    A disappointing holiday.

We have just returned from two weeks at this hotel and we were very underwhelmed. It is definitely not worth the stars it has been given. Many of the staff were in need of customer care training especially the bar and al la carte restaurant staff. The food in the buffet restaurant was absolutely fine but in the al la cartes was generally quite poor. The beach was not cleaned of rubbish from guests and plates, glasses etc adequately. Rubbish was often left around for days. We are not serial moaners but would not recommend this hotel, certainly not value for money.

    Outstanding

From the moment we checked in, the welcome we got was very hospitable, professional, & personable. Everything was so easy to find & the service was exceptional. Whatever we needed from HSKR we got in a timely manner. Our stay was absolutely fantastic & we can’t wait to return. Thx very much…..

    Exceptional holiday destination

This hotel has excellent service, friendly staff, and caters for every taste in the buffet food and also the excellent on site restaurants. Clean and entertainment on all day every day, there’s no reason anyone should be giving this hotel a bad review. We got married here and it was stress free and Beautiful 🤩 x Would deffo recommend whatever type of holiday you require.

Fabulous family holiday - long review!

I travelled with my husband, 6 year old and 1 year old (can’t yet walk). After reading some of the other reviews i was a bit dubious but apart from one minor issue, and one critical observation this hotel and the staff didn’t disappoint. Yes the hotel is loud. Jamaica is loud so this is to be expected! However, from the position of our room we couldn’t hear any of the evening entertainment or the hotel bustle. Yes there is seaweed. The carribean islands are a bit breezy, especially in winter. The breeze blows the seaweed in. It’s not so horrendous it stinks or renders the beach unusable. It’s generally in the shoreline and some days there will be none. The hotel do collect some of it but it would be impossible to collect all of it. The resort is large - it’s a resort not a hotel so a bit of walking it’s to be expected. But it’s not like you are walking miles a day! We used our travel stroller for ease. Where there are steps there are also ramps so it was super easy. All of the staff were great - all friendly and helpful from the reception staff, room housekeeping, hotel housekeeping, waiter and waitresses, bar staff to the entertainment staff, and kids club staff all were a credit to RIU. We booked a side sea view junior suite which was great. A large walk in shower for those beach days, room was spacious enough, plenty of storage, we couldn't hear our neighbours and the housekeeping was fabulous. We did have to chase to be left the right amount of towels - that was the minor issue. Housekeeping were great, my daughter loved the towel animals left on our bed each day - the little things make it a special memorable holiday and were appreciated. Mini bar is fab, included in the package and restocked every 2 days. My 6 year old went to the RIUland kids club. It’s on everyday from 10-12 and 3-5. It’s in the package and you can go to as many sessions as you like. My 6 year old rated it a thousand out of a thousand. There is a great kids soft play area with slides , a craft/quiet room and a covered outdoor area. Activities included a nature walk, stone painting, medal making, colouring, balloon animals, and bracelet making. A special shout out to the staff here. They really make the effort and my 6 year old loved it because of the staff. My child did the morning sessions and save for when we ventured out of the hotel for day trips, went every morning. There were 3 staff members in particular who she became fond of and was sad to say goodbye too. If you’re this review girls, you know who you are! We ate In every restaurant apart from the gourmet one. There is definitely something for everyone. My 6 year old loved the Italian and we all loved the Chinese and steakhouse. Breakfast and lunch at st Ann’s was good. Again, something for everyone and plenty of high chairs in all. I do agree with some of the other reviewers a bigger selection/more Jamaican food in St Ann’s would have been great. Shout out to Arlene here - fantastic service and a lovely lady. My husband rated the adult water slide park and my daughter loved the kids one. The lifeguard was super friendly and another person my daughter was sad to say goodbye too. My 1 year old had a great time splashing in the slide pool - plenty of space for him too and a couple of baby slides. The critical observation… the beach maybe a public beach but as the vast majority of the beach goers are RIU guests the resort could do more to help keep it clean and the litter to a minimum. The beach wasn’t horrid with litter but it wasn’t the cleanest. The majority of the litter was plastic cups from the RIU bars. RIU staff should go out collecting drinks cups for example. I don’t accept the managements comments in other reviews that pass the blame as it is a public beach. This maybe so, but when a company of your size builds a hotel on a public beach and your hotel guests are the vast majority of users, you need to step up and take more responsibility. You can’t control individuals but as a large worldwide company you can set an example and step up.

    Decent property overall

Just enjoyed a two week stay at this property. For the most part, everything was on point. Rooms: spacious, nicely furnished and housekeeping never missed a beat with cleaning, fridge restocked, etc. Bed was on the firm side but comfortable. We requested extra pillows via the app and they were provided. Food: mostly we liked the food. No stomach issues and there was decent variety. The specialty restaurants could be a better experience. If you’re intent on eating at them, best to be there when they first open otherwise you may be out of luck. They issue a limited number of buzzers where you can wait for an available table but most often, they ran out of buzzers and would just suggest you try to come back later. Noticeable lack of atmosphere at these restaurants- nothing in the décor suggested an Italian or steakhouse theme and some background music to drown out the voices and dishes clatter was missing. Also only two of the four offered full table service. Asian was completely buffet and the Italian only served the main course - the other courses were self-service. We loved Kulinarium - food was amazing. The smaller and quieter Italian restaurant offers breakfast daily until noon. It’s a nice way to start the day rather than the big noisy buffet with often long line ups. Bars: sadly they were lacking. Many of the mixed cocktails were waiting in plastic jugs - weren’t freshly mixed. Often, they would be out of an ingredient needed for a cocktail or didn’t have available an item altogether (brandy, bourbon, no limes, no sweet vermouth) - didn’t matter what we ordered, it was hit and miss. They would suggest you just try a different bar. We repeatedly at different bars tried to order mojitos which is a pretty common rum cocktail only to be told over and over that they weren’t available. Unusual too was no sparkling wine of any type on offer which is typically a standard thing available even at the lower level resorts. Pool/beach: pool area nicely maintained with no lack of chairs any time of day. There was a more active, noisier pool area but we preferred a quieter experience at the pools by the wedding gazebo. Also next to the active party pool, a Sandals resort is being built so often there’s construction noise. Beach is lovely- significant sargassum issue on windy days but mostly not a problem. No side tables or umbrellas at the beach. The resort doesn’t have much of anything in walking distance. A taxi into Ocho runs about $20 US each way. As noted in other reviews, the gift shop pricing is ridiculous. As an example, a bag of Lays and two small packs of peanuts was $21US. RIU should not be allowing a shop on their property to be gauging their guests in this manner. Overall we liked our stay however, the lack of proper bar service having frequent lack of availability of basic bar stock will likely have us trying somewhere else next trip.
