    Gaia is The Best

This is the best restaurant in Fairmont, and by having a Diamond Status I know what I am talking about! The service is great, my favorite waiter Adan is so welcoming and friendly, that I had about 8 dinners from my two weeks vacation in this amazing place

Lovely resort, great value on inclusive plan

We had a 4 night stay over Thanksgiving in a Signature Casita on the all-inclusive plan. Overall, we had a really good time. I’m really glad we did the inclusive plan. The food at all venues was much better than I expected, but super expensive. Our dinners for two were in the $400 USD range, breakfasts over $100, with lunch/pool bills in the $150-250 range. That includes a lot of mezcalitas. But still. Our casita was number 236. A second floor unit at our request, one of the most private balconies in the resort, facing the Banyan Tree but only one single rooftop was visible. However, the “canal” was just a small tributary and hidden by trees. I found the room mostly very comfortable and in good condition. We had two butlers on different shifts, they were very responsive via WhatsApp, though I had made our dinner reservations in advance via OpenTable. That’s something everyone should do a few weeks in advance, especially during more crowded times. Oddly there were always empty tables at the restaurant venues even though they weren’t accepting additional reservations, so they clearly don’t have the staff to run them at capacity. Breakfast generally was at La Laguna inside, which was my least favorite venue/meal. The buffet was extensive and included some local specialties, but the restaurant is crowded, loud and full of kids. Actually the whole resort was full of kids, that was for us the worst part of the visit - there were very few couples evident. Three mornings they opened Bassano for breakfast as well to handle overflow, which we figured out the second morning. The room was much more pleasant, though still crowded. We were not big fans of the Las Olas pool complex. Again, crowded and full of kids. It was odd that the swim up bar was in this area in the main pool and not the adults-only pool. The adults-only pool area was okay, with decent service and a nice infinity edge over the mangroves, but the pool itself wasn’t heated and the vibe was kind of second fiddle to the bigger Las Olas pool. We loved the beachfront area. The beach at this area of Mayakoba is both long and wide so there were plenty of palapas and loungers for everyone who wanted them. The larger beach pool was beautiful but there was very little seating - Sunday after most folks left we were able to get a lovely spot in the shade for the day but earlier in the weekend it was mobbed. There were also three other small pools directly on the beach to the right of the main pool in front of the beach area casitas, I think they were free for anyone though I didn’t see anyone in them when I walked by. Whether at the beach or the pool the food was really good for beach food, and huge portions - ceviche, tacos, all the standards, but for the most part a step elevated. The drinks weren’t super strong but the friendly wait staff kept them coming. On arrival we had sushi at Hix while waiting for our room. First night we had a lovely seafood dinner beachfront at Gaia. Second night we ate fire grilled food on the beach itself at Fuego. Third night we had steak at Tauro. Last night we had Mexican food at La Laguna - nighttime on the deck by the canal was a wholly different experience than breakfast buffet inside. In general, we were highly impressed with our dinners. All were somewhat elevated - not Michelin quality but still very good and not at all run of the mill - though as mentioned before, without the inclusive plan we would have choked at the prices. And we’re used to DC/NYC pricing. We enjoyed pre-dinner rooftop cocktails at Cielo a couple of times. Lovely venue. It seems like they plan for much bigger crowds than were actually there, probably because of the family-heavy occupancy during our visit. We had no problem getting in and usually there were only a couple of other groups there. The inclusive liquor menu there and at all venues was fine, but the included wines by the glass were a little weak. The resort is big. We walked everywhere to get our steps in, though most folks took buggies down to the beach area. We enjoyed the activity. Definitely book the free boat ride through the mangroves with your butler, which gives you a nice view of some nature and the other Mayakoba properties. Not a perfect stay, but very good. We probably wouldn’t return mostly because the kid to adult ratio was a bit much for us, and we like to visit different places every time we travel. However, the resort is lovely and the value of the inclusive plan was extremely good given the high quality of the food.

    Boat tour through Mayakoba

The boat tour we took with Iker in Mayakoba was absolutely incredible! I highly recommend this activity if you’re staying at the Fairmont.
