Beautiful grounds, view and location for the airport

Great location for SJO airport-only 15 mins. Beautiful location with fab garden and golf course. Hotel is old and needs a refurb. Check in was painfully slow as was room service. Staff not so helpful either. Great place to chill. There’s a small mall 5 mins walk away with good restaurants and a supermarket .

    Good, and bad

Pros - Wonderful hotel with its design steeped in Costa Rican culture. Fantastic executive lounge for breakfast and dinner. Friendly staff, especially Caleb, the guest relations manager, who went above and beyond to address the delay with the shuttle. Cons - The airport shuttle runs every 2 hours, which is plain inadequate, for a top-tier hotel that is barely 10 mins away. We had to wait for over 35 mins. We saw other Marriott and Hiltons shuttles there on multiple pickup trips while we were waiting.

Close to San Jose, but feels private

A great Marriott close to San Jose airport. We used this as a jump off spot to get in and out of the airport and it was perfect. Built on an old coffee plantation, it has private grounds, a pool and excursions to local areas. We enjoyed the Doka Coffee plantation tour with the Poas Volcano and waterfalls hiking, and were very pleased with Swiss Tours. Staff at the Executive Lounge are warm and helpful, making excellent suggestions and personalizing our stay. The staff have mastered the art of calm efficiency - everything is well designed and planned.

    Try another hotel instead.

I do not understand the extensive positive reviews. I have stayed in this hotel twice, and I found it to be passable (with one exception), but not great. The first stay was in June 2024 for 7 nights, the second in November 2024 for 4 nights. My first stay was extraordinarily loud. The birds wake you up every morning around 5:00 am, the bar patrons keep you up until at least 11pm, as the sound echoes off the pool. My second stay was quieter (facing the spa instead of the pool) but I could still hear everything happening in the hall, and the cleaning staff talk to each other at top decibel every morning. If an onsite event is in progress, or a tour group shows up, the sound level is ridiculous. I believe this is an ongoing complaint because when I checked out, staff asked if I was happy with everything and, when I didn’t say yes, they immediately asked if it was too loud. The food at the onsite restaurants is not very good at any of them, and is overpriced, though the ambiance is lovely. Service is hot or miss. The staff is lovely, but there are issues. For example, one morning I ordered French toast and specifically asked that it be well done, and not squishy. It took 35 minutes for my plate to arrive, with few people in the restaurant, and the plate was literally wet bread because there was a layer of milk or melted whip cream under the bread. It was disgusting. The waiter noticed an offered to have it re-made. I was reluctant due to the time it took for the first plate, but the second plate came out in 15 minutes and a much better state. The waiter also brought a complimentary plate of fruit and apologized for the wait and the first plate. So they do try to make things right. Another morning I placed an order for pickup. The order included juice and tea. I had a conversation with the person who took the order regarding the different tea options, but when I got to my room, neither was included with the order. However, if you walk to the main road (C. Arbolito), turn right, and walk approximately 150m, there are several decent restaurants to choose from. On the second morning of my second stay, I opened the mini fridge, and a live roach was scurrying around inside. I screamed the obligatory scream, and slammed the door, but I wasn’t sure if I was fast enough, so spent the rest of the trip thinking I was seeing roaches when a shadow moved. I left Housekeeping a note asking them to remove the food from the refrigerator since I wasn’t going to eat anything that had been in there, but I didn’t want to move it to the trash and attract additional pests. When I returned to the room, the staff had removed everything and brought a new mini fridge to the room with two bottles of water and a note indicating food show not have been stored in the original refrigerator. Toiletries are minimal (soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, shower cap, and mouth wash randomly showed up one day), and are not single use, but bolted to the wall with pumps that spit out tiny streams of product, so you have to pump 6 times to get one “normal” pump worth. The hair dryer has clearly been dropped and abused, and as a result, the molded pieces had a gap, so when the hair dryer was running my hair kept getting sucked inside the gap into the impeller. The rooms seemed fairly clean, however, there was a bot of mold in the shower, and I had to run about eight cups of water through the coffee machine before the water ran clear. The spa is okay, but they charging resort prices (not worth the price charged for the level of quality and service). I had a body scrub, massage, and pedicure. All were fine. Neither the best or the worst I have ever had. I bought some of the body oil in the spa, and I had a reaction to it, but I do have sensitive skin, so it might be fine for others. During the second stay the hotel had an issue with systems being down, which lasted nearly 24 hours (no keys could be made, and no WiFi). Each time a guest who checked in while the system was down wanted to re-enter their room, they had to go to the front desk and ask to be let back in. It was a pain, but unlikely this will happen on a regular basis. Employees communicated well in English and all of them were quite friendly and helpful. During my next trip, I might try the sister AC Marriot hotel down the road, which I am told is more modern. I don’t plan to stay here again. There are just too many experiences on the negative side. No bueno. Not Pura Vida.

    A truly great hotel

I have stayed at this hotel so many times over the years. A great place so close to the airport yet in a wonderful tranquil environment. One of my favourite hotels in the world. Great staff comfortable rooms and excellent bars. Xiamora and the other bar staff always have smiles. I highly recommend it.
