Great staff, hotel could do with some improvements

We have just returned from a 10 night stay at Iberostar Rose Hall Beach. First of all, we were warmly welcomed by the reception staff, who gave us plenty of information. Something I will say though is that it would have been nice for this to have been written down/provided an information booklet with. Nonetheless, we were happy with our greeting. Our room was very clean upon arrival. Slightly outdated, if we’re being picky but overall, we were happy with our accommodation and housekeeping throughout our trip. The food perhaps let us down the most about the resort. There were a few restaurants to dine at but overall, we were not overly impressed with the food. One stand out, however, was the Japanese restaurant, which was probably the tastiest food we had at the resort. A real highlight of our trip was the entertainment staff. We’d like to especially mention Freshh, Skinny, Finez, Big Wayne, Stewy. They were very interactive, friendly, and keen to get guests involved with activities. We would also like to highlight the bar staff at the lobby and the waiters/waitresses, who were incredibly polite and attentive. Overall, we wouldn’t rate this a 4 star resort. However, this is of no fault of the staff.

    Save yourself the headache

I recently booked a three-day stay at this resort as a quick getaway to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Based on the online reviews, I decided to give it a try, hoping for a memorable and relaxing experience. Unfortunately, my stay has been anything but enjoyable. The experience started off on a positive note. Upon arrival, the front desk staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, which initially reassured me that I had made a good choice. However, the issues began the moment I entered our room. The air was filled with an overpowering smell of chemicals or paint, which immediately triggered an asthma attack. I had to use my emergency inhaler to stabilize my breathing—a distressing start to what was supposed to be a relaxing trip. I promptly called the front desk to report the issue. A gentleman answered the phone but didn’t speak a single word—not even to ask me to hold—leaving me frustrated and confused. Since I received no assistance over the phone, I decided to walk down to the front desk to address the issue in person. When I explained the situation, I was met with indifference. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the severity of what had occurred. While they did move us to another room, it felt like a downgrade rather than a resolution. The original room I booked offered a view of the pool and ocean from the fourth floor, which was one of the reasons I chose this resort. The new room, however, faced a wall—completely diminishing the experience and failing to meet the expectations set by my reservation. What’s most disappointing is the lack of empathy and effort to provide an adequate solution. No one took responsibility or made any attempt to compensate for the inconvenience, the health risk, or the overall dissatisfaction. This situation could have been handled with much more professionalism and care, which would have left me with a better impression of the resort. This was meant to be a special occasion, and I initially told my husband that this might be a great place to bring our family for a future vacation. However, this experience has left a bad impression, and I can confidently say I will not be returning. For anyone considering this resort, I strongly recommend doing thorough research and weighing other options before booking. My stay has been highly disappointing, and I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this resort to others.

A Troubled Stay at Iberostar Waves Rose Hall Beach

We stayed at Iberostar Waves Rose Hall Beach from November 18th to 25th, as our twelfth Iberostar vacation. We were informed through social media reports of a staff strike/discontent with management before and during our stay. This was very apparent to the guests and led to poor, inconsistent service and a very negative atmosphere. This was most apparent at the ice cream shop and the lobby bar (which would refuse to serve certain drinks listed on the menu, depending on the bartender, and claim not to know what they were) . The food was very hit-or-miss. The menu at the buffet was limited and not varied from day to day. The best food to be had at the resort is at the smokehouse (“Uncle Tony’s”), and the staff there seem to be a cut above the rest. An unexpected blackout during dinner was handled very professionally by all the staff there. The Japanese restaurant was long on spectacle and short on authentic Japanese cuisine. The entrees at the Italian restaurant were decent, but the appetizer buffet left something to be desired and the service was outright hostile, even from the restaurant supervisor. The beach was solid, with above-average snorkeling opportunities. The watersports were operated by a third-party company and were excellent. Unfortunately, the pool was not as good. The water was very dirty and filled with insects, the water temperature was inconsistent but usually uncomfortably cold, and the single central pool was too loud at most times of day for us to enjoy. We have had very good experiences at Iberostar restaurants in the past, but this did not live up to our expectations. Only some of our negative experiences can be attributed to the ongoing labour action.

    Dissapointed Guest

Check-in and check-out were quick but no smiles from anyone in the front desk. Did not feel welcome at all. In our room the safe did not work, and we had to call maintenance who then changed the batteries. The numbers on the safe were so worn out, you could not make out 3 from 9. The bathroom had mold under the sink and around the bathtub. The flush worked off and on. The drain stopper in the bathtub and the sink were not screwed in. The coffee maker was of poor design and spilled coffee when being poured. Non-use of plastic bottle is a great idea but I was worried that housekeeping had not washed the glass reusable bottle properly. After cleaning the bottle, housekeeping should put some kind seal on the lid. The bed was comfortable. The room temperature does not go below 21 C, about 70 F. We are fond of keeping temperature at 65F, so that was not very comfortable for us. Also, not many plug points in the room if you want to charge multiple devices. Restaurants: Italian was average, as was the Japanese one. Jamaican was great! Buffet breakfast and lunch were better than average. Service in the restaurants were great! Bar drinks were not top-shelf. But it was open until 1 am. Service was great; Tanya at the bar was excellent - service with a smile! Live music was great! Pool was okay. But they should not allow kids with diapers in the pool. Swim-up bar was average. Entertainment and games by the pool were excellent! Nightly entertainment was great! The foam party was super. The nightclub was average. Gym: It was top class. Concierge was a pain. They try to rope you in to buy Iberostar membership. We spent 3 hours of our time listening to their sales pitch. In the end they want us to cough up 25 percent of the membership fees (in the thousands) then and there. Simply avoid! Other than the front desk, service of the staff was great! Entertainment staff were superb - 10/10. It is a budget-friendly hotel thoug. Overall, I rate it a 3/5. I don't think I will ever return here.

Can overlook the small things to see the bigger picture thanks to great people and good fun!

We arrived to a seamless check-in by Khalil, who greeted us with a smile and made sure we had the appropriate number of beds in our room. I had added an extra child before arriving so without asking, he offered to have two doubles instead of a king in the room. A thoughtful perspective from him! Though we were initially put in a room in a building undergoing construction, front desk was apologetic and secured me a room in a quieter building for the following night. I would recommend avoiding any rooms starting with a "1" until the construction is finished, as hammering starts at 8am. So, while it was inconvenient to have to change rooms after one night, I was grateful to have a much quieter place for the rest of the trip. The grounds are lovely. Grounds crew are constantly out cutting grass, trimming bushes, sweeping, mopping, etc. There was NO sargassium on the beach which was pleasant and unexpected. The water was warm in the ocean, clear most days and there are shallow reefs that can be snorkelled. From what we can tell some upgrades have been completed in rooms. Our first room had a tub/shower combination, our second room had a walk in shower. I love the feature of having a door that divides the living space from the entry way. It muffled the noise from the hallway. The room darkening blinds were a blessing as well, as we faced east and didn't get blasted with morning sun while we were trying to sleep! The Star Club was hit or miss, but that's no fault of the resort. The entertainers there were excellent and spent a lot of time with my kiddos (7 and 12) when they were available. Some days there were just no other kids. The one full day the 7 year old went, he didn't want to leave. They did art, activities in the pool and on the beach, went to the buffet, they were very well cared for. I had a massage at the Spa which was located in the sister resort, "the selection". Highly recommend that experience, I saw there were massage tables on the beach as well. The spa was a serene environment and I was treated like a queen. While we were on the resort, the employees went on strike for a day. My concierge messaged me directly to offer to go and get food for myself and my kids; that wasn't necessary, as hotel staff that were not normally deployed to the buffet all pulled together and made sure the guests were taken care of. It was an impressive sight to see. We tried out the tennis/pickleball courts, which also had basketball and soccer nets - one day there was someone there giving out equipment to use, the other day there was not, with no explanation. So bring your own stuff if you don't want to be disappointed! The night time activities were hit or miss. Sometimes there were things on the schedule that didn't happen, other times there were activities running that were not on a schedule that were a pleasant surprise! When karaoke was running and the right people were in the sports bar, it was super fun! There is a ping pong table in the lobby, a few pool tables around the resort, and at the towel hut there are pieces of sports equipment to use. There are mini soccer nets on the beach and a beach volleyball court. Dressel divers have a station on site to arrange scuba and snorkelling trips, and you can take out kayaks, paddleboards and hobie cats for free. The food at the Italian place was our favorite, followed very closely by the Smoke house. I loved that the a la cartes were walk in only and had plenty of room. You need reservations for the Japanese restaurant, which is very loud as a fair warning to people who get overstimulated by that. The buffet at breakfast was our favourite with a different fresh pressed juice available every day, and assorted coffees, teas, and other juices, sausages, bacon, hashbrowns, pancakes, sweet and savoury items. There was no boredom at those meals. The jerk hut was where we did most of our lunches as the chicken and coco bread were SO GOOD. Do not miss this chicken! The patties were mild enough a kid could eat them, too. There was one pool that was divided by a barrier, separating the swim up bar section from the activities section. The pool could have been cleaner; it was murky when I tried the free scuba demonstration and had lots of sand and floating bugs. There were poolside games that happened a couple times a day, and prizes to be won. The night time shows were impressive, we saw a magic show, a fire show, and a Michael Jackson tribute - all were excellent. Be kind to the people selling stuff on the beach. It's a poor country and they're just trying to make a living. They are receptive to smiles and politeness, and won't push once you decline. They'll wave every day you walk by. If you want your hair braided, go see Paula - she's quick and so sweet! There are no shortage of bars on the premise, and filtered water stations throughout the resort. It really does feel like Iberostar thought of everything. I liked the experience enough to commit to coming back here for the next 10 years (and its sister resorts). Overall, we would recommend this resort. Come with the attitude that you'll entertain yourself, that way you'll appreciate what the staff do come up with even more! Have to give the proper shout outs to the staff that truly made us feel like we were welcome/at home - thank you for making our vacation so memorable! From the entertainment team, Skinny, Fines, Sparkles, Lady KK, Miguel, Big Wayne Eric at Olivettis - might be the most polite server we have ever had. Christopher at beach soccer who schooled my kids for hours one day Camilla, Shanty and Cassandra at the buffet - again polite, attentive Sasha at the spa gave a relaxing massage Akelia and Rhodell (sorry if that's spelled wrong?) from Star Club went above and beyond to ensure my kids were happy Leroy and Chad at SP beach Nicklaus at the smoke house Brandon my new concierge at Star Prestige who bent over backwards to do everything for us and checked on us every day V with dressel divers who convinced me to try scuba even if it's just in a pool! Thank you everyone <3 We will be back! Jess Aidyn and Ethan
