No Electricity! No A/C!
No electricity! No AC! No Wi-Fi! No elevator! I stayed 14 hours at this hotel. The electricity was unavailable about 1/2 of the time I stayed there. I had to check out immediately in the morning. I could not stay any longer at a hotel that had no A/C or where I might get trapped in an elevator! I deserve a FULL refund, however Playa Azul Hotel wants to charge me for the miserable night I spent there in the sweltering heat!

Old school charm
What a wonderful piece of old school charm away from the hustle and bustle in San Miguel which can be over run by cruise ship passengers. The staff was so friendly and attentive. Roberto at the front desk quickly found us a new room when we reported a noisy AC in our initial room, and Guadalupe was always quick with a cheery smile and hot coffee at the breakfast buffet. After a trip into town and around the island, we decided to spend most of our time at the little beach right in front of the Playa Azul. The snorkeling between the Playa Azul and the Cozumeleno to the north is an easy drift with the current, but don't get too far from shore and don't try to swim back (the current can be stronger than you realize). Just wear some water shoes, get out at the Cozumeleno beach, and walk back to the Playa Azul following the coastline. I tried something different on the menu for almost every meal. It was all delicious and usually exceed my expectations. Most evenings we had our meals on a little table next to the Palapa beach bar where we could watch the sunset.

A great break from the big all inclusive style resort, personalized service and accommodation for a relaxing vacation.
The perfect trip for the entire family top to bottom. Couldn’t have been happier with our decision to stay with Playa Azul. Their staff is genuine and attentive no details were avoided. Whether at the seaside bar (Kermit, Darwin, Martin & Ivan) or in the restaurant (Guadalupe & the rest of the staff) and most importantly Luis who seemed to always be in the right place at the right to with whatever you needed. The hotel itself is great, not to newest or fanciest I imagine but kept in very good condition at all times. We had zero issues with our room or the service. The buffet breakfast was also high quality and fresh daily. Fresh eggs, fruit and breads as well as a great mix of fantastic regional dishes and never the same thing. Beers are a little expensive at the bar but the service made it worth while. They do allow coolers to be brought in to the resort so save yourself a few dollars and bring a collapsible cooler and hit the Mercado while you’re out in town.

A special place (hope to return)
We fell in love with this place. The food that you can order at the beach bar is amazing (and huge, shareable portions)—a bit pricy but worth it. You can charge all food and drinks to your room so no need to carry a wallet. The view and relaxing vibe are perfect. Snorkeling from the beach was a highlight of my vacation. The water is AMAZING. We hope to return someday. We came from an all inclusive in playa del Carmen and the change took a bit of a mind shift. It’s a charming older building with a few maintenance/age issues. I thought the beds were comfortable and the showers ran hot with great water pressure. Housekeeping was generous with the bottled water and our room was promptly cleaned daily. It’s north side location makes for a long cab ride to get to activities south of San Miguel. Staff is helpful and friendly. My teen & tween were slightly bored after leaving the AI but they loved that the hotel had a pool table. Bottom line: a great place to relax in a beach chair, eat, and snorkel all day.

Nice 3.5* moderate hotel
Playa Azul is nice. We enjoyed our stay. The room was good. Very clean property. Food in the main restaurant is very good to excellent. Free breakfast is good quality. Service is very good. Flowery towel animals are a nice touch. Beach area nice and the snorkeling just to the north between the hotel and the adjacent Westin is quite good especially when you consider how accessible it is. Diverse guests. This property doesn’t specifically focus on Americans and that’s ok. I’d say about half the guests are American/Canadian and the staff do speak good English. The negative reviews largely reflect inappropriate expectations. This is NOT a luxury property! There ARE plastic chairs! Some areas are old and outdated. Oh well. The price reflects all of this and the property is a good value. Go in with the right expectations and you’ll enjoy.
