No salt, no tajin, no beef, no chicken
Have been to the Barcelo resort more than 25 time and always a great experience. Today, 6/5/23 we attempted to order drinks with salt on rim at pool bar & they were out of salt. No big deal, ordered drink with Tajin. No tajin. So we go to the palapa next door to get food and we will drink later. No hamburger, no chicken, no beef. I think there may be a COVID shortage again. Oh, also no limes. WHAT??? We are in Mexico.

The Pros and Cons of Barcelo Maya Beach
We just came from a one week vacation in Barcelo Maya Beach. Here are the highlights: Pros The resort is very highly maintained and is supper beautiful. The attention to the details in terms of landscaping is remarkable. The beach was phenomenal The pool is great The speciality resrurants (Italian, Spanish and Japanese) are great The water park was so much fun The dolphin show was great The cons The buffet food was not great in terms of quality. Variety is there but quality is very lacking (bread is old and crumbling, chicken salty, juices are awful... The speciality resrurant (Mexican) bad service and the food is a joke (Ironically) Staff at reception lack the knowledge about many resort related questions. Instead of directing us to guest services, they provided incorrect information Communication is a big issue. When reception staff or guest services staff dont understand what you are asking, they make you think that they understood and then you find out that they did not. They need to be instructed to say that they do not understand rather than 1) giving the incorrect answer or 2) make you think that they understood Customer service needs serious improvements. The check in at the reception takes so much time. Sometimes there is a big line up and only one person at the reception and they are very slow. Other reception staff passby and dont offer to take the next person in line Genrally, it is time consuming to complete a request or a service due to communication issues, effeciency and speed There also seems to be attitude problems with some staff. Namely the person at the paid water park area. The person there (male) completed the registration and after we completed and signed the forms, he informed us that we need pay by credit card. He should have checked the system to find out of the credit card was there or not first before having us go through the long check in process / forms completion. When we pointed this out, they were clearly not happy/friendly instead of acknowledging their process needs improvement Despite the cons, we made the best of this experience and enjoyed the beach, the pool and the speciality restaurants

Get what you pay for!
Buffet food is lacking to say the least!! Sri is not good! Not enough employees at the bars and buffets! Resort, pools, rooms are very nice! Resort needs to work on improving food for sure and drink quality

Terrible experience - STAY AWAY
We recently stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach as a large group. CHECK-IN/OUT - Check-in experience was a disaster -huge line ups and not enough staff. When we finally got to the desk, we were told that our keys would be available at 4:30 - when we returned at that time we had to wait another 1.5 hrs to get our room keys because the service was so slow. Checking out also takes time so if you are under a tight timeframe (like a bus picking you up at a certain time), make sure you leave ample time to check out as service is slow and depending on how many others are checking out, you could be waiting in line for 20-30 mins. They will NOT let you leave without checking out and cutting your bracelet. FOOD - We found that the food at the buffet is substandard compared to all the other Caribbean resorts that we've stayed at. The buffet restaurants themselves are large to accommodate but the food selection was dismal to say the least. Having rows and rows of sliced processed meats, sliced cheeses and extremely salty dishes did not give us a lot of good options. Japanese &Italian a la cart restaurants were decent. The Spanish, La Fuente, had a pitiful salad bar which was half empty and not restocked during our dinner. Snacks from the gift shop are v expensive - a bag of chips is $16-20USD - so make sure you bring your own from home. STAFF/Service: Many staff members could not speak English which made it very frustrating for us to navigate - the staff at front desk who was checking us in, could not understand us when we asked for "two rooms close together if possible" so that I can be near my elderly mother who travelled with us. The girl in Guest Services did not speak ANY AT ALL and had to use google translate to communicate with us. She was the only staff that was in the office to book our a la cart restaurants so we could not book our a la carte restaurants without going through her. The other 2 staff members that I spoke to, to book spa services also could not speak English. I pointed to the massage svcs that I wanted and they could not tell me if there was any availability for the entire week I was there. They just kept telling me that it was all booked up. I only found out on the day i was leaving, that water therapies were available everyday as they accepted same day resos. CLEANLINESS: Rooms were sporadically cleaned -our room leaked every time it rained - we had to lay towels on floor. Main pool is warm/dirty -no relief from hot sun

SCAM ALERT, HORRID CUSTOMER SERVICE
Absolutely terrible experience. These reviews on Trip Advisor must be bought/tampered with because this resort is 3 1/2 stars 🌟 on Delta Vacations. There is no shuttle and the receptionist told me I had to arrange it through my travel agency which is a lie. I bought an all-inclusive, R/T shuttle through the hotel with air fare. Then they tried to charge me an extra fee when I arrived to the hotel. Never received a receipt for said fee. I guess they just pocketed the money. Then when I arrived the key and machine didn't work so I had to wait 3 hours for them to figure that out. The maintenance guy wouldn't return any calls. No apology, no upgrade, just rude people who thought it was my responsibility to run back and forth from the front desk. Rooms are old and the resort is run down. I would not recommend this resort to ANYONE! I'll be back to update with quality of food and activities.
