    Perfect for Families

We rented Konea 818 (penthouse) through Maui Resort Rentals for a week in Feb. Our family of 5 loved the condo and the resort. Condo was stocked with all the things needed for our trip, including plenty of cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and even Laundry Detergent. Pans/appliances were like new and we loved having the Vitamix. There was a small store in the lobby for all necessities. Smoothies, coffee and Boba were decently priced. FREE VALET!! Other than the valet, though, there was no "front desk" or "concierge" in our building for the whole week. Pool towels are plentiful and returned via a chip system. Pools were clean and pretty crowded and you need to get down there before 10am to get chairs. There is a quiet adults only pool. Food and drinks poolside from Dukes were good. Our tween and teens loved using the hot tubs at night. Location was great, only 20 min to the North Shore (even less to Napili). Full grocery store and Slappy Cakes (breakfast) right across the street. Also a food truck park which we didnt use, but I saw a lot of guests walking to and from there from the resort with takeout containers. A 15 min walk down the path takes you to a different resort where you can catch the Green Trolley to Whalers Village. Great snorkeling at Airport Beach about a 10 min walk south. All in all, we would recomend this condo resort if you are looking for a spacious, clean condo, with resort amenities like the great pools, hot tubs, and Dukes!

    Resort on the decline

We've stayed at the Honua Kai 4 times over the years. We've noticed a steady decline in the quality of the resort and overall cleanliness since we were first here about 10 years ago. The hallways are overly scented vs being cleaned. Our unit smells like someone who stayed here spent the week smoking in the unit. It smells to the point that my eyes burn. The unit wasn't swept between guests. I'm leaving my clothes in my suitcase because it just feels that dirty. Yuck.

Disappointing in every respect - accommodations, service, and communication

Disappointing in every sense of the word. Did not realize that daily housekeeping was provided at this property and that we could contact housekeeping if/when we needed additional towels/toiletries. Condition of the room and appliances was also lacking. Water leaked from the refrigerator door - turned out that the water dispense tray was overflowing - it would have been nice if a staff person had checked before we arrived. AC unit/thermostat stopped working on the second day when we returned to the room that evening. We contacted the front desk at 9:20pm and was told someone would come within an hour. Waited till 10:30 before another call to the front desk - then I was told that maintenance is gone for the day as their work day ends at 9:45pm. She could not explain why I wasn't told that on my initial call. I asked that no once come until after 10am the next day. Got a call at 8am saying that they had a guy waiting outside our door. I reminded them of my request for no one until after 10am. So we went out for the day and came in the afternoon. AC unit was repaired but was set to run only for 30 minutes. We had to manually turn it back on every half hour. Contacted front desk again and asked that maintenance return to set it to run continuously. Next issue is that the lighting in the room was terrible - especially in the bathroom and living room - the lights/lightbulbs were insufficient. Front desk was also not particularly friendly or warm especially upon check out. I suspect that unless your reservation is part of a time share promotion - your accommodation is going to be extremely lacking. Needless to say, I don't recommend this location.

Kind of blah for a couples getaway

My husband and I stayed for 10 days at this resort in Kaanapali mid-January 2026. We selected it through Air Canada Vacations. For us, it was poor value. First we reserved a room with "mountain views" thinking this would be quieter, based on the images on the resort website. No such thing. We saw distant mountains, but had to look past the parking. Looking wasn't so bad, but listening was a drag--we were right over the entrance on the 4th floor and could hear the incessant backup beeps of many delivery trucks. So my first advice, if you choose this resort is to reserve a suite on the ocean view side. Second, this resort is not a hotel. It is a development of self-owned units of various sizes that Outrigger manages for the owners. So, what you see in the website pics is not necessarily what you get. We chose a 1-bedroom unit, which was roomy enough for the two of us. The positive was the bed (a king) was very comfortable. As for the rest, hmmmm, not exactly a vacation paradise. The unit was actually kind of shabby, and the carpets and sofa had seen better days, probably back at the beginning of this century. Very very well worn. The shower curtain had some mildew spots. And the unit was badly in need of a paint job. The resort proudly advertises Bosch appliance, and the appliances all had the Bosch label, but based on Bosch appliances I've owned these were bottom of the price range. Nevertheless they were serviceable. The grounds were lovely and well taken care of, and the lobby was very nice (aside from the lobby furniture being a bit tired and lumpy), but our unit was nothing like the lobby in terms of aesthetics and comfort. What I really didn't like was the fact that the Outrigger is not a hotel with hotel amenities. The toiletries were passable. The towels were okay. But there was no laundry or housekeeping service. You do your own laundry and take your garbage down to the shoot and the end of the hall. If you want to get rid of the dust that collects on surfaces, you do that yourself, using one of the handy bath towels. There was also a feeling of being a tenant, as twice in the 10 days we were there, notices were slipped under our door. First was to change the batteries on the door lock, second was to make sure our counters were clean as the pest company would be, giving us a four hour window. In the second case we felt we had to be out of the suite during the entire time. I’ve never had an experience like that in a hotel There is no room service, though apparently you can get poolside service from Duke's restaurant which is on the grounds. Dukes is a fine restaurant with excellent friendly service and nicely prepared very tasty food. But their menu is fairly limited, so you will want to go out to other places or bring in take out some nights. I wouldn't attempt any serious cooking in the units, but that is true of any "hotel" suite I've ever stayed in. We like staying in hotel suites because we like our own coffee, brewed our own way, and the opportunity to drink it slowly and hang out in the mornings. An ocean view unit would have been the better choice for us, as would a proper hotel. That said, it seemed there were a lot of families with young children who really seemed to like the resort. There are seven pools, none more than 3 feet deep, and none very large. We didn't go in until after sundown when the families would go back to their units. There was the towel on chaise lounge game--many many lounges where people had gone at sunrise and placed their towel but towel owners nowhere to be found. We don't suntan, so it was no bother to us, but I've read a lot of complaints about this. The beach is nice, but apparently not very swimmable. We didn't go in, though we bought some water shoes to protect our feet from coral and rocks. There are many better beaches in Maui, including right next door at the Westin, apparently. We had paid a fair whack of cash for our time at Honua Kai, but at checkout there was another bill to pay. It amounted to just over $1000 Canadian, and covered cleaning, resort fees, and some kind of damage waiver, which I guess was insurance in case we broke something. I prefer to pay for everything up front and not be gouged at checkout. The lobby staff was the only staff I had any conversation with. I don't know if they are just tired, or tired of all the guest complaints. I wouldn't call them incompetent, or even unprofessional, but they didn't appear interested in assisting beyond the bare minimum. During the 10 days we were there I noticed a collection of candy wrappers and paper straws, doubtlessly dropped by children, that were never picked up, I never say anyone vacuuming the common hallway. All in, I'd prefer to pay for a conventional hotel, with room service, a couple of restaurants, and regular housekeeping. For a very few dollars more you could have a more comfortable vacation.

    Not great

I’m here right now and I was going to wait until we left to write a review, but too many things have gone wrong and I wanted to say it now. I rarely complain and I have stayed here before in 2019. We called the day before, because it said on its website that if we needed one of the bedrooms, which had 1 king size bed, switched to two twins, all we had to do was call and ask. So I did that the day before we arrived and was told no problem. We get there and that had not been done. Long story short that was not available. There were dishes and bowls dirty but put away as if they were clean. There were someone else’s clothes left behind in our closet, so they must have not cleaned that well. We rented directly through the property but they offered no housekeeping , the entire week we were there. For some reason there were only a couple places to get towels for the pool and it always felt like you had to walk really far to get them, unless you rented through a third party, then there were places everywhere to get towels. Lastly, the staff seemed inpatient and not friendly pretty much everywhere on the property. For the amount of money we paid, we expected a higher level of customer service and options provided.
