Worth 4 stars for these reasons...

We stayed at this location for 4 nights/ 5 days. The rooms are nicely decorated and roomy for suitcases; however, the beds are full-size, not queens. The staff was friendly and provided good service, especially when cleaning the rooms and delivering items to the room. While sitting at the bar, I noticed that the bald bartender (didn't catch his name) directed his attention to a man who flashed a stack of money and was buying drinks for his group of ladies. He ignored the other patrons sitting at the bar until he had serviced the "rich" man. I guess his tip received from the "rich" man would be more than the other patrons collectively. At least, I hope it was. The casino was fun, but the hotel won my money. :). At least, the free cocktails and food soften the blow of losing my money. The pool is very shallow with the pool bar. I was disappointed because I thought this was the "adult" pool and the water level would be 4 or 5 feet at least. The pool was about 2 feet deep! The bartenders at the pool bar were friendly and attentive. They serve really good drinks if you're friendly with them. :) The beach was fantastic and clean. The sea was somewhat lukewarm and full of waves. We were warned to be mindful of the dangerous riptides that have drowned people in the past. The hotel is within the vicinity of nearby restaurants that offer better meals than the mediocre food at the hotel. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but will probably check out the Sheraton hotel on the next visit to San Juan.

    Awesome hotel

Just did a stay at the Marriott Stellaris Resort and Casino in Puerto Rico. It was a points stay, so I booked a city view room. I was so surprised and happy that they upgraded us to an Oceanfront Corner Room!!!! This is probably my best upgrade to date. We had two balconies, one Oceanfront and one pool view/Oceanview. The staff there were all very welcoming and friendly. The housekeeping staff tried everyday to service the room, but we only wanted supplies. The location is nice...we drive, but if you had to walk, there are lots of restaurants and bars nearby. Bonvoy members get a discount on parking which was nice. There was a $65 per day resort fee, which included things like yoga class, salsa class, bicycle use, and aqua aerobics. We didn't participate, but watched the classes from our balcony 😂. They have a smallish, but decent gym and a laundry which I never found. Platinum and above get buffet breakfast with a cooked to order egg station and unlimited mimosas. Our only issues and for us they are big, were that the air conditioner control had a note on it saying that it only went to 67 degrees...and it did, then it would turn off in the middle of the night and we'd wake up sweating. The other thing was the mattress...hard as a rock and I am a person who likes a firm mattress. If in the area I still would stay here again and just go buy an egg crate for the mattress and a fan that I would just leave. Hopefully they will replace the mattresses soon, but I doubt the thermostat will change. All things considered, we really enjoyed the stay here.

Good value, great location but inconsistent service

This is a tough review to write, because some things about the San Juan Marriott were wonderful. Certainly almost all of the staff there were personable and helpful and we enjoyed interacting with them. The issue was that hotel and pool staff did their jobs well ... for a while. Then they would, inexplicably, stop - or simply disappear. First a caveat: We use points for hotel stays and have been able to enjoy vacations at the higher-end Marriott hotel brand at multiple Caribbean islands. That brand's hotel in Puerto Rico has still not reopened after suffering damage in Hurricane Maria, so we chose the San Juan Marriott and were wondering how it might be different. The good news? The SJM offers beautiful grounds, nice rooms and, in our opinion, is a better value given its prices and policies are more sensible than the higher brand. For instance, our ocean view room unexpectedly included a full-length couch in the corner, which was great for extra seating and even sleeping. Another example: At the SJM, you can grab pool towels on your own and grab seats wherever you like, without having to have pool staff show you to the chairs to "set up" (and get a tip). We were able to sit in the same four chairs every day we were at the pool because at 7:30 am the pool was almost empty and there was no rush (and line) to get chairs. Also good? The pool restaurant makes great food. We ate a lot of it. They also make fine smoothies, though weirdly they are not on the menu. They need to add them. Finally, the weird way Marriott charges for hotel amenities is still in force, but what you pay each day at the SJM is far less than what you would pay at the higher brand. One tip, get an ocean view room higher up in the Cabana tower. The sound of the waves is wonderfully loud, the view is tremendous and you are further away from the noise below you at night on the hotel's grounds. They also offer some fun pool activities like aqua aerobics, yoga and some games for kids, all free. We enjoyed them. Housekeeping was quick and efficient and did a nice job. Our first few days they came quite early in the day, before noon, which was a pleasant surprise after experiencing at many hotels 3-4 p.m. room cleanings when we had just returned from a day outside. We used the SJM spa for massages and enjoyed them. Perfectly adequate, but not exceptional. The hotel spa is wedged into a very small space just off the exercise room, and people coming and going don't have room to sit and relax. The bad, or maybe odd: Time and again, we would witness hotel employees providing excellent service at first - and then they would disappear. We rented a pool cabana and the two ladies who helped us set up for wonderful and very attentive. They came by 2-3 times in the first hour, and even comped some snacks because of some confusing details we were told about cabana service. Then they were gone, never to be seen again, though we had the cabana from 9-5. We were supposed to have a personal pool bar attendant taking care of us due to the cabana, and he indeed stopped by 3 times in the first hour. Then he, too, disappeared. When we wanted to order lunch at about 1 p.m., I had to get up and walk to the pool bar because no pool service people were visible within 100 yards and our guy was not in sight (we never did see him again). This would happen over and over. The friendly pool area security guards would come by and tell rude guests who had brought portable speakers and were blasting their own music to turn them off (on one Friday, we witnessed the ridiculous spectacle of two different groups of people, sitting literally less than 12 inches apart on pool chairs next to the water, BOTH playing their own speakers with completely different music while ignoring each other - it was a wall of noise and unbelievably selfish). But around noon, the security guards would stop doing that. They were visible. They just didn't tell anyone to turn off their speakers anymore. Same with smoking/vaping, which was prohibited at the pool. Same with tossing a ball across a busy pool, also annoying as the people doing it would inevitably throw poor passes and come close to hitting others. It's like as the day went on, the hotel staff gave up. Some days pool service would pick up our empty food trays after we had finished eating. Other days, no one would, and they would sit in the sun for hours until we left (they came in circular, hard containers we could not throw away). Keep those containers covered, or you will be smarmed by birds. BTW, all of this also applied to the beach, though overall it was less policed generally than the pool. You *do* have to use the hotel's beach service to get chairs and claim a spot under umbrellas. A word about the beach: The water is warm and the darker green of the Atlantic, with good-sized waves. It also had bits of seaweed floating everywhere on top of and in the water. Not a big problem, but not nearly as nice as the almost clear, blue waters of Caribbean Islands (Puerto Rico has nicer beaches to the west, we did not go there). A few additional points: People seem to smoke pot everywhere in Puerto Rico. It isn't overwhelming, just very frequent. Even at the pool we often smelled it as the wind would bring the odor from outside the pool and/or on the adjacent beach. There are many, many restaurants around the hotel, all within easy walking distance. Some are upscale, some are neighborhood haunts. We didn't have a bad meal. The only hotel restaurant we used was the pool bar. About halfway through our stay, the "down" elevator light on our floor stopped working. We figured out you could press "up" to get an elevator, which was a minor issue. But the buttons were never fixed while we were there. Virtually every night, around 3 a.m., there was some sort of loud noise going on within or very near the hotel. One night it was a drunk woman shouting and banking on a metal pool. Another night was an annoying car, revving its engine over and over. Another night was sounded like metal pipes rolling around on the floor above us. We were on the 8th floor, just one below the top floor, and these noises easily reached us and woke us up even with the surf noise. Weekends are a different animal at the hotel. Much busier, with rowdier guests and all that crowd brings. The SJM skews younger than that higher end Marriott brand, so it is already pretty lively. One afternoon a relatively sedate pool crowd was suddenly invaded by a couple of dozen people wearing green wrist bands who were much louder and quickly got drunk (or arrived drunk). Turned out they were cruise passengers who disembarked in San Juan and for some reason chose to go to another pool. The SJM shouldn't allow this. It's disrespectful to their paying and brand-loyal guests. Weirdly, after a week of silence, the front desk called us on our very last day to ask us if there was anything they could do to make our stay more enjoyable. Odd timing. We loved our stay at the SJM and found it to be a good value. It seems like the property is trying to "stretch up" to fill the void left by the still closed higher-end brand. But while they know what to do, they aren't consistent. The end result is a great stay, at a wonderful property, but a lot of dropped balls.

    FABULOUS!

My husband and I went to the San Juan Marriott Resort for our 30th anniversary and we had a fabulous time! From start to finish, the staff was absolutely wonderful! They were so nice, friendly, and attentive and they really made us feel important. They were everything you'd want when you are on vacation. The resort was beautiful and our vie was breathtaking. I highly recommend this resort if you plan to go to Puerto Rico!

This Marriott (Puerto Rico) is amazing!

I highly recommend staying here! It was absolutely gorgeous! Everything was clean and fresh, every member of the staff from the valets, to the front desk, to the house cleaning staff, were absolutely attentive, very kind and willing to help in any way they could. This Marriott was exceptionally clean and inviting inside and out and as I said, I highly recommend staying here. You will no doubt, have a divine experience as we did!
