One of the worst places I‘ve ever been.

Honestly, one of the worst places I‘ve ever been to. We‘re currently residing at this Riu Hotel in New York. Normaly, we only book hotels with 5 stars, but my wife told me that the Riu hotel got so many positive critics and we should give it a try. Huge mistake! The rooms feel like prison cells, they‘re way too small and don‘t have a wardrobe where you can store your luggage and belongings. They have attached shelves to the wall, but these are too small for 2 people. The rooms are badly soundproof, you basically hear everything what‘s happening on the floor. Everytime someone walks down the floor in the middle of the night, you‘ll wake up! What is really annoying is the fact that the staff is serving breakfast until 10am!!! So if you‘re late, you don‘t get any breakfast! We‘ve been travelling for 3 weeks through different states and never encountered a hotel that offers breakfast till 10am. And if you go down for breakfast you‘ve to be very(!) patient. There will be a lot of people standing in line to have a table! Last but not least the bar closes at midnight and you have to leave the place. They won‘t serve you any drinks and won‘t let you sit in the cafe downstairs. Imagine a Riu Hotel in Gran Canaria or Mallorca that closes the bar at midnight, that would lead to a bloody riot among the guests. I don‘t know how this hotel got its excellent ratings, but believe it or not we‘re more than happy to leave this hotel on friday! Never ever again!

    Accommodation nice, staff unfriendly

Stayed for 4 nights in august on our first trip to New York. Location was great, for our taste we would have preferred somewhere further away from Times Square however I can’t fault the prime location. Breakfast wasn’t included in our stay due to an issue with the app when we booked (it came up as $5000 extra to book breakfast!) we booked on arrival but we’re very disappointed. The queuing system is ok, quite well organised but the staff are unbelievably unfriendly! I like to enjoy my second cup of coffee but was asked to leave to vacate the table because they had people waiting. The staff were constantly trying to take plates away to get you moving on. In general the rooms were nice, small but functional and clean. My biggest disappointment is the unfriendliness of the staff! This is something so easily rectified that I find it astounding. At checkin then guy couldn’t have cracked a smile if it killed him! In general the security and staff walking around just constantly had grumpy faces! I’m now aware you can’t take alcohol outside however no one told me and when I dared to drink a beer in the outside seating I can only say I was rudely told to go inside to the freezing aircon - no thanks! When I suggested putting a sign up outside to make people aware I was told the staff should have told me.,just rude! When I sat there witnessed nothing but people smoking weed walking past, making scenes cause they are stoned, I find the philosophy slightly remarkable. I’m summary, I have stayed at many Riu hotels but it didn’t not live up to anywhere near to expectations

    Beautiful hotel but mixed review

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 12 nights. The hotel itself is beautiful. It’s very clean, rooms are spacious for New York and the service is professional. The hotel is located just out of Times Square, a perfect location for your stay in NY. The rooms are very comfortable and surprisingly quiet at night. Just a few things to be aware of if booking this hotel. Breakfast has an amazing variety however you have to go down to the lobby, line up, get your name marked off, get crammed into a lift up to level 5, line up again to be seated. It’s ok but make sure you allow enough time for this process. The staff are very professional but not overly friendly. The only people that cracked a smile was the staff member who greeted you when you got to level 5 for breakfast. The other issue we had was that our flight was cancelled until the next day. We went down to the front desk to ask if we could stay for another night and the staff member told us to look at online accommodation platforms like Booking.com to find a vacancy. He said he couldn’t help us. We ended up at a different hotel two streets away who couldn’t do enough to help us. In summary, a beautiful hotel but the staff lack personality and if you need any extra assistance or help, this is not the place for you.

Unforgettable - do not hesitate to come here!

Wow. This was a truly sensational hotel. We try to go to NYC at least once per year as its our favourite place in the world; so we have stayed at a number of different hotels around this price bracket. I will break down the hotel in parts to make it a little easier to digest. Location - the Hotel is literally a stones throw from Times Square and travel options (which are readily available in NYC). I prefer the location of this hotel to the other RIU which we are staying at next - as it is very central, when you come out of the hotel you are bang in the centre! Rooms - the rooms did not disappoint. They are slightly bigger than we have had in other hotels and live up to the textbook 'RIU' standard if you are a frequent visitor to RIU hotels. The rooms are modern, and the bathrooms are very nice. The toilets feel low but I don't think that is much of an issue. Whilst there is a TV and that sort of thing, you are usually only in your room for sleeping so it didn't even get turned on. The view from our rooms were incredible and we were a good way up, so could look down on the streets below. Breakfast - if you are debating paying for the breakfast option, don't hesitate - the breakfast is one of the best selections I have ever experienced in NYC and we were a party of 6 adults, 2 children (inc. 1 baby) - and there was never an issue for us with highchairs or food options or anything like that. The breakfast can be likened to what I would expect in an all inclusive resort abroad, so you can fill yourself up beautifully and fuel yourself for a day in NYC! Lifts - there are at least 4 lifts, serving both sides of the building and I don't really remember having too much issue with them - all I would suggest is that you go to breakfast in good time, as with any hotel - the lifts can fill up quickly with guests going to and from breakfast. Occasionally we would have to wait a while as they were full. Gym - the gym is excellent, a good mix of free weights and resistance machines. The thing I liked best was that it was open most of the day/night, so you can fit your workouts in without compromising your holiday time! Lobby/Reception - the staff were always great; even after we had left, I emailed them asking for a photograph of the labels on the mattresses as they were so comfy I wanted them for home, and they sent it me within an hour I would say. They will also look after your luggage after check-out which is really useful, and there are also toilets in the basement if you needed after you had checked out. A great hotel - you just need to keep an eye out for good deals on it, as it can sometimes be a little expensive, so be sure to join RIU class if you haven't yet booked as this might help.

    Amazing experience

Great location, 2 mins walk to Times Square. Lovely clean, modern hotel. Very helpful and accommodating staff. NoI queue at checkin, free upgrade to 42nd floor with amazing views. Room a good size with assessable walk in shower. concierge were super helpful, organising transport to JFK with excellent knowledge of travel time according to time of day and flight times. An all round great place to stay. Will be returning in March 24.
