Don’t go
I used to love the Dominican, and the people here. It sure has changed. No one smiles anymore, and the staff socialize more than they help. My mom and I requested a room with two beds. We were checked in and told we had a king bed. Thankfully, we were able to switch, we just had to wait a few hours while the room was prepared - no problem, we got changed and headed to the pool and the beach. What is strange is that the only other option than a king bed is two singles. We discovered as we headed to the beach that there is a party boat business next door to the resort that isn’t mentioned anywhere. It is LOUD and often multiple boats are playing conflicting music. Plus the smell of gas/diesel overwhelms the smell of the ocean. When we got to our room, the toiletries were not restocked, there was only one robe and one towel (even though there were two single beds). The beds were made up with sheets only - no blankets. The concierge showing us to our room had to get rid of cockroach #1. In the bathroom, there was no bar of soap, just shower gel and (minimal) hand soap. But no washcloths to use with the shower gel. If you’ve ever tried to use shower gel without a wash cloth, you know it is useless to actually clean anything. We called to request blankets, more pillows, two more towels, hand soap and one more robe. The towels and robes arrived first (after 2 phone calls) and we were assured the rest would come in 10-15minutes. 30minutes later we gave up and went to dinner. While we were there, the blankets and pillows were delivered. No soap though. The next day, we still didn’t get more soap. Not even during daily housekeeping. I called twice more and asked at the front desk. Still none by the time we went to bed. We were also advised (by staff) that we could buy a bar of soap in the gift shop - for $7USD!!! I got rid of cockroach #2 today. On day 3, we finally got more hand soap (yay)! And we killed cockroach #3 as well. We were told that this is to be expected in a tropical country, but we have visited many other tropical countries (Cuba, Guyana, DR, and a Jamaica) and never encountered one before. On day 4, the wind was so crazy at the beach we stayed at the pool. After being at the pool for 2hrs, someone rented the cabana/bed beside where we were sitting in our sun loungers. I was asked to move, despite not being in the bed space, but rather on the regular pavement. I felt this was rather rude as we were not in the sun lounger’s space and had already been there for 2hrs. The resort has policies that are a “first come” basis, but they don’t honour that. They also have rules about smoking around the pool, speakers being used, and 30min limits on unoccupied loungers - none of which are enforced. For several days, we sat ourselves at the buffet and had to flag down random waiters to get water or cutlery, and never had the same server help us twice. We did however see lots of severs standing around, and talking with each other. There was a large group at the resort at the same time as us (10-15) who had multiple servers waiting on them, while we sat at our table with dirty dishes and empty glasses - for breakfast, lunch, and dinner services at the buffet. They would run out of certain items at the buffet quickly, and not replenish them. We kept being told “someone else will get it”. Save your money, book somewhere else.

No chocolate, no ability to dine with family on family side
We returned to this hotel this year and were very disappointed: 1. Chocolate free zone. There were no chocolate deserts this year for the entirety of our 6 day stay. Last year there was plenty. Clearly management value engineered out the chocolate due to cost. Overall, the desert selection was lacking. 2. You can't use the facilities at the family property even though they are not physically separated and no reasonable upcharge / solution was offered to get around this. This created all kinds of drama and stress as half our family was in the family section and the other half was in the adult section. 3. Hokkaido restaurant. This place was my least favorite restaurant and unlike the others you had to pay for it.

Relaxing Stay
My wife and I went to Melia Beach Resort with seven friends, we stayed at the Level Garden Suite by Staywell for three nights. The resort is beautiful and very well maintained. All the staff were very friendly, with the exception of the tall bartender at the barefoot bar. We got drinks then got food at the grill 20 feet away and sat at the bar to eat. We were told in a not so friendly way, we could not eat at the bar. There were tables five feet behind us that we were permitted to eat at. The tall bartender made sure to tell us to take our dishes when we were leaving. He ruined that experience. Our concierge's Jorge and Maxwell were great and very helpful with reservations and having a birthday cake ready for my wife at dinner. I enjoyed all of the food and drinks. Our room was beautiful, our room attendant did a very good job. My wife got two massages and said they were excellent, I went in the sauna and the pool at the spa and enjoyed every minute. The spa is very clean and the staff were great. The level roof top bar is amazing, great view with excellent bartenders, well worth the extra cost for Level by itself. The only downside - was an upcharge for Corona - $4.50, upcharge for the hibachi grill, $59 a person. I wish resorts could figure out a way to prevent chair hogs, it was like a game. By 8am all the chairs around the pool were "taken", reserved with a towel and a hat or flip flops. Most of the time it was hours before they showed up to use the chairs. My wife and I both agreed we would come back to Melia in the future and recommend it for those looking for a relaxing vacation.
