3 and a half stars
This hotel is neither average nor very good, hence the 3 and a half star rating. The good: The grounds and pool are excellent. I really like the care given to nature and wildlife around the hotel. The hotel itself isn’t massive and has a good vibe about it. The food is good as is the choice of restaurants. I wouldn’t describe it as excellent but there is good variety. Some of the staff work very hard, particularly the ground staff and bar staff. The not so good: I’ll start with the rooms. The rooms themselves are adequate. We only sleep in there so all we want is a decent bed, decent AC and a decent shower. Unfortunately the only thing good is the bed. We’ve struggled with the others. We have moved rooms because the first room we had AC that sounded like a 60’s diesel engine and just didn’t work. Before moving we asked to see the other rooms, we discovered the ac is pretty rubbish in all rooms and there’s pretty much no difference between any of the rooms, either privileged or otherwise. We did move and whilst I would describe the AC as cooler, it’s not cold and can’t seem to get the room below 24. The other issue is the shower, it’s just a trickle. All of this has been reported and whilst engineers come out, I think the issue is with the wider hotel systems that just need investment. Other issues are around a lack of staff. Service can be really hit and miss but when there’s only 2 staff on the swim up bar and 2 staff on the pool/beach bar they really have no chance and thus massive queues form. It’s not helped that the soda machine is never working either which would take the strain off the pool/beach bar. There’s also next to no waiter service. We are privileged but all that gets you is breakfast in beloved. The service is really intermittent in here. Sometimes excellent but we also walked out because we couldn’t even get drinks to the table one lunch time. Tipping doesn’t seem to make any difference. Food carts are another issue. They are all excellent however a nightmare. The pizza guy will make pizza which are gone in 5 mins. But rather than keep them making them, he will wait til they are all empty and then slowly make more. The end result being queues to get pizza. The other carts will also run out of ingredients as the day goes on meaning you can’t get most foods after 2. All of these issues alone are pretty minor but they really detract from this being a ‘very good’ or excellent hotel. And when it’s at the price point it is, you expect much better. I’ve had a very relaxing vacation but I won’t return. We stayed at a dreams in punta Cana last Memorial Day and there really is no comparison.

Amazing authentic Mexican Resort.
This was our first in Mexico and our first time at an all inclusive. We were BEYOND pleased with the Catalonia Playa Maroma. Everything was amazing. The food was delicious and there were soooo many options. There was everything you could want at the buffet, we even had a Mexican night which was amazing. They have 3 a la carte restaurants on the resort which are by reservation. We booked a dinner at the Toscana Italian restaurant and the food was really good but we honestly preferred the buffet. The drinks were more than spectacular. We drank everything from mojitos to margaritas and cerveas. The Aromas Cafe is were we drank our afternoon and evening coffees. The latte and cappuccinos are to die for. The staff in all areas of the resort were so friendly and handled all of our requests immediately. The pool was very clean and spacious, with a lot of shade. You did have to get to the pool early to grab a good sunbed with shade but it was no problem for us because of we were always at the pool by 9am. The beach was probably the best part of the resort (other than the food). The only issue we had with the beach was the seaweed (sarggassum) which flooded the beach on the first 2 days. You couldn't even get in the water from all of it but on the third day it started to clear up and by day 5 the water was crystal clear. The sand is white soft sand, the best I've ever seen. The water is the perfect temperature of warm and cold if you go a little deeper. This is definitely a family friendly resort. If you are looking to party or listen to music late into the night you won't find this here. They did have music in the lobby every night but that would be done by 9 to 10pm. They also had entertainment in the theatre every night which was so fun to watch with our two year old. Overall we enjoyed our stay so much and we would definitely recommend this resort to everyone.

Catalonia Playa Maroma
The resort was awesome. The coati were great. Look them up. The food was really good from the buffet to the themed restaurants. Even the food carts had some pretty decent dishes. The beach was really nice and you're right between 5th Avenue and cancun so your have plenty of options. This is a resort within a forest so there are plenty of trees and there is plenty of wildlife, like the coati. First time in Mexico, but I'm already planning my next time.

Great stay!
We really enjoyed Catalonia Playa Maroma. Hobbie Cats(catamarans) are included without additional cost and we enjoyed that daily! They also have kayaks. The food we really enjoyed, but you need to make reservations, except for the main buffet. The desserts were better than most other all-inclusive resorts. Monkeys and other wildlife are seen throughout the nature preserve in the property. Natural ‘made to order’ smoothies made our stay super enjoyable and excellent cappuccinos, were a plus. The mango margaritas tasted like Bellinis. They also offer crepes, which are not normally offered at other resorts. The room was tastefully decorated, Bathroom very nice, bed was comfortable and AC worked well. Palapas, plenty of beach chairs; Hammocks; Service was great. Beach was great even though seaweed was much a couple of days because of the strong current. The other days the beach was pristine and beautiful. The days that the current is strong the seaweed is bad all over this area regardless of the resort. Secrets Resort is nextdoor, it’s 3 times as expensive and it has just as much seaweed on the days that the current was strong. Both resorts have machines to rake it off. Even considering this, the views from beach chairs to the ocean horizon with nice breeze is priceless. Overall I give this resort 5 stars. I hope we can come back to enjoy more in the future.
