    Great experience

I couldn’t recommend the Kona Kai more for many different reasons. I’ll start by saying that I was hosting a work holiday party which is what originally brought my wife and I to the Resort. We decided to stay for two nights to enjoy a little holiday getaway! I’ll break my review up into two categories: Our holiday party and my personal stay:) First off, the Event Coordinators, Events Team, and Banquets Team are amazing. Marianna was my direct contact and she was excellent! She was extremely professional, quick to respond and incredibly solution driven! I will say the entire staff at Kona Kai provided solutions for many of the challenges that arise when planning a large scale event. Chris and Manny were also amazing! They stayed for the entire event and continued to check-in and ensure everything was running with excellence. This team is led by Joseph who is a top tier leader and very professional. These Four and their teams really made this night so special. Now for the hotel stay:) My wife and I stayed in the Junior Bayview Suite. Room was really nice and the view was awesome. Just outside of our room there was fire pits and a short walk to the restaurant and two pools. My wife commented on how nice it was that there was a lot to do around the hotel, and a great place to stay if you truly don’t want to leave your hotel. Again, the staff is so kind, professional, and solution based from the restaurant, to the poolside service, to the front desk. I will also add the food is delicious at the Vessel Restaurant!

    Hard Pass on Kona Kai

Very poorly maintained rooms and common areas. Old and stained furniture, plumbing fixtures that should have been replaced years ago, cheap flooring, broken door hardware, peeling wallcovering, the list goes on. It appears most of the budget was spend on landscaping the amenities. Booked through the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel portal as part of "The Edit" collection. Severely disappointed with the seemingly random service charges ($46 daily resort fee that check-in tried to charge again when I arrived, $46 daily parking fee, 5% breakfast surcharge fee, 20% automatic gratuity fee). The only plus was the free EV charging stalls.

    Great location, Understaffed, Deceptive pricing.

The hotel has an amazing location and the rooms are reasonably nice, though there is a great deal of noise transfer between rooms. However, the operation of the hotel is inadequate and the its pricing is deceptive. At check-in we were told we were upgraded, when in fact we had been downgraded. After spending time talking to the front desk we were eventually moved to the agreed upon room. The hotel also misrepresents at check-in what is included, literally providing a document that lists things as complimentary that it then charges for. At check-out the front desk was understaffed and when I eventually was able to speak with someone, he said he could not address the situation and I would have to wait for a call from a manager. But the manager never called. If you stay here, assume your bill will be 25-50% more than you expect and agreed to.

    Terrible Hotel

There are tons of other hotels within San Diego that are better. Please avoid this hotel at all costs. It's a ghost town here with nearly zero staff and impossible to get a hold of anyone. Zero hospitality.

    Amazing top to bottom!

Amazing property, views, and staff! The food at Vestal really made the experience - be sure to order the pork chop when you visit!
