    Great Location let down by terrible facilities, awful process and disgusting food

    We could not have been more disappointed with our stay. The location, pools and beach are the only things that go in favor of the Palace Bavaro. Want to eat at the speciality restaurants? Don't bother, you can't reserve a table just use an hour so of your time lining up on the off chance you might get a table. When you do - be prepared for utter disappointment. Frozen pre-prepped rubbish badly cooked and presented. Limited menus, terrible quality. Specific disappointments include the Japanese and Steakhouse - I've had better food from the buffet at my local grocery store. The website advertises kids club and a full activity program - nope. Rooms - falling apart and smelly. Evening entertainment - turned up so loud the speakers are distorting. Management - clearly know they're not delivering to even close to a 5* standard but have zero authority to offer any discount or credit for the terrible offering. Overall - don't bother. Ever.

    Spring Break with the family

    It took me a minute to think about our recent vacation here. More positive's then negatives came from it. First and foremost very beautiful resort and the KINDESS employee's ever. Upon our arrival, check in was pretty slow, but if that is the worse thing I can think of, then so be it. They did not move with blazing speed, but still made it happen. Our luggage was taken to our room, but the resort. Which is very nice. Bring extra cash for tipping BTW. You'll appreciate it. Now onto the best part the food. The food was excellent in Geisha, Taino and both buffet's. But remember to each their own, everyone's taste is totally different. In the steakhouse you get a salad and some mini crab cake. My family is from the crab cake capitol of the world, we knew they were not real crab cakes, but they were not that bad either. I will say, the worse food they have to offer, is snack time before or after dinner. I was so hungry and tried a hot dog in the sports bar, and almost threw it up. It was so mushy, I had to throw it away. Yes, not the bun, the hot dog. Zero ketchup or mustard around. Thank god the buffet saved us. Montecristo is the main buffet, with tons and tons of options to choose from. Taino has buffet for lunch, which was very good also. If you have kids, prepare to see lots of ice cream from Capuchino in the lobby. It's a little cafe in the lobby that serves coffee, pastries, and ice cream of course. My youngest tore all of their ice cream up every day. My oldest ordered room service everyday and fell in love with their club and cheesecake. I know people complained about the food, but in all honesty, it was not that bad. I've had a lot worse back in the states. One thing people have realize you are not going to get gourmet food in a different country, especially at a resort feeding 300-500 people. I'd give the food a thumbs up. Bit of advice if you are reading this. Double check with the front desk, they said we needed reservations and long pants. I asked the front desk, no reservation and no long pants. The older I get the more and more I want to be in bed by 8. Or in this case, the heat and the sun sucked it out of ya. At night time they had activities on the stage with live music, dj's and some kids sing a long and games. Wasn't too much of a night owl on this trip. Check on the digital board or download the app to your phone to check on the daily activities. Plenty going on all day, my youngest son played sand soccer on the beach, he loved it. The pool had water aerobics, which was cool to watch. Now the next part is a must read and be careful part. We ventured over to the Riu strip stores which is all the way over at Riu Bambo. It's a long walk if you are staying here, especially in the heat. The signs are very misleading. If you make a visit to those stores, prepared to be hustled and to be hustled for a lot of money. Of course nothing has pricing, Just be careful and do not except anything you do not want, they will hustle you. Be extra cautious to not use your credit card, nothing happen to me, but we were warned. We did not make it over to the water slides, because the beach was so nice, with super soft sand and warm clear water. Yes the seaweed was picked up every morning, by the resort. Advice for the pool, claim you spots after breakfast right away, they say you are not allowed to reserve spots, but everyone did. Ton's of shade on the beach and the pool. This was our second time to the DR, first time with kids. Youngest loved it, oldest is a teenage, so you can only imagine. Yes, I was skeptical at first because of the reviews, but you can not believe everything everyone says. No noise complaints from the construction and our rooms were right next to it. No complaints about the food or our room. Never had a problem with any of the service or employee's, maybe because my Spanish game was on that week. No I do not speak it fluently, but know enough to get me by. All in all I would rate this resort a 4-1/2 star. Not everything you read in the reviews are true. I would highly recommend this resort. Hopefully this will help with your decision.

    Rude staff and mediocre food.

    This hotel is in need of an update, but the biggest problem here is the staff. We have experienced rude treatment by multiple staff members, and tonight were cursed at by two waitresses in the buffet restaurant, where we made the mistake of eating on our final night at the hotel. Since I speak some rudimentary Spanish, they cursed at the wrong person. They appeared angry that we had the audacity to come after 9:30pm even though the restaurant is listed to be open until 10pm. That's not actually accurate as all the food was broken down and taken away at 9:50pm. We also ate in three of the a la carte restaurants, and they were disappointing as well. The salad bar in the Italian restaurant had food that was not even close to fresh. The ravioli was also close to inedible. Similarly in the steak restaurant, if you ordered the filet mignon, it was poorly prepared. We at one point had our minibar refilled, and the staff member who came to take care of that appeared annoyed that he had to do his job. If you stay here (we won't ever again) be prepared to be disappointed. The beach is OK however the hotel staff does not adequately clean up the seaweed that washes up on the beach, unlike the resort we stayed in Aruba. There are an endless stream of vendors on the beach, and they are all licensed by the hotel. Some will leave when you say no but others are not so easily deterred. The resort has a water park that is best described as being in rustic condition. Strangely, they are expanding the resort. Be careful in what room you stay. We did not have this issue, but the rooms facing the construction got to hear construction noise into the night as some work is performed after dark using lights. In summary, the food here is terrible, the wait staff has rude and unprofessional employees, and it helps to know some Spanish as most of the staff speaks little to no English. We will never return here, and RIU should really overhaul the staff here. We've stayed in other RIU hotels and none were bad like this one is. Frankly, the only reason I gave this hotel one star is that no zero star option is available.

    Best beach with the worst restaurant management

    The best beach with the worst restaurants service The hotel is nice quite dated, have some issues, were resolved but the restaurant organization couldn’t be WORST. You can reserve by 6.01 all restaurants are fully book. We had to wait for second turn and lucky the manager give us a side table 7.30 second turn sit us they give us a salad 20.45 still waiting for the main course. All restaurants are with people waiting outside for a sit. Avoid the hotel

    Worst ever; please read before booking;

    Not a best place to stay in this RIU facility. Day 1st experience: missing towels, locker was not working, refrigerator was not working and elevator was not working. Locker only can set up after 5 PM, so if you can come before 5 PM need to wait to open locker and need to available in your room. Day 2nd: learn new things, didn’t provided card for towel during check up and finally after end of the day reach to room keys were not working. Went to front desk after walking about 1 KM, reset the keys and sent technician to check lock. Give us some recommendations such as not keep with mobile phone and credit card. Even though it wasn’t, I think may be we made a mistake. Day 3rd: requested laundry bags, water bottles, and shower caps. It is show up bay crib in rooms and again keys were not workings. Made a complained that now what can be done this is happening every 24 hrs after the keys were reset even not near to phone and wallet. Day 4th: review is coming
