The Palace is still a fine hotel, but could use some updating and improvements.
We chose to return to the Barcelo Maya Palace because we had such a good experience the last time we stayed here in January 2020. The property is massive especially now with the addition of the Riviera adults-only property. The landscaping is beautiful and the walking paths are covered and easily accessible for bringing you from one section to another. We had a roomy Junior Suite with a nice couch seating area and comfortable king bed. Housekeeping did a good job of cleaning whenever we asked for service. The best part of this resort are the people who work there! Everyone is very friendly and does his/her/their best to make guests feel welcomed! Tomas C., in the Premium Lounge, was extremely friendly and helpful and made a point of remembering my name which I really appreciated! At El Cielo Bar, Dilery R, Didier H, Rosa R, and Porforio P looked after all of our drinks and towels, and cabana bookings. They treated us like VIP's and make our time at the pool a lot of fun! It was a pleasure speaking to Endrick N., one of the managers who came by often to make sure everything was in tip-top shape and that guests were happy! Dinner at Caribé Restaurant was great. I really liked the fresh salad bar! The coconut shrimp and lobster were both excellent! Carlos and Mario made a good tandem team that made sure we got great service! The Brasserie French restaurant was still as good as I remembered it. The plating was beautiful and the food was very well prepared. The Île Flottante is one of my favourite desserts! Miguel P. and Marco C. were excellent hosts and came by often to make sure everything was good. Our favourite restaurant this time around was Rodizio! We had the good fortune of dining there one evening when the Mariachi band came in to entertain the guests. They were fantastic and really livened up the room! The food is amazing, especially the Spaghetti Bolognese, entrecote, and rib eye! Our hosts, Juan and Gilberto, were excellent and really made our experience memorable! We recognized another server, Bredy B., who was at the Caribé Restaurant when we last came to this resort in 2020. He finished our meal with his amazing Mayan Coffee show which I highly recommend. Bredy is certain THE MASTER at this and really makes pouring coffee an artform! Unfortunately, not everything was perfect, and there were a few things which knocked this review down from 5/5 to only 4/5. 1. We had few problems with our room. a. The air conditioner didn't work and needed to be serviced twice before it worked properly. Even after it was fixed, it did a very poor job of dehumidifying the room (if at all) and the room was musty and everything felt damp. b. The switch to change from shower to bath was broken and had to be fixed. c. My phone did not properly work and had to be fixed. d. Some of the buttons on the safe didn't work so I had to make up some weird PIN that only used 4 of the 6 working digits. I was told I needed to call security to fix it so I left it. e. There is a WiFi router mounted on the wall next to the bed with a VERY BRIGHT green light which blinks all of the time and is extremely distracting when you are trying to sleep. f. Housekeeping was inconsistent in replacing towels. I was missing face cloths when I arrived so I asked for two which were delivered. After I had housekeeping, I was left with only one hand towel and no face towels and had to call to get the right amount. Why can't they just replace what they take with new ones? g. I had to call multiple times to get things fixed. In the past, I called once and things would be fixed by the time I returned to the room. Not this time. 2. Although there was a good variety of food and drinks at the buffet restaurants, I feel that Barcelo has definitely downgraded the food at the Palace compared to what they used to serve prior to the opening of the Riviera adult-only premium hotel. They used to serve lobster and high-end meats during dinner service, but all of that seems to have gone missing. We spoke with some other people who were staying at the Riviera and they said that their buffets did have those higher-end offerings. I don't appreciate that Barcelo has made the Palace less premium in order to bolster the Riviera's reputation, especially since the Palace is definitely NOT cheap to stay at. But overall, we still had a good time. The rooms could use some updating and the food at the buffets could be improved. But the warm and friendly staff still make staying at the Palace a great experience!

Barcelo Maya Palace vacation
We had a blast playing volleyball on the beach with Carlos by the Palace. We had excellent service, fun atmosphere, and outstanding supper experiences at the Toko, Barzerrie, and Rodizio, and Italian places. Highly recommended

Friendliest staff!
This was our fourth visit to Barcelo Maya Palace. The staff are so cheerful, encouraging, friendly and helpful. One thing that I really enjoyed was practicing my Spanish. While I didn’t need to know it at this resort, everyone was always so helpful and patient as I tried constructing sentences. A few people who really stood out were Carme Sánchez Lidia Ramirez at the breakfast buffets Maria Pérez at the lobby Luis (Kiki) Perez at the Fitness Center Porfino, Francisco & Alejandra at Cielo pool Each of these sweet people went out of their way to make our stay so enjoyable. One discouraging thing on this visit was the lack of face cloths that used to be provided in the rooms.
