really enjoyed our stay
We spent 7 nights at the Occidental Tamarindo in May`23 and really loved it.... the location directly at the beach allows long beach walks to downtown Tamarindo (to the right) or crossing the small river and walking into the natural park (to the left). Inside the premises we met many (for us) exotic animals (iguanas, ara, racoons, lizards, red crabs, monkeys, various bird species etc). The food at the buffet was excellent, no longer waiting lines, many choices to try at breakfast, lunch and dinner .... we ate a lot as we wanted to try everything, including the tasty Teppanyaki and Sushi at the Kyoto restaurant - all inclusive :-) The rooms are clean and spacy (ours was 31m²). The staff was friendly and we enjoyed free WiFi, although the coverage in some rooms is spoty... We also recommend the turtle watching tour at night as we were able to see the small baby turtles leaving their nest and a big Green Pacific Sea Turtle building a new one. We would definetly come back to Occidental Tamarindo!

Overall mediocre but great location.
We were a family of 4 with two rooms . The Good the bad and the ugly. The Bad: we had had to change the dates of our reservation a month ago so I purposefully called the main Barcelo toll free number to ensure it would be done correctly. when we arrived at the hotel , after being awake for over 24 hrs , tired, and hot, they had no record of our reservation! I showed them the confirmation information confirming the dates. But apparently the reception staff could not resolve it and the confirmation info was not enough. They had to call in a manager and apparently the manager was not on the premises (4:30 pm approx) and it would take about 20 minutes for him to arrive) Mind you at this point we had been at the desk about 30 minutes. We were in our jeans and it was extremely hot and humid. I asked if we could grab something to drink, they said “No”. Finally the manager arrived and said he fixed the reservation but the price would be different, I rebuked that and he conceded. In total, well over 1 hour to get checked in. The breakfast buffet was good, the lunch and dinner not so much, pretty much the same non-appetizing variety of buffet food everyday. The Riu palace had much better quality of food and presentation. The 2 ala carte restaurants were good but you are only Allowed to eat at those twice for a 7 day stay. The ugly: was the snack food by the pool bar, it was awful- picture food at the gas station mini mart. Another extreme Annoyance was our room key card was consistently not working . We were at the furthest building in the premises and it took 10 minutes to walk to reception each time. We had to do this 2-3 times a day in-spite of keeping the room key cards away from our phone and other cards. some of the Staff were like robots who didn’t like their jobs. Namely the young man at the pool bar. He never greeted me, never smiled, seemed like I was imposing on him. The good :On the other hand, there was an older lady that bartended at the pool bar and the Lobby bar and she was friendly and pleasant. In the buffet restaurant there was a fair young waitress light brown colored hair that had the same robot personality as the pool bartender. while another waitress at the Buffet restaurant I think her name was Adina was the friendliest most pleasant lady Also Claudio the bell hop was the best and most helpful on several occasions and always greeted us with a smile . The grounds were nice and clean. There are only shows on the weekends and the rest of the week the “entertainment “ was “Meh”. Very low attendance. Our room was right next to the amphitheater so we could hear and see it from our room. The pool activities were very limited and definitely did not have the lively games and festive vacation atmosphere that the Riu and the Riu Palace had. We had a 22 yr old and 18 yr old and there was no Lively games or activities for them at this resort like there was at the Riu. I also wished they had more variety of music instead of just the salsa music. The band in the lobby and pool areas was good, but again wished they had played more variety. What this all inclusive has over the Riu and Riu palace is Location Location, you can walk into Tamarindo or take a 5 minute car ride. The beach was good rocky in front but good to the left.

Pleasant surprise
5 night stay at this resort. Great oceanfront room; we only paid for a regular and were very surprised when our porter opened up the front door to our room and we were bumped up to ocean view. The food was good but not spectacular. This is a 3.5 star hotel @ $200 US per night, and we felt that we received very good value for our money.

Poor
No drinking in or by the pool! Not even water!!! No hostess service, food at the buffet and Italian restaurant were awful. Most, not all, of the staff was rude. We've been to Costa Rica many time and this was the most disappointing place we've tried. We'll never visit this location again.

Fantastic stay
Fantastic place to stay. Access to private beach, kayaks, and outdoor games. The food was a delicious buffett 3 times a day! Friendly staff, very helpful with silly questions and with transport communication. Definitely coming back here very soon.
