  Hotel was beautiful and clean, staff was very welcoming and friendly, food could do with more of a change as seamed very similar every day and night but overall the food was nice and cooked well

  People Really Do Make The Difference

  Riu Review We chose the Riu in Ocho Rios based on location and price. Overall, the hotel is well appointed and good value for money, but by no means a flashy 5-star; more a case of you get what you pay for. The food in the main restaurant, St Ann, provides a good level of choice and quality, albeit very repetitive. We found the other restaurants disappointing, with food in all cases being lukewarm and bland. So we’d recommend sticking to the main restaurant. Aside from this, the drinks are what you would expect from a large and busy all-inclusive hotel. We were impressed with the 24-hour sports bar and complimentary in-room mini bar. Our stay was very much enhanced by the hotel staff, with several going above and beyond to help. Frank, the manager of the St Ann restaurant, was outstanding and couldn’t do enough to ensure we had a positive dining experience. His attitude and service levels are superb. Closely followed by Chavis, who made everyone within his section on the evening service feel like they were VIPs. His positive attitude and energy were infectious. So often, dining out in restaurants managing a large volume of covers can be fraught, but these two gentlemen made it a pleasure. Working off the excesses was made less painful by the support of Andrew in the gym. Again, great attitude, very helpful, and a credit to the team. Whilst the weather wasn’t always kind and sea conditions prevented some activities, we’d also highly recommend the young guys at the water sports centre. With thanks especially to Duane, who spotted us in town one evening and helped us find a great place to eat. Really great guy. If you’re looking for entertainment, it’s very much geared towards families. It can be pretty noisy around the main pool but there are plenty of areas around the pools and beach to suit your individual preferences. For the price, you can’t go far wrong at the Riu. There’s something for everyone, especially if you have children. The food and drink are of a reasonable standard. It’s very clean and well maintained. But overall, the service and staff really enhance the experience. We assume it must be a good place to work, as we met two people who we’d met there over 20 years ago. Dennis handles your luggage with care and a smile, which was a pleasure to see maintained after so many years.

  Expected more from a 5 star hotel

  A la carte restaurants needs to improve their menu. Food was not up to par. For a large property of over 800 rooms, there should be more restaurants. Front desk agent needs to be re-trained. Amenities of the hotel was not said upon check-in, my room number was said out loud, not written (security issue)

  Decent but not favourite AI

  We had a decent week at the Riu but didn’t find that the experience was 5 star. We have stayed at a number of all inclusives in the Caribbean including in Jamaica (mainly Sandals and Beaches) and this definitely doesn’t stack up. The food is ok but nothing noteworthy with the exception of the jerk chicken at Pepe’s and there are limited options between the hours of 4-6:30. The snack bar is supposed to fill this gap but didn’t have much said from stale tortilla chips. The rooms are quite nice as is the beach and we didn’t have too many problems finding a chair by the pool or beach. Entertainment quality varied but we really enjoyed Silver Birds which is an outside group. Daily yoga classes were pretty good. There is no poolside or beachside drink service. We came to the Riu as part of a large group and I don’t think I would seek to return or try another Riu.

  In Jamaica we don't have problems, we have situations;)

  Never have we seen such attention to room and hotel cleanliness and maintenance in such a large Staff were friendly, helpful. The location near the beach was appreciated. The food was a bit above average. Having food allergies I would have appreciated a site to read up on food contents. The rooms were large. Our clothes were very damp by the end of our stay. The heavy wood doors to the rooms needed their hydraulic closers all needed adjustments. A closing door cannonaded down the tile floored stucco halls disturbing the quiet. Rolling suitcase wheels coukd be heard rumbling day and night. The doors could use a rubber damping device to help minimize the closing door especially if the plastic door was open. I was pleased the Riu company contributed funds to their employees after the disastrous Hurricane Melissa. We delighted in tipping the courteous, hard working staff from floor cleaners, and waiters and cleaners. Waiters allowed us to move tables for our family to all sit together. All in all, a great hotel! Thank you!
