    Nice but not 5 star

Upon check in everyone around us had been given welcome drinks but we weren't offered anything. The associate verified our information and handed us (2ppl) 2 room keys and 1 towel card (we were able to talk the towel guy in to giving us a 2nd towel) and told us to look at the app for everything hotel related. She didn't even direct us as to where to find our room, I had to ask, where do we go. The room and property were very clean however, if you're used to towels in cute shapes on your bed everyday you won't find it here. Most days they fanned out my PJ's like a bow in the middle of the bed. There was no bedspread, only a sheet. I found a cheap blanket in the closet we were able to use. The food was probably the most disappointing part of the vacation. They rate this as a 5 star resort but I would give the food 2/3 stars at best and the selection was terrible. We did visit the Riu Bravo right next door for lunch, the food was much better, and they had way more to offer however, you are only welcome during the day and stuck with the sub-par dinners. The RIU parties were conveniently located to this property, others had to take a bus but it was only a 5min walk. We were looking for a quiet, low key, relaxing vacation and that's what this property was. The pools were chill (even the one with the swim up bar). The entertainment staff did their best to get people involved in activities and were very up beat. If you're looking for something a bit more lively/loud the swim up bar pool next door (which you can use) offered that. Across the board, there was a very strong language barrier, asking questions about anything was a struggle. Also, something I have never experienced before was there is no store on property. I don't know what you would do if you forgot something but literally, no where to buy anything, even sun screen.

    A Return Visit

This was our second visit to the Macao, the first being some 11 years before. It was nice to see what had been done during the refurbishment, and we are glad to say that it has been a marked improvement. The rooms are much better, gone are the purple and white tones to be replaced by beige and light greens. The choice of restaurants has increased with the Italian and the Steakhouse offerings being really good. But Riu ' What has gone wrong with the orange juice at breakfast?' it's like water and tastes of nothing. Our other gripe was, that the Cubana bar and the Sports bar are too cold, the AC makes it so you can't sit very long in either. We came here for the warm weather so don't wish to sit shivering in a bar. Joe's bar with no AC was perfect. All in all a good holiday.

    Fab hotel

This is probably the best hotel I have stayed at and my 3rd Riu palace. Fantastic from start to finish, all staff are exceptional and friendly, we haven’t had anything other than great service here. The grounds are fabulous, really nice fresh, classy decor and spotlessly clean. We arrived to being told they had run out of our room type- standard so we got a free upgrade. The room was lovely, clean and spacious, with a proper king bed, large bathroom with rain shower and a massive balcony. My only niggle would be that they were mowing the lawn outside our room at 7.30am. The hotel leads onto the beach and wow what a beach it is with palm trees, white fluffy sand and warm clear sea. Would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to be back soon.

Not The Best Stay at a RIU Resort

I have stayed a multiple RIU resorts and have never had this bad of an experience. The hotel staff were very rude and racist towards my family, especially my sister. When we had an issue with the amount that was to be paid for my stay at the resort, the manager Ceaser was very dismissive and rude. When we had proof of the amount that we had booked for, he stated "the price we see in the computer is the price you will pay." He then went in the back and stated he was working on solving our issue but when I showed him the proof we had, he did not believe me. We waited for 3 hours to try to get the issue resolved and it was only when I stated "I am going to call corporate", things started to move. My money was eventually refunded but only after I was disrespected by the front desk and management staff. Willman in food services was the nicest employee and deserves a raise. Walquiri in guest services at the front desk was very rude as well. She did try to apologize but the damage had already been done. When I asked if they did anything for birthdays at the resort, the front desk staff acted as if they did not hear me, and nothing was done to my room in any celebratory manor. I am appalled by how my family was treated during my stay and it has made me not want to stay at another RIU hotel.

Not our best experience in RIU Hotel

When we arrived at the hotel check in was quick.  When they showed me on the map where our room was I asked if we could be moved as it was right at the back and the furthest away from the pools & beach etc.  The receptionist said she could change /upgrade our room as we are gold class customers to the one they use for honeymooners so we took it.  When we eventually found our room (tucked in the corner near the sports bar) it was no different to any other room.  The location was right near the sports bar and overlooked both stages so it was not a quiet as originally requested but as we wear earplugs the noise didn't really bother us but it certainly would others, I'm sure.  Due to the problems the hotel has been experiencing with damp they control the air conditioning.  This is the first hotel we have ever stayed in where this happens.  On arrival at our room the temperature was set at 23 degrees which was too hot for us so I asked for it to be reduced to 20 degrees.  The technician attended but the temperature dropped to 17.5 degrees which was too cold.  After about 6 attempts of regulating it to 20 degrees we gave up & had to result in putting a blanket on the bed.  Due to me going from hot to cold I ended with a cold for most of our holiday. Other than the problems above the rest of the holiday was fine.  We ate in all the restaurants and although there wasn't much to our taste in the a la carte restaurants we enjoyed what we had but there was more than enough choice in the buffet restaurant every evening. The coffee shop was a nice touch & the cakes on offer were delicious.  We enjoyed the tuna baguettes also. All the staff were friendly from the grounds keepers to the bar staff and they are a credit to the hotel. The sea is a bit choppy and you have to pick the right moment to enter but it's good fun riding the waves once in. We have decided we will not return to Dominican Republic but this is no reflection on the hotel.
