Riu Macao Punta Cana is terrible
This was our 5th year traveling to Riu. Previous years we were at Tropical Bay in jamiaca. Jamaica was great. Riu in Punta Cana is not good. Buffet food was poor, HUGE language issues- most staff could not understand English, improperly mixed drinks, burger at pool were hard as hockey pucks, when tried calling they hung up on several of us, Riu point system is terrible, airport transfer company-Destination Services - is also terrible-cannot speak to anyone on phone and in person representative did nothing to help. Overall never returning to Riu Macao Punta Cana . Resort was very clean as we have found other Riu properties.

Avoid
If you’re a foodie avoid at all costs the food is awful at best but I prefer diabolical for a supposedly 5* resort. We’re here at the moment and apart from the weather really wish we weren’t! The food is left out until completely dried out or the dish is empty which really doesn’t happen. The beach and pool area are fine but I would try another hotel that shares the beach and avoid the Macao at all costs!

Nice but not 5 star
Upon check in everyone around us had been given welcome drinks but we weren't offered anything. The associate verified our information and handed us (2ppl) 2 room keys and 1 towel card (we were able to talk the towel guy in to giving us a 2nd towel) and told us to look at the app for everything hotel related. She didn't even direct us as to where to find our room, I had to ask, where do we go. The room and property were very clean however, if you're used to towels in cute shapes on your bed everyday you won't find it here. Most days they fanned out my PJ's like a bow in the middle of the bed. There was no bedspread, only a sheet. I found a cheap blanket in the closet we were able to use. The food was probably the most disappointing part of the vacation. They rate this as a 5 star resort but I would give the food 2/3 stars at best and the selection was terrible. We did visit the Riu Bravo right next door for lunch, the food was much better, and they had way more to offer however, you are only welcome during the day and stuck with the sub-par dinners. The RIU parties were conveniently located to this property, others had to take a bus but it was only a 5min walk. We were looking for a quiet, low key, relaxing vacation and that's what this property was. The pools were chill (even the one with the swim up bar). The entertainment staff did their best to get people involved in activities and were very up beat. If you're looking for something a bit more lively/loud the swim up bar pool next door (which you can use) offered that. Across the board, there was a very strong language barrier, asking questions about anything was a struggle. Also, something I have never experienced before was there is no store on property. I don't know what you would do if you forgot something but literally, no where to buy anything, even sun screen.

A Return Visit
This was our second visit to the Macao, the first being some 11 years before. It was nice to see what had been done during the refurbishment, and we are glad to say that it has been a marked improvement. The rooms are much better, gone are the purple and white tones to be replaced by beige and light greens. The choice of restaurants has increased with the Italian and the Steakhouse offerings being really good. But Riu ' What has gone wrong with the orange juice at breakfast?' it's like water and tastes of nothing. Our other gripe was, that the Cubana bar and the Sports bar are too cold, the AC makes it so you can't sit very long in either. We came here for the warm weather so don't wish to sit shivering in a bar. Joe's bar with no AC was perfect. All in all a good holiday.

Fab hotel
This is probably the best hotel I have stayed at and my 3rd Riu palace. Fantastic from start to finish, all staff are exceptional and friendly, we haven’t had anything other than great service here. The grounds are fabulous, really nice fresh, classy decor and spotlessly clean. We arrived to being told they had run out of our room type- standard so we got a free upgrade. The room was lovely, clean and spacious, with a proper king bed, large bathroom with rain shower and a massive balcony. My only niggle would be that they were mowing the lawn outside our room at 7.30am. The hotel leads onto the beach and wow what a beach it is with palm trees, white fluffy sand and warm clear sea. Would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to be back soon.
