Love It Here
My husband & I recently returned from our third stay at the Riu Palace Bavaro. We’ve stayed at countless Riu properties over the years, this is one of our favorites. We were excited to return since the property was recently renovated. Traveling as a couple, this review will not include the new family section. We were in the adult only villas, but we were not in an elite room. Our villa’s location was perfect for us. Close to the beach, adult pools, and afternoon restaurants. The housekeepers and other room staff did a great job. We left some $$$ and candy on the bed, and near the refrigerator, daily for the room attendants. There was turndown service during dinner hours, so we also left a couple of dollars on the bed when we left the room for dinner. There were only two hooks in the bathroom. We used them to hang our shower towels. I used suction hooks on the glass separator for additional space to hang items to dry. I attached a photo along with pics of the toiletries that are on the wall near the bathroom sink and shower. Our room was comfortable and we slept well. The were plenty of loungers around the adult only pools as well as on the beach. It was nice to not have to worry about getting up early to save a spot for the day. The beach is beautiful, you can walk for miles. We always felt safe and never worried about leaving anything on our loungers or our in our room. We have been going to all-inclusive resorts for over 30 years. IMHO, without a doubt, the main difference is the staff and how we are treated. The level of service at the Riu Palace Bavaro is above and beyond what anyone would expect. The staff is phenomenal! We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces. Manuel welcomed us back as soon as we arrived at the buffet on our first day. Yefri, a familiar face, served us dinner at Zen (my favorite al carte restaurant) and then welcomed us to breakfast at the buffet each morning after that. Along with Manuel and Yefri; Eduardo, Laticia and others served us well at the buffet. Laticia noticed we added fruit to our morning mimosas. One morning she came to our table with a plate of diced pineapple and watermelon then proceeded to add it to our glasses. I was so touched by her kindness. It’s the little things that make us feel special. One of the new things the Bavaro offers is a food court. It was a great place to get a quick refuel during the day. Juan and Mabel took very good care of us whenever we arrived. Mabel always saw us coming. She would have a table ready and waiting for us every time. I remember Mabel working at the buffet many years ago. She was one of the hardest working, never stopping; always smiling servers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting at an all-inclusive. I was in awe of her spirit, energy, as well as the high level of service she provided to her guests. Needless to say, I was thrilled when we walked into the food court and saw her smiling face looking right at me. I recognized her immediately. I wish her and her family the best. We loved our bartenders and pool servers. Aleixi, Frank, Fabian and the rest were fabulous. Always happy and having fun. I also want to give a shout out to Emily. She is new to the resort and does the afternoon Riu fit program. I could not help but notice her energy and how well she interacted with the guests. Happy staff makes for happy guests. We felt welcomed & comfortable everywhere we went. Reception, housekeeping, bar staff & the restaurant staff were all amazing. I cannot wait to go back!!

Great resort with some things to improve
Beautiful resort. Stylish, elegant, newly decorated. Clean and well kept. Beach is outstanding, a lot of palm trees, clean. In this time of the year there are more waves than usual, but that is the trade-off, since the prices in late Sep - Oct are more affordable. I beleive that installing more showers near the beach would be a plus, since there are only few near the polls. Having more trash beans on the beach would be great. Food was generally good. The best food could be found in the buffet restaurant. The food there is fresh and diverse. Some meals could be a little tasteless, since in general resorts policy want to accommodate as many tastes as possible. Although all specialty restaurants at the resort look stunning, the food quality is mediocre. That is our experience.Pasta Alfredo that we ordered was not cooked well, and spaghetti with meatballs were not cooked well as well. I beleive that all the food comes from the central kitchen. It is fair to say that we had limited experience with specialty restaurants. Service was generally good, and staff was friendly. The only problem is that most of them do not speak any other language than Spanish, which makes even simple communication a challenge. Anyhow, we managed to communicate somehow. The only downside of the Riu Palace Bavaro experience was the an unpleasant episode that we had with a front desk (reception) people. We wanted to visit some relatives that live in Bavaro, and we were told to us evening before that one person could come by car to the lobby to pick us up. Next day people from the front desk did not allow that. They were rude, and disrespectful even questioning that we have relatives in Bavaro (implying that I am not telling the truth). That was frustrating. They suggested to take a taxi ( USD 5) to take us to the gate. We end up walking to the gate (approx. 600 m) carring our toddler. There was many ways to resolve this situation, but the people from the front desk end up acting this way. Not sure why. I beleive Riu as reputable chain of hotels, should train their staff better, since hospitality business is all about relationships with the guests. That is the reason for my 4 star rating. I want to finish on the positive note. When we came to the hotel, we asked for 2 queen beds room. Basic room with 2 queen beds was not available, so they upgraded us the room. That was extra nice and fair. We very much appreciate that. Generally, Riu Palace Bavaro is an outstanding experience for family vacation. It needs little fixes here and there, but it is great place to be!

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
This was the worst RIU I ever stayed at. Staff was not friendly and it would have been nice if a few workers were bilingual. We couldn’t even order our meals at the restaurants because they couldn’t understand us. BEWARE of the casino!!! Do not go at all!! They have a scam going on and will take you for a lot of money. The manager at RIU did not care and walked away from us during our conversation to report it. We were suppose to get married here but decided to cancel the wedding and go back home. RIU corporate did not care about our horrible experience and told us we should have picked a different resort.
