The Vibe Team was the highlight of our trip!
This was our second time at the Royalton Riviera Cancun. The first time was five years ago. The second time was about a week ago in February 2024. I will definitely say that. Our first experience was a lot better. I will start off by saying when we checked in it just started off not so great we were a family of five and booked the junior suite. The option for the junior suite could be one king bed, or two queen beds, and a pullout couch. We were a family of five, and they tried telling us that they only had one king bed available. Our travel agent assured us that we would get a room with two queens because we were a family of five and Delta vacations told them that we had to get a room with two queens. The hotel told me that this information was misleading from our travel agent which was untrue. I have used their agent several times and have not had any issues. What was the most upsetting is that they had no empathy and didn’t even care about the room that they were putting us in. After waiting for a little bit they ended up finding us a room with two queen beds that faced the roof. We paid for a partial ocean view room and did not get it at first. After a few days, they were able to move us and the view was a lot better but it was a complete hassle and started our trip out on a bumpy road. I will say that the rooms are really worn down. It’s definitely an older hotel. Another thing that we really struggled with was getting reservations to the restaurants because we did not have diamond club. One day I waited 30 minutes inside of Zen when they opened to make a reservation for hibachi there were only five people in front of me and when I got to the front they told us that they only had a 5 o’clock and a 9 o’clock available because of all the people that had already made reservations from diamond club. The best part of the trip was the entertainment and the pools. The vibe team was unbelievable, so kind and accelerating to everyone especially the kids. They were never bored! Nestor and Frankie were so great with the kids! Our kids were sad to leave because of them! Also the entrainment at night was so great. The noise level at night is definitely not for a family and kids that are sleeping. People are screaming in the hallways and coming home really late, the music is really loud, and maintenance seems to happen at night. Also, if you go and address your concerns, nothing happens at all. They do not care or at least that’s how we felt. You pay all of this money for a trip and no assurance that you will get what you paid for and if you don’t get it then tough luck. Also, when I said that we paid for a partial oceanview, they just kept saying well. This is what we have available. This is what we have available. Well, then, why did I pay for something that you don’t have available? The food truck and nibbles were amazing for the kids to just walk up and order food at the pool. Zen and taj were good, but portions are very small. Caribbean grill was ok. Ivan at Zen was great at a hibachi table. We never got into the steak house. We had the Italian place for lunch as you see in the pictures and it was really good. The buffet was actually really good too but you get a horrible smell when you first walk in. We were also in building seven and there was a horrible smell the entire time. If we come back to this place it will only be because of the entertainment and pools.
5-star price for 4-star resort: Cancun Royalton
My family just returned from a one-week stay. We booked based on the TripAdvisor reviews. It was OK...we have stayed at much better resorts. The staff were very nice but the resort was full and it was clear that the service staff were VERY over-worked. The good: The beach is nice and well-maintained, as are the pools. There are lots of umbrellas available for those who want shade. They never ran out of clean towels at the beach, but regularly ran out at the pools. The food was good, not great, and there are quite a few a la-carte restaurants to choose from (Tex mex was our favourite). The wait staff were exceptional, but as mentioned above, too busy to clear our dishes in a timely manner. We tipped at every meal. The gym was well-equipped and the boot camp instructor knew what he was doing (Eric). Also, there were barely any mosquitoes/bugs at night. The BAD: The walls are paper-thin. We were regularly woken up early early in the morning (by kids) and late at night (by adults). Many of the guests we spoke to complained about this. To be honest, the construction quality seemed shoddy -- the banister fell out of the wall in one of the stairwells and our neighbours were told not to flush anything (not even toilet paper) after maintenance came to their room twice. While the boot camp instructor at the gym was great, the yoga / pilates instructor was terrible. The spa was VERY expensive. The braids cost $85 USD for a full-head and they were not great. When we were in Jamaica it cost $40 and the braids were amazing. The water park is probably best for kids aged 5 and younger - our 6 year old daughter was bored after the first day. The Kids club staff seemed nice, but our daughter only did one activity with them because it wasn't very well organized. Also, it's only open for ~3 hours during the day. Babies and toddlers were allowed in the pools in regular diapers -- not swim diapers. I alerted the lifeguard that I saw feces in the pool (we got out quickly and immediately showered) but I was shocked that they did not clear the pool. Overall, it was an OK vacation. For what we paid, we expected a lot more.
Resort needs an overhaul, but there are staff members that are absolute diamonds
Royalton Riviera Resort is billed as a 4 Diamond resort, however our experience was anything but. Starting from check in - I had reserved a room with 2 beds for my friend and I, but when I go to the room, it was a king "family suite" with a filthy, stained, beat-up lumpy hide-a-bed couch. And it was directly above the kiddie pool, which was anything but a treat for us to enjoy a relaxing girls bday trip. We ordered room service, and got chewy, black "chicken" strips, raw poppers and a "grilled cheese" which was two pieces of plastic cheese between 3 slices of cold white bread. Needless to say, it all went in the trash. I will say, our trip was saved by one person - Brandon Madrid from the Diamond Guest Services department. He had heard about the situation and took it upon himself to come by and see if he could assist, where others had not. Brandon IS the diamond of this resort. From the moment we met him, he went above and beyond to ensure we found workarounds for the sleeping situation that fit our standards, provided recommendations (and reservations) for dinner each night, and checked in on us daily to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying our stay. Were it not for Brandon, I am sure the entire trip would have been a disappointment, but because of him, I'm giving the resort three stars. There were a few other high points - if you have access to the Hideaway (adults only side), Luis at the Aquarius bar is a gem. Also, Veronica at Agave as well as Baldo at Ocean Point provided top-notch dining experiences.
Amazing resort for the price you pay! Awesome staff, GREAT FOOD! Fun and entertaining place to be, for vacation.
The staff, food, and entertainment is awesome at this resort. It's clean and everyone is friendly. The staff don't do their jobs because they want to be tipped, you can tell they care about customer satisfaction. Another amazing trip to this Resort. We love it a lot and that is why we come back, again and sgain, at least once a year. We see the differences when we visit other resorts, especially the staff and the FOOD! The staff, the food, cleanliness and the resort itself is worth 5/5 rating. A big shout out to Mike Roman for managing an amazing staff of people at this resort, and ensuring that the customers are well taken care of. It was cool to see him and his employees having a pow-wow early in the morning to give their best and make the customers happy. You do not see that in most resorts, where the boss and his team meet every morning all because of their customers. That says a lots about this resort. Entertainment was great as always. The staff always engaging and making it fun. Shout out to Oscar Luna for managing things in this area. It was a blast. Good music, games, fun and entertainment. The food as always is top notch with so many varieties that it's the only resort till now, where I do not get buffet fatigue ( you know that feeling you get at certain resorts where the food is the same everyday and the smell is the same everyday day?) Yep, you never feel it in this resort. Still remember a test I did, and it took 6 days of going to the buffet ( breakfast, lunch and dinner) and getting some different to eat each time!! It's crazy good here...the steak place was just awesome with the onion soup as a starter and the beef tenderloin 😋. A few shout outs at the HUNTER to - Manuel, Elmer, Pedro - very helpful and accommodating. Made us feel very welcome and Priscila. The SPA experience was great shout out to Stephanie, Esther - Massage, Neri - Valet Stephania - Hydro.. Our concierge Raul makes us feel at home every time we are here...he caring and welcoming attitude makes you feel relaxed. He will text us randomly to ensure we were doing okay and had no needs. All in all, it was another great trip....
Nice place - poor service
Almost everything about this resort is above average. Room, food, and resort are great. The problem is the service. It’s horrible - and bordering on rude most of the time. Sometimes it’s language barrier - but mostly it’s just rude. I had issues checking in and a fellow named Leo ‘helped’ me. I was actually afraid of writing this review before leaving the resort for fear that Leo would retaliate. I waited forever for him to serve me. When he finally did, I started out by telling him I wanted to check in and go to my room (had to tell him this repeatedly). He replied repeatedly by asking what I wanted (it’s like he was playing dumb or something) - and he was mumbling something about air conditioning. Eventually the worker next to him told him to just check me in. Leo then tried to program my wrist band so it would open my room door. He told me to place my wrist on a machine. When I didn’t put my wrist in the exact right space, Leo said nothing. Instead, he forcefully grabbed my wrist and pushed it onto the machine. When I objected to the physical intrusion, he told me “You’re in Mexico now.” Am I to understand that, in Mexico, physical assault is the norm? Our regular maid was terrific. But, on his days off, the back-up maid was just weird. One day she took our dirty towels - but didn’t give us new ones. I spent too much time that day at guest services just trying to get a couple towels. The next day, same thing. So I resorted to stocking our room with brown pool towels each day. What a weird thing to make guests do. On another day, she made our bed - but didn’t put the pillows back onto it. It’s like she does half a job. And, wow… the pestering to get folks to use the spa… I must’ve been bugged a hundred times to go to the spa. Clearly there’s a huge upsell for spa services - a real turn-off. Finally… well… the people staying next to us ended up with bed bug bites (he showed them to us). A couple hours later, the room was sprayed for bed bugs. I didn’t experience this, myself - but, you know… again, a turn-off. One bright spot is the coffee/ice cream shop. The staff there are fantastic. It’s a nice place - but I’ll never return because of the horrible staff. Royalton needs to do a better job of vetting its employees before I’ll ever return.
