceties unnecessary and somewhat irritating. It would be preferable for them to spend time ensuring all items in the room were functional. Another issue is that there do not seem to be sufficient chaise lounges to accommodate all guests. In order to sit on the beach or at the pool, guests had to go down early in the morning to reserve chairs for the day. One day when my husband went down at 8:30 am, we got one of the last spots at the third pool since the beach and first two pools were full already. When asking about getting chairs, one staff member just shrugged and said maybe people would leave. We had a swim-out king on the ground floor with access to a pool, which was a very nice perk. However, the floor on the patio in front of the pool was made of marble (or some similar slippery material). I noticed on the first day that there was water puddling, but forgot about it. Later in the week, when I went out the back door, I slipped in a puddle of water and fell hard. I was very lucky that nothing really serious occurred, but it was a painful and startling fall. I think what happened was that the warm, humid air outside hit the glass door to the room that was cold from air conditioning and created condensation that ran down to the ground. My husband went to get some ice for my leg after the fall and that resulted in first aid staff coming to the room (which I didn't really want). After being looked at by the staff member, he commented "no mas tequila" and winked at my husband. I would note that I had had no alcohol at all and was very disappointed in this comment. My fall was entirely due to poor maintenance of the property by the hotel and was no fault of my own. Further, I don't believe it appropriate for a care provider to speak in this fashion. After speaking to the concierge, we received mats for the back patio. Again, this is something that should have been done proactively, not reactively. With respect to the concierge, I did not find ours helpful beyond addressing the issues discussed above. One thing we had really wanted was to join a hotel tour to swim with the turtles. We asked about it on the first day, were told they would get back to us, and never heard anything again. As a final note, the room and its furniture was fine, but generally could use cleaning and an upgrade. While I appreciate that this is a beach property where guests will be draping wet swimwear and tracking in sand, it still could have been better maintained. I took a quick photo of the desk chair in our room to demonstrate the dirtiness of some of the furniture. I had been to a Secrets once before and there are some aspects of it I like when I am in need of an easy package vacation. However, there were enough issues this time that I think we'll try somewhere else next time we want to go to the beach.

    Great experience

Great experience . Everything was wonderful. I would definitely visit again if the opportunity presents itself. The customer service was really good and we had a great time in Mexico at the resort. We got to see the sea turtles and live performances .

    Great stay at Secrets Akumal

Had a great stay at Secrets Akumal. This was our 4 time at an all inclusive resort in Riviera Maya and this was our favorite. The resort is in perfect condition and hotel staff takes great care of it. It feels like a jungle with all the lush foliage. Our concierge was ARACELI in building 6 (prefered club) and she was fantastic. Cruz our pool waiter and Antonio concierge by the pool catered to our every need. Spa was very nice to unwind. Overall the service at this resort is top notch and your will not be disappointed.
