Just returned after a week at this property. We have been staying at riu for over 15 years worst experience ever! To begin as unpacked yesterday opened a Kay jewelry box I had a precious necklace and earring set in I never removed from the box to find it empty I had forgotten to put it in safe and one of the workers helped them self to it! What kind of major hotel chain employs thieves as their employees they have not heard the end of that one! We spent most of the week with travel diarrhea never hungry or thirsty could be the fact the VIP area we stayed absolutely filthy swim up bar bathrooms one was out of service all week other had vomit on floor never cleaned and never saw any cleaning persons there! Swim up bar had container full of our dirty glasses never looked properly washed just soaked in everyone’s germs it’s no wonder we got sick! Oh and service horrible bartenders were never on swim up side of the bar you either had to yell to them or get out and go to other side to get service! We tried other swim up bar water filthy appears pool filter didn’t work! Jungle party a drunken mess seems they cater to younger crowd! I will definitely not return to this property and probably not RIU at all unless changes are made!
Not a 5 star and not for families.
When booking this for our honeymoon I was a bit unsure due to all the negative review but as I had been to a RIU hotel a few times I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Well I wish I hadn’t entertainment I can’t explain to you how non existent it was and if there was an odd day of kids club in the day time it was only catered really for toddlers, the amount of children between 5-12 that walked out daily within the 1st 5 minutes just shows you how poor there set up is. The night time entertainment music was fine for my 5 year old but after that they had live music most nights which to be honest with you was very poor and In different languages . Out of the 14 nights stayed here I would only say there was 2 nights decent entertainment. During one film night the film got cut short to focus on the RIU party’s which you can understand would have been very frustrating seen as the entertainment hadn’t been up to 5 star standard and it was actually nice for us as a family to watch together. Any parties that was going on was for adults only, you would think being a ‘family hotel’ they would do something special for family’s a few times a week. When the RIU parties were on during the day you didn’t see any entertainment staff. Food was very repetitive I get that it is buffet style but they could have mixed it up a bit. The beach was full of sea weed so we couldn’t even spend days down there, there was a few days the beach got tided of this but then again this stopped. Pool area very slippery when dry so you need to be extra careful Tipping is a big part in this hotel, you have to tip to get anything what you want. I couldn’t fault the maid they were brilliant
Overall VERY NICE
We had a group of 10. We we supposed to have 5 rooms together on the main floor including one handicap room. It didn't play out that way...four of the rooms were on the top floor at the furthest possible point away from our parents in the handicap room. There's only two elevators in the hotel, of course the one closest to our room was not working. My wife reported it on the first day, second day, and by the third day they agreed to have all of us moved to the ground floor which I thought was nice. Our first trip to Punta Cana, but not our first RIU. Beach: Absolutely beautiful, some seaweed, but attended to every couple of days. Hotel: Older, style was a bit too much "Las Vegas" and not tropical enough in our opinion...clean and well kept. Food: Didn't experiment too much, did the Steakhouse twice, which was great. Enjoyed the buffet every other night...Very repetitive, but an over all large selection of food. Service: No issues whatsoever, room was clean every day, waiters and bar staff were efficient and friendly, we're not "big tippers" so I didn't expect the golden glove treatment. Entertainment: New Years Eve was disappointing, no fireworks or anything special. We attended all seven and quite enjoyed them. TIP: It's NOT the real Michael Jackson just in case you were hoping. Water Park/RIU Party Place: Fun, I attended both a few times, but really too old for that stuff. Disappointments: PEPSI establishment not Coke ! No washrooms close to the pool bar or beach. The whole "saving chairs by the pool thing" We found out that by tipping the pool boys, they will put towels on chairs for you....so even arriving at 8 am, most chairs were "taken" and some sat like that until 1-2 pm ???? When it rained in the morning ALL those towels got went, people came a swapped them for dry towels so eventually there were no towels left. OVERALL....very happy with our experience. We are not the type to rush back to the same place, but we certainly knew what to expect from a RIU, it wasn't the best we've been too, but it certainly wasn't terrible. I would love to go to Punta Cana again, but the world is a big place !
Riu Palace Bavaro review January 2023
We just got back from our stay Jan 15-22. Reading reviews helped me in choosing this resort and what other people’s experiences were. Here is my review of our week and I hope this also helps you too! Room - Stayed in VIP Junior suite jacuzzi room. Never ended up using the jacuzzi. Just never got around to it. Room was in decent condition. Can tell it is in need of an update. Excellent water pressure and always had hot water. Air conditioner worked great. Almost too great and had to turn it right down and use the extra blanket in the closet for sleeping. But, I’d rather be too cool than hot overnight. We brought damprid with us. After a week it collected just over an inch of water. Our room didn’t seem to have a musty smell. But once I took our clothes out at home, I could smell it. Not a big deal though. The plugs are standard normal ones. However, we had to use the pop bottles from the fridge to prop up underneath the charger or it wouldn’t stay in the wall. When we checked in, we had no water and hardly anything in our fridge. Went back to the front desk and they loaded us up the next morning. You can always get water from the lobby also. Found out the fridge is stocked every second day. We would leave the tip and a note of any requests in the fridge for them. Beach vendors - they are around but if you tell them no thank you, they leave you alone. However, if you buy something be prepared to have more follow. Witnessed this first hand with a family that was sitting near us. Seaweed - I’ve read a lot of people complaining about it. There is some on the beach but not much at all. We went for long walks each day on either side and it’s just there. If you don’t care for it near your area, just walk down a bit and you won’t see as much. It’s in the water and there isn’t much the resorts can do really. VIP pool - we went in it a couple times. We found it on the cold side. So we mostly stayed at the beach. Food - We ate at the buffet for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast buffet was really good. In between we ate at the Taino buffet for a quick lunchtime bite if we were hungry. That was really good also. The main buffet opens at 6:30 for dinner. I’d recommend going shortly after that. The food seems to be of better quality. Lots to choose from and it was very good. We never got around to eating at any of the a la carte restaurants. But they always looked busy when walking past. Drinks - All drinks were very good. Definitely generous on the pouring and lots to choose from. We are coffee drinkers and after some trial and error, we found if you asked for coffee black, with cold milk on the side, that was the best option for us. They serve warm milk with the coffee. We didn’t care for that. Lots to choose from at the Capuccino coffee bar and there is a coffee/hot chocolate type machine in the Sports Bar. That was good also. Servers - All staff working the bars, restaurants, the lobby, etc are so friendly and are so attentive. Can’t complain about the service at all. They all were so good. They remember you and great you with a smile each time. Entertainment - We watched it each night aside from one. It was pretty good. Some of it can seem a little cheesy but in the end they do their best and they are very engaging with the crowd.
Excellent Experience in January
Pros VIP Adult Only - great location, bar service, close to ocean Food Outstanding; octopus, calamari, sea bass, tuna, fresh fruit and vegetable variety Wait staff was friendly and accomodating Ate predominately buffet, many choices whoever complains is not understood did not eat at the dining restaurants; looked full at all times Housekeeping outstanding and met all needs Cleanliness maintained throughout resort gymnasium well equipped Sports bar availability for great coffee lobby coffee shop was great grounds well manicured availability of catamarans for sailing, water sports etc included Front Desk accommodating for late check outs and needs Cons the interior lobby and several places needs updating from a color perspective, purple/pink is dated; it is not throughout so it still is pleasant Evening entertainment choices could be better; show starts too late at 930 nightly recommend music in lobby bar we are repeat guests of this resort and will be back again soon!
