The nightmare before Christmas, with the happy ending...
Everyone knows the disadvantages of the Rio - it's off the strip, "no one goes there". Personally, the location doesn't bother me and aside from a short detour, I stayed in the casino for the entirety of my three night stay and enjoyed most of it. While I wouldn't call the casino "lively", it was active enough, even at the slow time of year right before Christmas, for friendly engagement with fellow players and guests and I only felt isolated when playing slots at the edges of the casino. The biggest disappointment was the room. I was in a "suite", but there were no amenities in the room beyond what would be in a normal hotel room. No fridge, no minibar, no partition of any kind between the bed and what would be considered the "living space". The room was huge and the floor to ceiling windows did give a nice view of the upper strip from the 20th floor of the Ipanema Tower. But that wasn't the disappointment. When I entered, I noticed that someone had spit into the sink and not rinsed it away. The TV didn't work ("menu not available" - no signal) and there was a notice from housekeeping that the water would be shut off on the following day from 11a-2p. "Rio" indeed, I thought. More like the Amazon rain forest. So, nightmare trip, right? Patience my friend. There were two sinks, so I used the other one. The water shutoff was not hotel wide, as I feared, and may never even have happened since I made plans to be out of the room anyway. When I did return to the room, the sinks were both clean and the room was freshened. But the TV....nope. Anyway, the reason I come to Vegas is to gamble a bit but mostly to have time to meet new people from all over, and that is what happened. The Masquerade Bar was a bit dismal, with the bartender and 2 waitresses chatting among themselves, but the Lapa Lounge center bar was a far better experience. The bartenders were chatty and attentive and guests flowed in and out, providing ample opportunity for conversation. The casino play was as expected, with the low limits ($3 craps!) being extremely popular - so popular that I was limited to only a single session in the time I was there, playing for $10 in the late afternoon with a table full of both locals and guests like myself. The staff were knowledgeable and fun. Slots were plentiful, but with the paucity of waitresses, any play away from the center of the casino left one isolated from service. Take that as either or negative, lol. The TV situation in the room got fixed, after a hilarious misadventure with "Rio Rita" on the phone, followed by physical requests at the front desk for two mornings in a row. Rio is big on AI, but technology always assumes that everything can be fixed with technology even when the solution is a simple physical action. The food choices were abundant enough, and the happy hour at Luckley's was an outright steal - a dozen oysters, a tasty cheeseburger, a shot of Casamigos and a draft beer for $50. The hotel store was outrageously expensive, but that's the same at every hotel everywhere. For those intrepid souls like myself, there's a Walgreen's across the street from the hotel for sundries at a much more reasonable price. The summation? At the end of the trip, I felt that I enjoyed my stay maybe even more than expected, even with the nightmare beginning. My recommendation is a definite "go" to those who go to Vegas for gambling and food and drink, but I can't recommend things like shopping, shows, the pool (which was of course closed for winter) as I didn't do any of that.

Classic Hotel Casino in the Heart of Vegas
Love the atmosphere of the hotel. From classic casinos machines, amenities, the architecture, and customer service always tentative. The location is perfect across the strip, bridge, hotels, casinos, restaurants, and interactive places to go. I loved it for a short stay. RECOMMEND IT for anyone wanting to stay at a amazing looking hotel. Plus, I had an Air BnB booking on the 38th floor.

Amazing picturesque Mountain views without functional phones
We stayed in room 36001 in the masquerade tower. None of the hotel phones worked in our room. Various furniture damaged, a hole in the living room couch, dining room chairs were not able to be used because the legs were not properly secured, bedroom & bathroom lights not working, multiple electrical outlets loose and broken covers, and shower tile damaged & missing. No microwave or even a coffee maker in the room for such an extremely large suite. The entire 36th floor hallway smelled horrible during our entire stay, and the carpet was stained. The smell of cannabis could be smelled coming in from nearby guest. Also at times it sounded like people in the lock-off room attempted to open the door several times. I also I was completely dissatisfied to find out the food canteen, and Hash House was closed during our entire stay which limited our dining options inside the hotel.

Nice renovated hotel.
Nice hotel off the strip. Easy to get around not too much traffic. Has been renovated which is nice. The food court has good food. My wife loved Kangs Kitchen Korean bbq. The new Eggslut restaurant was nice for a quick breakfast. Overall I loved it and I will be back. Has many other restaurants too.

Great for a relaxing atmosphere.
The slow pace and vibe of the casino is a plus for us. Renovated rooms were clean and comfortable. Value was great for what we received.
