Feb 26, 2026Disappointing end to the trip
This was definitely a disappointing end to our trip in China after the generally exceptional service we had received at our previous IHG hotel stays. Nothing can make up for being assigned to a room where the basic bathroom functions such as toilet flushing and hot and cold taps do not work effectively. The solution of being expected to move rooms when we have three young children, are out of the hotel most of the time, and are in the midst of sorting everything out for the flight home is not viable. The room assignment should not have been made to any guest, let alone one with Platinum Elite status. On review, it seems that this hotel is resting on its laurels and relying on its reputation and theming to cover for a product that would not up to Crowne Plaza standards elsewhere. The smell of cigarettes hang in the hallway although the rooms were on a non-smoking floor. The buffet breakfast was plain and basic for this standard of hotel. The port cochere with vehicles passing was hazardous for people trying to get to and from the lobby given the flawed design, particularly with a specific smoking area in the main thoroughfare. There are literally thousands of options in Shanghai, and many in this area, so do not settle for this tired overhyped property.

Hotel is great. Clean and comfortable. Restaurants are all good, and staffs were wonderful. Room attendant, 王海涛was excellent helpful and friendly. And at morning breakfast, all staffs were very dedicated and friendly, particularly Jack Jai, Jeremy Dong, Martin Liu and many others will i don't get too get their names. Staffs are all very well trained and polite. Thank you to the whole team, fire making my stay so pleasant, smooth, and enjoyable. I was in room 1504 during my stay.

I booked with my IHG points and was kindly upgraded to a movie theme room by the guest service manager. Not a new property but if you manage to get a renovated room dating from few years already it is a good option. Very reactive staff when you send email to prepare your stay.

A home from home
This is a civilised, friendly hotel whose main aim is to make you feel comfortable and welcome. Many thanks must go to Hotel Services Mgr. Gert van Beek. Gert's tireless, personable presence in the hotel lobby was always a treat. He, and the team, have inculcated an informal, helpful and informative ambiance across the hotel. He's also a very handy European portal into the dynamic world of Shanghai. His knowledge, insight and guidance - having spent over 20 years in the Chinese hotel industry - his tril-lingualism, including Mandarin - all supports his laid-back but efficient style. It's not just Gert either. His fellow staff members have a similar ethos. Hard-working, cheerful and available, they all helped to make this a memorable stay. I've stayed in hotels similar in rank in SEAsia but nothing comes even close to this experience. A problem with plumbing at 2am brought, almost immediately, an engineer and assistant who sorted it out promptly without fuss. The food is superb and the extensive breakfast buffet was a joy. Our room, a suite, was super-comfy. Gert's philosophy is to create a home from home. And this is what they achieved. Our trip took place during the Shanghai International Film Festival which is centred on this hotel.

Good midrange offer in great location.
I really like this place and its location. It’s about 7mins walk from Jiaotong University and surrounded by an eclectic range of F&B outlets. Quite a cosmopolitan district and a short walk or taxi ride into the heart of the heritage district that is the French Concession property. The hotel itself is well presented, not old but not new either. A solid midrange offer. Has outdoor pool I recall and a sort of club lounge which is basically just a common room with complementary soft drinks and beer. The breakfast buffet is pretty decent. I think we stayed here 3x this year and will probably double that by the year end.
