Very loud hotel, good for those wanting to party
My husband and I stayed at the Riu Montego Bay after our original hotel booking was canceled 2 weeks before our departure date. It is important to note that we would not have chosen this hotel but didn't have much of a choice and we still are happy to have gone to Jamaica. Pros: - Buffet food was great. Lots of variety. Golden Dragon Japanese restaurant was good. Sophia Italian restaurant was just ok. It would be great if the restaurants had more of an authentic feel corresponding to the theme. - Steakhouse restaurant was excellent. - Animators and shows were fantastic. They are what make this hotel worth going to. The performances were incredible. They engaged with the audience during the shoes and during the day at the pool and beach. They also really focused on safety during each of the games and activities, which was nice to see. - Rooms were good. - Bars were good. It would be nice to have drink menus at bars, including beach bars. - Lots of activities organized for guests. - Wifi worked everywhere. - Service was very good. Everyone was pleasant. Unlike some other hotels, we did not feel hassled to tip constantly or buy from vendors, so that was nice and made it less stressful. - Workers kept the hotel very clean. There were always people going around to mop the floors or clean up unsafe areas. - Short 10 min drive to airport. Cons: - Very loud hotel. Pool music could often be heard from very end of the beach, including our hotel room with doors and windows closed. (Our hotel room was not facing the pool.) - Our hotel room was on the 3rd floor and when inside the room, we could hear people talking in the hallways, closing doors, footsteps, etc. Again it is not a quiet hotel. - Regular taxi to get anywhere was very expensive ($60-80USD). We took a route taxi to the Hip Strip for 140 JMD (under $2 USD) to get downtown. You just need to walk outside the hotel, cross the street intersection and stick your arm out and tell them where you are going. Make sure to check that the license plate is red and it has the official logo on the side. Ask the driver the price before getting into the taxi. To come back, you have to tell the taxi you are going to Iron Shore, the area for the Riu Hotel. Note that route taxis are shared. It is for working Jamaicans going about their lives. We felt perfectly safe. - Check-in was very slow. - Beach is just ok. Only a few places with shade. It would be nice if the hotel provided umbrellas on the beach. - Water is just ok. Lots of sediment from the grassy bottom. Almost no marine life to see as the water is cloudy when we tried snorkeling. - Planes fly overhead often throughout the day so if you are having a conversation, you have to pause while the plane flies overhead. Again it is not a peaceful hotel. - Grounds had no flowers. - Gym was too small and equipment is old. It should be twice the size for the amount of guests who are there. It smelled bad and needs a good cleaning. There was only 1 treadmill working when we were there. - Restaurants only let you book 2 days in advance and book up quickly. You basically have to try to reserve at 12:01am when booking opens to try to get the time you want.

Relaxing and fun stay
Stayed for seven nights. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The housekeeping staff got a little grumpy in the afternoon and wouldn’t acknowledge that you were even there. Also they don’t have staff in the pool areas to bring you drinks. You have to go stand in line at the bars. Those two things are the only negatives I have. Restaurant staff was awesome especially Santana at the Rose Hall buffet.the entertainment throughout the day and night was a lot of fun.

Wedding anniversary
Visiting to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my wife, still have three days left. Upon arrival, quick checkin and changed our room due to us wanting a quieter location with no hassle. Room 6011. Weather was awful for the first three days and the hotel tried to keep guests entertained. We went on a trip to Kingston - blue mountain, Bob Marley museum and some sightseeing through TUI. OUR guide - Jerome was the best guide we’ve ever had and we’ve been fortunate to go on many excursions- try to see if you can get the trip with him, does others apart from this one. Food: buffet, plentiful and very nice. Those who complain about lack of choice need to stay out of the sun! Drinks - ask for brands otherwise you’ll get local brands. Room stocked every two days with red stripe, water and sodas. Nice bar with vodka, Gordon’s gin, Johnnie Walker whisky and rum also available foc. Bathroom large and very clean. Air con good but loud, would recommend putting it on before you go out for dinner and then switching off/down upon your return, Was disappointed the hotel could not provide an extension cable as I wanted to wanted to watch a game of football on tv and needed to insert my fire stick or put the game on in a sports bar that only shows golf and basketball. Beach small, very clean, sea lovely temperature but un-Caribbean like, lots of sea weed on the floor and murky as opposed to clear water. Guys in their boats selling bits and bobs, including the local tobacco, we’re not a nuisance or pushy. Buffet - very good Italian - average Steak house - trying tonight but lots of people commented on it’s great Would we return, questionable as we’ve been to Jamaica a few times now, would we recommend, yes, but not yes without consideration
