Wonderful staff
I had an amazing time at this resort. It was a short stay but the staff is wonderful. The grounds are well maintained but the bedrooms need some improvement. Shout out to Lorenzo, Jessica and the activities team.

Great resort that gets all the important details right
My wife and I spent 10 wonderful nights here over the 2022 Christmas/New Year’s holiday and it seems Viva Wyndham has the right balance of comfort, excellent cleanliness, good food, entertainment without making us feel overwhelmed. The fantastic sand beach (no pebbles, seaweed or shells most of the time) is also a world-famous mecca for wind surfers and kite surfers. On one breezy day we counted almost 100 such surfers spread over a 4 km stretch of beach. For this reason, we would walk the very safe 20-minute walk down to the public beach area nearer town for less choppy waves and no kite surfers (who sometimes even buzz the beach waterline. The water temperature was about 80 deg F but you really want to book some half-day trips to the Puerto Plata area for snorkeling/diving trips and see that oldest colonial city in the Americas. Recommended: The speedboat (not the slow party boat) trip to Cayo Arenas (a.k.a. "Paradise Island") which is just a small sandbar atop a spectacular coral reef for snorkeling. On the way back, the speedboat zooms really fast through narrow channels in the mangrove forest - not to be missed! Next time: The cable car ride to the mountain above Puerto Plata looks enticing but plan to get there very early (9:00 AM) as the cruise passenger groups create a 2+ hour wait, so we skipped it this time. Hint: You can also hire a local driver for a relaxed tour of Puerto Plata - no need for a rushed group tour and it will be the same price for 2-3 people. Do NOT skip the free chocolate factory tour! In addition to various board games, Bingo, exercise classes, dance lessons and goofy games, the resort vibe was very relaxed. The nightly entertainment is great, including a tribute to Michael Jackson, which is definitely a must-see. The food here is actually quite good, and Viva Mexico was our favorite, in particular the "starter dishes", like ceviche, soups, etc. This is a very good place to try Mexican dishes you might be hesitant to try back home. The Asian fusion and Italian restaurants were also nice and a good chance to experiment. In general, we tend to avoid the "International buffet" at resorts (a.k.a. the big buffet), but in this case it was exceptional. For breakfast prepare to be amazed and the lunch and expcially dinner selections are vast and all very well done. We observed the head chef constantly patrolling the restaurants but he really kept an eye on the international buffet - and it shows in the quality. In particular, look for the perfect pasta and potato dishes and ethnic fish and chicken recipes. Thanks for special attention for the New Year's Eve party from Robinson and manager Kerin and the whole crew throughout our very memorable visit – it was all a blast and we would love to return.
