Dec 26, 2025Royalton Splash Cancun Misses the Mark
I have stayed at several Royalton resorts, including Royalton Splash and Royalton Bavaro in the Dominican Republic, and I always upgrade to Diamond Club. Based on those experiences, I thought I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, Royalton Splash Cancun fell well short of those expectations. The Diamond Club upgrade is not worth the extra cost at this resort. There are designated Diamond Club areas, but no one checks or enforces them. The food and service are the same throughout the resort, regardless of upgrade. One of the most frustrating parts of the stay was the constant lack of seating. You had to get up very early every morning just to make sure you could secure pool chairs for the day. This quickly became exhausting and took away from the idea of a relaxing vacation. The food was one of the biggest disappointments. At Royalton Splash in the Dominican Republic, I would rate the food a 3 out of 5. In Cancun, it was a 2 out of 5 at best. Restaurant service was extremely slow. We would sit down, place our order, and then wait close to an hour for food to arrive. Dinner regularly took two hours or more from start to finish. When the food finally came out, it was often cold, portions were small, and the quality was poor. Much of it was barely edible. My 14-year-old son actually lost weight during the trip because he struggled to find food he wanted to eat. The drinks were also disappointing. Options were very limited, and if you did not want a frozen, sugary drink, you were basically out of luck. There was no light beer available, and many of the drinks tasted watered down. We were entitled to spa resort credits, but no one mentioned this to us during our stay. Compared to the Dominican Republic, Diamond Club benefits in Cancun are extremely limited. In the DR, Diamond Club guests receive unlimited hydrotherapy and access to surrounding Royalton properties. In Cancun, you get one hydrotherapy session only and no access to other resorts. I will say the hydrotherapy itself in Cancun was better than the one in the DR, but that was one of the few positives. Resort activities were lacking. During the day, it felt like the only activity offered was volleyball. There were no teen activities and no teen club, which was disappointing since we were traveling with a teenager. Fitness activities were poorly organized. Yoga times changed without notice, and aqua aerobics started late every day. Evenings were especially dull. There was very limited nighttime entertainment, the pools closed early, and once they closed, there was really nothing left to do. The beach was another letdown. The water was murky and dirty-looking, and no one in my family went into the ocean. It was not the clear, beautiful Cancun beach experience we were expecting. I do want to acknowledge that the bartenders, waitstaff, and housekeeping staff were friendly and worked hard. However, the resort is clearly understaffed, which affects service and the overall experience. After staying at other Royalton properties, I can honestly say this resort does not meet expectations. Save your money and choose a different resort.

Worst trip ever
This was a Christmas gift to our kids. The problems began when we got off the plane and the transfer service had a pick up for 2 instead of 4. We waited almost an hour before they finally decided it was ok to take all of us. We got to the resort at 3:45 (check in began at 3) and our room was not ready due to maintenance issues. The lady checking us in says go eat and it’ll be ready once you are done. None of the restaurants opened until 6 except for a food truck which was shutting down as we walked up and a sports bar that was full so we couldn’t be seated. We finally get to our room and the app and the tv would not work so I had to deal with getting those fixed to be able to make restaurant reservations or view anything. You have to have reservations to eat dinner except for the buffet. There are 0 hot tubs unless you upgrade to the diamond package and they have use of 4. Night 3 around 6pm our ceiling began to leak. I’m sure that was the initial maintenance issue. It was the ac unit so they temporarily stopped the leak and spackled over wet drywall so at 2am we had 3 leaks from the ceiling. I asked if we could move rooms and sleep for the night and move all of our belongings the next day and was told in order to move I’d have to pack up right then. Again they stopped the leak and came back the next morning to patch over it. We decided to chance having another break through instead of moving. We only had 1 more night there. The beach was the dirtiest beach I have ever seen. Trash floating in all over the place. We even saw a hypodermic needle washed up. 2 days before the transfer service sends a pick up email for 2:30. Our flight was at 4 and we were 30 mins from the airport. Here I go again spending more time on vacation with my kids to get my time moved up. You have to send your flight info and I had entered it 3 Months before. Finally after telling me they were gonna charge me they moved my time to noon. This was not my first all inclusive but definitely the worst. I will never use Royalton again nor will I be back to Cancun.

Edgar the butler went above and beyond!
Edgar made our trip to the Royalton Splash exponentially better than it would have been had he not been there. We spent almost a week enjoying the resort and every day, Edgar and Francisco were eager to help us with our needs. In fact, Edgar went above and beyond and was able to help us (and our whole group we were traveling with) more than any other butler. He was able to get us reservations quickly and helped us with our airport transfers as well as an unexpected sickness. The trip wouldn’t have gotten 5 stars with Edgar! Maria did a great job cleaning our room and Addy was INCREDIBLE at the spa, she is very strong but gentle - the perfect combination for relaxation. We also were helped by Victor and many occasions and were thankful for him too! We wished there would have been more non-buffet options for breakfast and lunch but enjoyed the beach dinner on our last night which made up for it!
