Off the hook week getaway in Vallarta
Sunset plaza resort was excellent... Researched many resort options, but settled blindly on this place due to location. We travel often, so have had many good and bad experiences. This place was amazing. 10 minute Uber from the airport.. Excellent venue.. Clean rooms, lobby's, bathrooms, pool decks and restaurants. The people make the biggest difference. These folks livelihoods depend on client experiences. We were so impressed with the employee's friendliness. Knowing rudimentary Spanish will help if you are so equipped. Special shoutout to Rudolfo ( one of the head concierge's).. Rudolfos friendliness, effort to please and passion were amazing. He literally bent over backwards for us. He literally makes this place special. Ask his story and Tip him well... FYI- we did the all inclusive, but still tipped liberally, made the special experience exceptional. Would take 100 of him to work for me back in the states. Other folks to recognize were Victor and FUERTE. Both back of house servers who were hilarious and excellent servers. All the pool deck servers were awesome ( especially if you tipped).. Older bartender in hotel lobby was excellent. That bar opened nightly at 5. They will adjust TV to whatever sports you can get if you ask. The older server who runs the crew in the Italian restaurant was a pro as well.. Room maids did awesome as well. All were tipped which you got back in spades with good service. Wife and I will come back definitely. Uber everywhere, you won't get screwed on $ and language barrier using Uber. Only recommendation would be to pick up entire area including beach from litter daily. Upper pool deck included. Also, there involves a lot of paperwork every time you eat and drink.. The servers have you sign a lot of paper to give to unfriendly cashiers who man the registers and do the accounting with the paper receipts. Smile cashiers !! Go electronic eventually. We will be back!! John from KC
It was wonderful! Top three things we loved about this resort: 1. Service - The staff is absolutely the best! Everyone was so friendly and genuinely wanted to make our vacation super! 2. View - Not sure you can get a better view! Most nights we slept with the glass slider open, loved the ocean air and the sound of the waves 3. Food - I'm not a foodie but I am picky and I found the food absolutely delicious! We were there for 10 days so had a chance to try all the restaurants. La Mirador - the main restaurant always served yummy food and never disappointed. The shrimp tacos are a must try!!! Their menu changes nightly. Luciano - We went there twice, menu also changes nightly. The food was fantastic! However, one time we found the service a little slow. I think there were a few large groups eating at the time and we just got lost in the shuffle. Piccalo Allegra - We only went for pizza once but it was very good. However, we were a little disappointed there wasn't salad or wine offered at that restaurant. But you can get salad at the cafe. La Freska 24/7 cafe - There is only a coffee machine, it does make cappuccinos and lattes but I guess we were expecting something else. The pastries were yummy. People will go down early and put a towel on a lounger to save it. I know this isn't unique to this resort, but it is frustrating, that's why we find smaller boutique hotels more our speed. We usually weren't ready to go to the pool/beach until 1 or 2 pm and found finding a lounger in the shade challenging. We learned the whole "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" a little too late. The rooms are getting a little older but they are roomy, comfortable and very well maintained. And again, that view!
Disappointed in Hotel
I was disappointed with the condition of the Sunset Plaza Hotel. It seemed pretty worn. Also they are adding on another half of the hotel so construction noises all day which made the pool experience less enjoyable. The staff we great. The food was good, although we really only had two options for sit down and order restaurants and two of the four nights we were there they had buffets which was the only choice.
Great staff, solid food - construction and new tower diminish experience
The staff at Sunset Plaza is superb. This was our 3rd time visiting. We love the location, the pools, and how it's not a party resort. Everyone is super nice and the service is amazing. That being said, we likely won't be back. The construction noise was present the whole trip and while it wasn't super loud, it made the trip less relaxing. Additionally, the new tower blocks the sun by the pools and lounge area in the AM, so you don't get sun at all until after 12 pm. This will be a problem for us, as you only get half a day of sun. There is also little to no beach now and the beach was closed for 2 days when we were there. Pretty soon there might not be a beach at all if the tide keeps moving closer to the resort. The rooms could also use a remodel, but that didn't bother us too much. If you don't mind the noise, if you don't want loud partying and you prefer shade, it's a great place with a great staff and the food is solid.
Disappointed Loyalty Members
I hope this will be a constructive and objective review. My partner and I are considered loyalty members due to our membership. This was our 7th visit to Sunset Plaza. As much as I hate to say it, our visit continue to be disappointing. Each time we visit, we are asked to attend a presentation to "upgrade" our membership. We refused to attend this time since our membership is not lived up to what it is supposed to be. Our loyalty membership is partly based on the new wing that was being built and has not been completed to date and probably will not be completed any time soon. In addition, we were offered benefits with our membership that proved to be useless. For example, we were offered travel certificates for air travel and companion travel. We were offered four certificates none of which worked. We sent an email and told the membership representative about the certificates did not work and sadly we never received any response. We ask ourselves "what does loyalty members really mean for us?" since we continue to invest money and get little benefits from the membership. Each time we attended a presentation, it was a hard sale but we usually ended up signing up for membership because we love Sunset Plaza and it is truly what we consider to be our home away from home. They truly need to review memberships and do more to value members like us. As for our most recent stay, the staff is truly excellent. Marina the concierge is a jewel. She is always very helpful and probably the most outstanding staff member at Sunset Plaza. Thank you Marina for all you do for customers like us. Our butlers were Reymundo and Manuel. Truly top notch even though Manuel is new to Sunset Plaza. Thank you both for being so attentive and hospitable! The waiters at Mirador were great to mention Fernando, Salvador, Lucy and Victor. Another outstanding staff member is Samuel who usually waited on us at poolside. Samuel was always very attentive and gracious and did everything to make sure that we were satisfied and well taken care of. Samuel is the best! We found that the food options were somewhat limited especially for dinner. Each night the dinner menu changed and was very limited to like four entrees to choose from. I like dessert after my meal and the desserts were somewhat strange. One dessert one evening was "olive oil biscuit". Strange and not very appealing as a dessert option. One option to get pastries and coffee was very disappointing. In the past, the cafe offered self service coffee and other options like cappuccino. They told us that the machine was broke and only offered regular coffee and hot water which was most of the time not hot. When I asked about getting a cappuccino they said that I could only get from the restaurant. They should be able to accommodate since we got self service cappuccino previously and since the machine was out of order. As luck would have it, the machine arrived the day we were checking out which was about a week after we arrived. I value good customer service and can identify it easily since that is what I do every day. We love Sunset Plaza and the staff there. Apart from the great staff and those mentioned by name already, we certainly felt that there was a number of things lacking and it is not the same as before. Another example is we ordered breakfast as room service. It took an hour for breakfast to arrive and the breakfast was cold. In the past, they would set the table for our breakfast and it was usually quick to arrive and to enjoy a delicious hot breakfast. Not the case this time since we usually liked to have breakfast in our room on the balcony overlooking the ocean in the morning. After the first experience with room service this stay, we decided to have breakfast at the restaurant in order to enjoy a hot breakfast. We certainly realize that the pandemic had an affect on things. However, with things being back to normal for the most part but still cautious, we feel that Sunset Plaza needs to get back to the excellent resort that we have known it to be.
