A great local hotel in sleepy Hilo town.

What a good night's sleep I got here! It's been over 10+ years since I last stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in sleepy Hilo town. Yes, at night in Hilo, you can probably hear the lovely sounds of the croqui frogs. Some folks don't like the noise, but as for Bruddah man, I don't mind it at all. When I pulled into the hotel parking lot (in the early evening), I could hear the chirping noises of the croqui frogs. As for my accommodations - My hotel room was nice & comfy. Looks like the Hilo Hawaiian hotel has done a great job with securing the building, as well as maintenance of the hotel room. The hotel room had your standard amenities - coffee maker, refrigerator, hair dryer, large screen T.V., iron and ironing board. The hotel also provided soaps/lotions/shampoo/body wash. In the morning, there was a complimentary continental breakfast provided by the hotel. The simple continental breakfast consisted of - fresh fruit, oatmeal, pastries, juices, & hot coffee and tea. The room rate was very reasonable at ($169.15) per night, and after adding all the various taxes, the room was just under ($200.00 bucks). The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel also had a Kama'aina Special - No Resort Fee. All you have to do when checking in is provide a valid Hawaii ID/Driver's License for proof that you're a Kama'aina. Parking is free, but it's first come, first serve basis. I had a great night's sleep at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, no road noise, or honeymoon noises (see my review from the hotel I stayed at in Kona, Lol!). The bed was very comfortable, and there were many electrical outlets available so you could charge your electrical devices. I would say the highlight of my hotel stay was the spectacular ocean view from my hotel room! If you take a quick look at my pics, I'm sure one can appreciate this hotel

    Horrible hotel

Terrible hotel. The rooms are old and smelly. Breakfast is horrible, you must take it in a box. The bath tub was dirty. The view from my room was a construction site. It is more of a motel than a resort. No water in room. Overall this place lacks the quality of a resort. You don't feel like you are in Hawaii.

    Warning to others

Hilo Hawaiian hotel Posting this so others don’t make the same mistake in staying in this area. We stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel and left after 2 out of our 7 nights. The room had seen better days. Stains on the carpet and kind of dirty room/cockroaches etc. We booked through Costco and had no idea of the condition of Banyan drive or the Emergency plan of action that council members are trying to enact to tear down Uncle Billy’s next door, which has been abandoned since 2017-18 and has become taken over by squatters. Theres news stories about it! There’s a set of condos next to Billys between the Hilo Hawaiian and Grand Naniloa hotel that looks very sketchy, between these two properties there’s been 1,400 police calls since 2018. Also the Hilo hotel claimed we never came down to check out the day we did when we saw the manager when checking out! The front desk lady (Mary I’ve been told) didn’t care why were leaving early and was very short with us almost mad that we were leaving. (Pretty sure it’s her that claimed we never checked out) we are still waiting for a refund on 2 if the nights. Just be honest.

    Okay for a short stay

The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is an average hotel with pros and cons, like most places in this price range. Pluses: Plenty of free parking. Reasonably priced. Very close to the airport. Walking distance to several restaurants (plus there's an onsite restaurant though we dined elsewhere), secure bag drop if you arrive too early to check in. Fast elevators. Cordial staff. Easy drive to Volcano National Park. Other nearby attractions. The mehs: It's not new and shiny (but reasonably priced). The continental breakfast is a strong miss. The rooms need basic maintenance (electrical outlets that work, hair dryer mount loose, bubbly wallpaper). The surrounding area has seen better days and parts are downright dilapidated. If you're looking for 5-star accommodations, this isn't them. However, if you're looking for a reasonably priced, reasonably clean and reasonably comfortable hotel, check out the Hilo Hawaiian.
