It is a Motel
It is a motel. Not a resort or hotel. It appears to be a “Motel 6” type motel that was acquired, and superficial changes were made in an attempt to make it look like a boutique hotel. The room smelled musty. There were numerous fees during our stay to include a mandatory “resort” fee and parking fee. They recommended their shuttle downtown for a fee that included a free drink at their bar. When we tried to use the free drink vouchers, we were told that the voucher did not cover the drinks we ordered which were their current drink specials. We brought sandwiches and soda to the pool, and we were told by an employee that no outside food or beverages are allowed. This motel is expensive. Use your money more wisely than I did and stay somewhere else.

The Gates Key West Last Resort
The Gates Hotel is an old, refurbished hotel. It has been painted over and has installed “trend-like” interior designs like bathroom barn doors and faux wood floors, but it still has a stench of rot. Not sure where this oder comes from. My bathroom sink did not drain well so there may be water pipe issues—it’s anyone’s guess, but if you are sensitive to smells this place will make you vomit. My room had a really low platform bed—so beware if you plan to be physically active all day whether walking or water sports and need a supportive mattress for your back, the lowered platform mattress would only support children or short people, plus the roosters will wake you early. The hotel does have one set of earplugs for a guest on the bedside table. At check-in there was only one person working at small counter unit and this caused an extremely slow hotel check-in process and the line was backed up with people—and there was “drip” add-on resort fees and parking fee— it was observed nearly every guest had reservation discrepancies about price and there were hotel schemes. The hotel was poorly managed. The check-in should not impose upon paying hotel guests to just stand and wait what feels like forever! There is only one elevator. If you stay here expect “drip” add-ons and indecisive staff. We were charged to ride a trolley to Mallory Square, when at first we were told it was free. When the reservation was made online (take screen-grabs for evidential proof of your receipt) the photos looked good, but when the website was re-visited to look at photos later it read that some of the property photos were commissioned. It is a surreal experience because the property is not as photographed and then amenities are questionable. Just know, before you go.

Awful
Awful! Phone is broken in the room. Water in the sink, shower and toilet will not work. Woman was rude when we asked for assistance and we were told 30 minute wait, 30 minutes ago. You get what you pay for. We understand that problems happen, but we expect to be treated with respect and grace. Never again.
