    Recent visit to Occidental Cozumel

This will probably be my 30th or so review, so apologies for the length but I want to do my best to share as accurately as possible from someone who has done this alot over 30 years, as it's what I like to see in a review as well. First time at an AI in Cozumel. Usually stay at condos north of town. Arrive at Cozumel airport. LOVE! 5 minutes off plane and already at Diego's tacos. $80USD taxi ride for 8 to Occidental Cozumel (OC) Arrive at OC. Check in is way too long. You've had my reservation for months. It should not take an hour! Rooms are fine but my first "flag" I've learned over the years. 3 of the 4 rooms the AC was fine. Room 1115 did not work and was never fixed. Perhaps the resort didn't realize I could compare my room to others, but I could. First day I asked to be looked at. Nothing. Second day became a little more animated about a fix and waited for maintenence to arrive and said it was fixed and it wasn't. Third day bitched about it and still nothing done so I gave up. However, this is a FLAG! When you won't fix or move me from a hot/humid room after three chances, I assume that is typically how all issues will be handled, so for this reason alone we will not be back to OC as I assume that's the level or concern for the next issue as well. Food is fine. Nothing special. Nothing poor. I will say I have never waited in line so much to enter a buffet or to get food from the line. Having 30 people in line for breakfast was odd but the norm. No need to do the reservation restaurants. they will figth you to make it hard to reserve and the food is very similar to the buffet, so why go to all the trouble. Instead go to town for 1 or 2 nights and enjoy local. Bars are fine Pool and Beach are fine. The pics of the beach ARE NOT accruate, but there is still plenty of sand and charis to accomodate everyone. Water is calm and plenty of snorkeling available right there Not a reef but weed beds full of enough stuff to kee everyone busy. Smaller resort so not a ton fo extra things to do, but not a ton of walking required either. Used the gym and it was adequate. Shows are far different than a larger report. Small acts done in front of 50 people seated in plastic lawn chairs with no bar. Just far less than you will see at larger resorts with an amphitheater, etc. You are in a jungle here, so when it's humid, it's really humid. Not as much breeze gets inside, but not a huge deal either way. To me better than cleared area of just grass, but note. Never bothered by animals or anything. Taxis are one way 40USD to center of town and 80USD to airport. So double for round trip so it can really add up if going often. $5USD per person to use their dock to load for excursions which I wasn't made aware of. That too can add up if doing them but still far less than paying to get taxi to marina, etc. Just would seem to be a perk of staying, but it does cost.

    Avoid this resort!

This was our third visit to this resort in the last 6 years and what a huge disappointment! The food wad mediocre at best with limited selection. The “ribeye” steaks needed to be cut with a chainsaw and fresh seafood is virtually nonexistent. The beach is badly eroded and does not look anything like the photos posted on the hotel website. We always stay in the Royal level however young kids playing in the jacuzzi tub and screaming at night was annoying. This evening we were 15 minutes late for a dinner reservation at the Mediterranean restaurant but were denied seating by Lucio and Noemy despite the restaurant being half empty. They were both dismissive so I went to speak the the manager on duty Odalys who was completely unhelpful and equally unsympathetic. Needless to say we will not return to this resort or recommend it to others. Spend your money elsewhere where they value customer loyalty.

    50th wedding anniversary

We arrived two hours late and upon check in we were told our room was not ready, we requested a room with king size bed got a room with two doubles plus the floors were gritty with dirt and tub was not cleaned and sheets were still damp we had no safe or fridge. next day we got our room that we requested with fridge and safe, then we were told we were asking for to much. i also requested for facecloths and told you only het them if you are royal club, finally after two days we received two. no matter where we ate the food was always cold, the Occidental has changed since our last visit.

    Occidental Grand is Home

As always Occidental Grand Cozumel was superb. This trip we brought friends who were new to the resort and they couldn’t say enough positive things about the experience. The staff were so warm friendly and accommodating. Especially Jasmine and Rogelio and their crews in La Careta! Jesus and his crew including Raul were instrumental in making the trip for our 6 year old granddaughter and our Son in law during their stay in the second week. Of course we made a few trips to the spa ourselves and booked treatments for our guests. As always Erika, Liseth and Yadi gave us the superb experiences we expect. These ladies are just the best. We welcome the new receptionist Leydi! Of course we can’t forget to mention Alexandra and Odalys who took care of our every need in our Royal Level rooms. Alberto in the first club made sure we all had fun at our members party;despite the rain we enjoyed the entertainment!

    Sad and want to help.

The staff and experience here was fantastic. However, I was part of a resuscitative effort that occurred on the beach of a man that either had a sudden cardiac event or other emergency in which we did CPR for at least 25 minutes prior to EMS arrival. I called for an AED several times and the staff said they didn't have one. When EMS arrived, they had a 30 year old cardiac monitor with paddles and no disposable defibrillation pads. I was shocked that our neighbor to the South was so ill-iquipped for emergencies. In talking with the resort staff I learned that none of the resorts in Cozumel have AEDs which concerns me greatly. I want to help but don't know how. These resorts make thousands of dollars a day and don't have first world supplies or education for their visitors. Willing to help but don't know how. Greg Wolf
