Old, Grand, and Welcoming (and very close to the water)
El Cozumeleño is Old (built in 1974), and Grand (glorious Deco details), and very Welcoming. She is also right on the water. If you mostly value Modern Hotels with clean lines and new fixtures, she is NOT the hotel for you. But if you want a hotel full of character and heart, then read on. The main benefit of this hotel is its people--the bellmen, waiters, clerks, EVERYONE was friendly and helpful, earnestly so. They checked off our names when we went to town, then checked that we'd returned, so that if we went missing, they would know. Our ocean-front room was beautiful, with a view of the jungle forest and moon from the front walkway, a view of red-flowering Royal Poinciana trees and the sea through the arch at the end of the walkway, and a full view of the red flowers, sea, beach, and pools from our balcony, and an arch across the ceiling. The floor was a beautiful design of blue and white tiles. (The walk-in shower had painted tiles across it as well). The downstairs lobby area has a domed ceiling, a sweeping stairway (now cordoned off) with shelves of free books for exchange, a shop, and entry to their fine-dining restaurant (which we didn't try) -- beyond that is the pool and, immediately, the seaside. THIS is my favorite part of El Cozumeleño--just LOOK at it! It is right on the beach, unlike so many resorts that require a long hike to get to the actual water. Enter from the narrow but main BEACH, for the best footing -- this is, after all, Cozumel, and everything is rocky. We snorkeled right off the beach; no coral right there, but fun fish, all the same. (We were told that if we walked south toward the Westin's beach to snorkel, the current would bring us back). I loved lounging on a beach chair, with the sound of the surf on the beach to one side and the splash-gurgle of the waves against the rock wall to the other. The hotel provides snorkel gear, double-kayaks, and even wave runners. My roommate and I ate at their standard restaurant (El Cocal) for every meal. While some claim that the food is bad, it's not -- but you could claim that it's plain. The steak fajitas are STEAK, onions, bell peppers, and tortillas (you can request cheese etc.) without a lot of extra sauces or additions. The chicken is straight chicken. The fish is sea bass (try the Cilantro fish!) My friend can be a fastidious companion when it comes to eating out, because she is allergic to so many additives, but the food at El Cozumeleño caused her not a single problem. Almost all the downfalls of El Coz come from its age. Old does start to look dirty in places, though we found no dirt/mold/etc. We had to ask for help getting our safe door open (they give you a key, but ours stuck) and to fix a lamp bulb. We had to be careful when flushing the toilet, so as not to pull off the handle. None of that bothered us--it was part of the character. BEWARE of slippery floors--especially in our room, those beautiful tiles became icy slick when they got wet, but wearing our flip-flops (with tread) solved the problem. I usually travel to Cozumel via Apple Vacations, since flights and transportation are included in the package. They rarely offer last minute deals featuring El Coz... but I'll watch for them from now on. This is the hotel I want to frequent.
We’ll be back!
Honest review here. We just left. It was wonderful for our family! If you’re looking for a party crowd, this probably isn’t your place and if you’re looking for a 5 star resort, this probably isn’t it either. The staff are incredible!!! Randy, Cristian, Julian, Cesar were so incredibly nice to my family of 4. The pools were great, the beach, water and snorkelling were all amazing! Food was good. We all found something to eat every meal and many snacks in between. I will say that I was shocked that it was al la carte and not a buffet. There was also no swim up bar which was a little disappointing, but not a deal breaker, especially since the staff were so attentive. Overall, my husband, two kids (10&13) and I will definitely be coming back!
We had an absolute blast. The bad reviews must have been from picky people because we have no bad things to say. The food was good, there are people everywhere cleaning and making sure everyone has what they need. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Beaches were beautiful, waters were clear and great for snorkeling.
Worst Hotel On The Island
The staff are the only reason we did not leave the 2nd day. Food was horrible. Very limited items to pick from and was the same the entire 10 days. Ate out at least one meal a day. Found cockroaches in our room two times. They would say they were sending someone to spray. (never in 20 years of going to Mexico have I had one in my room let alone 2) A/C never worked. They had it locked so the temp would not go below 74. Spoke to the front desk numerous times regarding it. Pool with swim up bar was soo dirty all the time. Very cloudy and could not see the bottom. Menu's are all by QR code, however you can barely get it pulled up as there is no wifi service anywhere except the lobby and if that is busy good luck. Only good thing this place has going for it is the staff. They go above and beyond trying to make you happy and help you. We have been coming to Cozumel for the last 8 years and will not be returning to this hotel again.
A lovely property for couples and families.
This is a nice hotel that meets the needs of a traveler who doesn’t mind a room without all the frills, but has all the necessities. The staff is lovely, and took good care of us. Especially Santiago, who ensured my partner and I had a good room with a king sized bed. Sylvia on the patio bar was an absolute delight. She helped with my Spanish, and gave tips on how to save money and make the most of our stay. The beach is fabulous and has awesome snorkeling. Snorkeling equipment and sun tan lotion are free and the pools were nice. For a family or couple looking for a place with beautiful quiet waters, a peaceful grounds, and warm friendly faces, Cozumeleno is the place to be! They are making welcome updates to the hotel, and we look forward to visiting again to see what’s in store for this fine property.
