    Room for improvement

So the hotel is beautiful and pools are very nice. Where it goes down for me is the alcohol selection is very poor. The food is only fair. I had to upgrade to diamond club to get a decent bourbon! I booked a room with a small jacuzzi on my patio room and I am sure they thought it was an upgrade to a top floor room with 4-6 person jacuzzi on the roof. As a solo traveler this was not my preference and asked to move rooms. Especially since I had to have maintaince come the first night to make the drain close, then took over an hour to fill 2/3 of the way. I go for the pool, the drinks and the food. 5 stars on the pool, and 3 starts on the drinks and food

Dramatic decline from March 2023 to May 2024

Visited last year (March 2023) for a girls trip and decided to return again this year with the same group based on our previous experience. Unfortunately we regretted and wished we had tried somewhere new. The resort is still beautiful and clean for the most part, rooms are showing signs of wear and tear but the most noticeable difference was with the AI (food & drinks). Both visits we upgraded to Diamond Club which is supposed to give you access to top shelf alcohol selections which was great last year. This year, most bars were out of top shelf options (bottles on display were empty) so they would just use well replacements. Bartenders were clearly uncomfortable when asked for top shelf options, we could tell it was not their fault but they have been placed in a bad position to have to be dishonest to guests. Alcohol was watered down, you could not taste it in any of the cocktails. It's extremely sad that they are filling bottles with cheaper alcohol, it should be illegal to do this and lie to guests that actually paid more for Diamond Club. Guests that pay extra for upgraded selections can tell the difference, we have more mature pallets and are familiar with these selections back home. Most of the staff were very kind but others you could tell were overworked and frustrated, it was sad to see how dramatic this difference was from just 14 months ago when this resort was full of energy. On a positive note, our best meal was at the Zen (teppanyaki table). Show was great and food was extremely tasty (other restaurants food was just ok and lacked flavor). The steak house is currently under construction so it's temporarily being served out of one side of the buffet a sub par experience compared to last year. The resort was only at 65% capacity, I wonder if this is because guests have realized the decline? See photos of the lobby bar (our favorite bar last year), which is looking VERY sad this year compared to last :( Unfortunately, we won't be returning again based on our recent experience nor recommending to others.

    Tennis at Royalton

Rated 5 as really enjoyed the tennis with Louis who is a great coach. Superb friendly staff and great facilities. All inclusive is good if you want to be lazy around the hotel. A big resort so can always get away somewhere and lovely beach…white sand and blue sea. Don’t use the shop tho - Pier 27….Uber expensive even for basics….and staff unusually in contrast to the rest of the staff…less friendly. Had a great time and the sunshine helps!

Awful experience. THEY HAVE BED BUGS!!

My finance and I took a trip to Cancun as we’re looking around for possible wedding venues. We ended up staying at royalton Rivera a couple weeks ago for 3 nights and it was beyond disappointing. Oh yea and also we fell victim to BED BUGS 😷 I’ve been trying to contact the royalton MULTIPLE times a day, no one ever answers the phone it just rings on end. I’ve requested my wedding planner who is contracted with royalton to reach out for a supervisors or manager contact info. Not only are they ignoring me they are ignoring my planner. They never get back to you! For being a Marriott let alone a “luxurious” hotel this is super embarrassing and disappointing. Mind you I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for years, there is a certain standard of service and expectations these hotels uphold. That was not the case here. The property in itself is nice however as far as service, food, and so called “luxury” a big let down. The room we had was ok, however there were chipped paint and furniture, lime scum in the tub and shower/shower head. When we checked in they said we are eligible for a room upgrade, later that same night we requested for a room upgrade over to the adults only side and we were told no. Why even tell us in the first place? Food tasted like everything was all pre cooked and reheated again upon ordering. Room service? AWFUL. The only thing we could stomach was the cheeseburger and even that was sub par. The options to choose from are limited. Drinks are severely watered down. What am I paying all this money in an all inclusive for?? Our first night we ate at their steakhouse restaurant, I ordered the flank steak which was ok, my fiance ordered their NY strip which came out looking grey and meh. It was gross and my fiance ended up eating the flank. Second night we went to their Japanese restaurant, I ordered the sushi roll special which was a variety of different rolls and I kid you not these rolls were not fresh as if they were made prior in the day just sitting out. It was soggy and bland I couldn’t stomach it. Each restaurant gives you an option to enhance any meal with their “top tier” steak and/or lobster My fiance ended up “enhancing” his dinner and ordered a NY ribeye steak which they charged $70 for?! His dinner came out and we realized it was the same EXACT steak from the night before with the same greyish looking meat. It felt like the hotel had no idea that they had potential clients coming to stay at the resort although our wedding agency notified them as well as we did. The only positive outcome of this trip was meeting Luis, Guadeloupe, and Noe. Luis is royalton onsite sommelier, once he knew we were there scouting wedding venues, he was able to accommodate us on our last day next door at their adults only side and secure us a pool cabana and dinner reservation at their seafood restaurant. He treated us with a bottle of nice champagne at the pool and a wonderful bottle of wine at dinner. Guadelupe and Noe was our direct cabana servers, they both made our experience out by the pool really fun and personal. Next morning is check out day. I woke up to my whole lower and partial upper body COVERED in bites. My fiance hands and arms were affected. We go to check out and the lady who checked us out (forgot her name) was rude. Once I got up to the counter she doesn’t acknowledge me at all. Staring down at her computer for what almost felt like 5-10mins in silence. I said hello, nothing. Doesn’t even try to say I’ll be right with you in just a moment nothing. My bites were so bad that I had to go to urgent care to treat myself. Doctor confirmed bites were consistent with bed bugs. Since then I’ve been told that someone from Marriott would reach out to me…crickets. I would never in a million years would’ve thought this would be the outcome coming from a Marriott to say the least. There is absolutely no way I would considered having our wedding here let alone have our guest experience what we went through. Do not stay at this resort. You have been warned.

I will make this to the point! Stayed at the Royalton with the wife for 8 days.. (still here for another 2 days).. Pros.. Resort is beautiful and maintained for the most part! service is good in most areas food is very good! Rooms are decent (our A/C was cold) Cons.. Value is not here! A lot of things are extra! We upgraded to diamond club and to be honest, no difference whatsoever! Most importantly, for us anyway… no one seems to write this in there reviews but a lot of the reason we come to any all inclusive is the BEACH! The beautiful turquoise waters! We have pools at home.. Anyways, the beach here is just awful in every way and very disappointing and really dampened our experience the whole week! Besides the fact the water is completely brown and seaweed everywhere, the loungers are disgusting and never cleaned, no one was ever on the beach! We literally had to rent a car (not cheap) for a few days to go to playa del carmen and Cancún and isla mujeres to get a decent beach (which were all great) I can’t stress enough, if you are beach people, DO NOT CHOOSE THIS RESORT!
