Good service in a great location
Had two nights in Auckland (weather was lousy). The Hilton sits in a great location, the breakfast is great, rooms nice (bathroom was huge) and the staff as helpful as you need them to be. Lobby area has a nice bar - on the Friday night we were there they had opera singers belting out their stuff, deffo different - and a fire was lit, so all very cosy. We'd happily stay there again.

First night in New Zealand
After a 13-hour flight, I arrived at the Ackland Hilton. It was conveniently near the cruise ship pier that I would leave from the next day. Excellent rooms and excellent restaurant. Good views from the hotel to the surrounding area. The New Zealand Maritime Museum is located close by.

Winner
I liked this property. It's in a great location - right at the end of the wharf. It's an easy walk to stores and restaurants and wharf tourism areas. The property is about a 30 minute drive to the airport. Uber costs around 50 to 60 and cars are always close by. The room was very comfortable and decent sized with a nice balcony. The bathroom was good - the A/C was excellent. The wifi was often unstable - so there's that. But the desk staff were great. Overall a good spot and a good stay - I'd return.

3 star at best
The lobby and first floor (restaurants, conference rooms, etc) are pretty nice especially at first glance. But upstairs where the guests actually stay are extremely dated and not up to European standards. If this was a Scandinavian or Dutch prison human rights activists would be up in arms. Just kidding. But apparently the owners of this establishment would have you believe that a grimy tiled wet-room from the 1980s or something is somehow a luxury bathroom. Harbour view as advertised is pretty good but then you can also see each of your neighbours’ loungers too. And then when a cruise ship docks next to your balcony it will obliterate your view — all you’ll see is a towering ship with everyone looking in to your room — zero privacy. Plus they’ll close the restaurant for a private function to host the cruise ship passengers. I guess that’s how they make their real money other than of course fleecing gullible tourists who are tricked by the supposed “quality” of the Hilton branding. Do not be fooled. Rooms are cold and dreary, aged blue carpets, dust and filth, the hairdryer is at least 40 years old and doesn’t work, shower fittings are dodgy and outdated, tiny little work desk, the list goes on. As I say this would be fine if they had advertised as a 4 star at best but if you really want 5 star I recommend the Park Hyatt or the Intercontinental. Only stay here if you want the full time-travel experience heading back to the future with Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Don’t normally write reviews but I’m used to the 5 star Kempinski / Ritz Carlton style of travel and Hilton Auckland was a huge huge let-down, I genuinely don’t want others to get burned with this rust bucket trying to pass itself off as luxury. Room service practically non-existent. QR code based service that doesn’t even work, you have to traipse up and down to the reception desk like an idiot every 5 mins when something else goes wrong. They don’t even clean your room unless you specifically ask for it. I don’t think this is necessarily a kiwi thing because I was actually born here and even I’m used to a higher standard. As I said, avoid, unless you want to 8-wire your way into insanity. The place is understaffed. However, Fish restaurant to be fair was alright. The main thing is I feel like I’ve been cheated here — there’s even a $200 walk-in price or something — they want to charge your card as soon as you walk in — and the whole thing is well below par and definitely not a 5 star hotel in any way shape or form. Take a tip from me and save yourself the hassle. All the best.

Go elsewhere
Just completed a 5 night stay on points, mixed feelings about this hotel. Room - no Diamond upgrade, but on top (8th) floor facing building on other side of the wharf. While room was a decent size, there was no storage space - no drawers, no closet, just one hook to hang up a few things, you would expect 5his in a Hampton inn or a holiday inn express. Shower door did not close properly and left a puddle on the floor even with the mat in place. Diamond recognition - none really, amenity of just 2 bottles of water. No executive lounge (knew this when booking). 25% dining discount. When I called reception to check on Diamond benefits I was offered 4 free drink vouchers, it seems they do not want to give anything unless you ask as these were not given at checkin, no letter as most if not all Hiltons usually have in my room listing diamond benefits at the hotel. Breakfast - diamonds get free continental breakfast which is quite substantial and includes Belgian waffles. $10 upcharge for the hot item buffet. We dined in at the bar (Bellini) one night, food was just okay and overpriced, used up our drink vouchers, but service was poor as we ordered our last 2 drinks when our food was delivered but it was more than 20 minutes later after we finished eating that I had to track down the waitress for our drinks (they take the drink vouchers from you at the time you order). Hotel also has an offer where by not getting your room serviced gets you $10 credit against food & beverage. We did this for 3 nights. On checkout they only gave $15 credit, I told the receptionist it should be $30, she redoes the invoice still only giving $25 - $5 against a coffee from the bar and $20 against the evening meal (which was over $50), got her to fix it to give the full $30 credit which she grudgingly gave as a “one time exception” If I am ever in Auckland again, the only way I would stay here again was if I needed the nights or stay to requalify for Diamond, otherwise I will stay elsewhere.
